To Think This Might Break Brexit Deadlock

I am a staunch remainer and believe the Remain side came out tops on Thursday.

But as we appear to be steamrolling towards crashing out, no matter what, might this be a way forward, although it's not ideal by any means at all.

As most leavers-those who tell the truth-admit that free movement is what enraged them because before that, they just quietly grumbled-there was no real push to move-could this work?

The UK opts out of the Free Movement deals-brings in a points system for immigrants and, if that happens, stays in the UK.

I think most leavers would accept that and , although ending free movement sticks in the craw, it would at least mean that we stay in the EU>

I mean, stay in the EU!

Another Remainer who refuses to accept the results of any vote....

Helmetbymidnight · 28/05/2019 12:16

cmon- so you think the eu should abandon the very principles of its existence to what? accommodate the 10% of british people who are brexiteers but between them cant think up a workable plan?

donotcovertheradiator · 28/05/2019 12:20

It is annoying to accommodate just 10% but if it is that or leave the EU altogether, I might be prepared to swallow it.

If we leave, there won't be free movement anyway!
But if we say-ok, points system and that allows us to stay in, then that might be better than being totally out.

Of course, the EU might tell us to get stuffed-probably will and who could blame them-but it might be worth asking!

Yes remain parties 'won' on Thursday Friar. Look at the results please.

No I don't think this is fair OP for Helmets reason. Brexiters are investing in unicorns, led to do so by Farage, Johnson etc. We don't give in to this nonsense.

Helmetbymidnight · 28/05/2019 12:24

why should the eu fall apart because of us?
what makes you think they would agree to revise the fundamentals of their existence? we're not that special.

how would it work with the irish border?

Justanotherlurker · 28/05/2019 12:27

You clearly have no understanding of the EU, we cannot bring in a points based immigration system for EU citizens, just the same as we cannot have "a" customs union either.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 28/05/2019 12:29

I am a leaver and the one thing I would be happy to keep is freedom of movement but with a few restrictions which apply to others here on visas.
So that rules out that as a reason for me to want to stay in.

donotcovertheradiator · 28/05/2019 12:31

It is better to try something than crash out and leave the EU because that will hurtle the whole of the UK into a pit that we might never climb out of.

I don't think the EU would accept it-I wouldn't blame them-but surely now, we should grasp at any straw.

So actually it's a totally pointless idea.

elfonshelf · 28/05/2019 12:43

EU has freedom of movement as one of its 4 pillars. Not a hope in hell that they would accept UK remaining in EU but without FoM - that is after all what Cameron attempted to get with his renegotiation back in 2015/16.

The majority of Leavers I know aren't that bothered about FoM - they're interested in leaving the ECJ, Single Market and the Customs Union (at which point you get control of immigration too). Not a chance that 99% of them would sign up for something that only restricted that but left us under the over-rule of the ECJ.

donotcovertheradiator · 28/05/2019 12:46

It's not a totally pointless idea if there is even the slimmest of chances that it might work.

BrexitBingoGenerator · 28/05/2019 12:51

I still think my amazing idea from months ago trumps this- England secedes from the union and brexits. The rest of the UK carries on as normal as an EU nation with a peripatetic parliament using the infamous NHS bus to travel between the nations bimonthly, like a mobile library.

Justanotherlurker · 28/05/2019 12:53

It's not a totally pointless idea if there is even the slimmest of chances that it might work.

Its a pointless idea because FOM is one of the four pillars, not only that but as PP mentioned, Cameron went to ask along those lines before the referendum and was not given them.

jasjas1973 · 28/05/2019 12:53

Its an idea that's been around for a while now, various Euro MEPs have suggested the UK negotiates to stay in, not to leave.

The 4 freedoms aren't going to change, however, the UK could be given an extension or a period of grace from FOM until it starts investing in public services once again, the mechanism already exists.

Its something DC could have done in 2016: gone back to the EU, told them he wanted some concessions or we will trigger A50. Unfortunately the idiot went around pre result telling everyone that he would leave asap, once in life time etc etc.

Probably too late now.

donotcovertheradiator · 28/05/2019 12:54

Well, what can we offer the EU then in the hope that they might forgive us our wanton stupidity?

OP posts:
BoneyBackJefferson · 28/05/2019 12:54

What absolute BS.

StealthPolarBear · 28/05/2019 12:57

Negotiating to stay in? We have no negotiating power!

donotcovertheradiator · 28/05/2019 12:59

I'm sad to tell you that it isn't bullshit at all! If you think that wasn't the main reason for many people, then you are plain wrong.

Anyway, back to how we might undo this foolishness...could we agree to pay a fine to the EU in order to stay?

There must be something we can try. Ideally, a second referendum but that is looking less likely.

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 28/05/2019 12:59

Ooh we could offer to sacrifice Boris. Send him to languish in an Iranian jail. And we could bankrupt Rees mogg. If I were an EU leader that would make me happy and get the UK back in my good books.

StealthPolarBear · 28/05/2019 13:00

Op we can stay in the EU. We just don't leave! It's us not them

QueenOfIce · 28/05/2019 13:01

I think you'll find that not all leavers voted on the basis of immigration. 🙄

Cheeseandwin5 · 28/05/2019 13:02

The problem as I see it, that some Brexiters still believe the UK as a the most important player on the world stage. When we leave the EU and have to negotiate our own contracts we are going to get royally screwed, just see Trumps speech. Sadly those shouting the loudest wont suffer, Farage with his German passports for his family. The media Tycoons Murdock and DMGT , amongst others, with their wealth in offshore accounts, even Rees Mogg who moved his business to Ireland will become more powerful and rich. It will be the country and the working people in it who will once again suffer the brunt.

jasjas1973 · 28/05/2019 13:03

Negotiating to stay in? We have no negotiating power!

We do, still do.

We are a major economy (atm) a reasonably sized military power, a decent intel community, science and technology, contribute to EU funds.

What we aren't are good Europeans and have now burn't a lot of bridges.
