Stares about noticeable age difference

rubian · 25/05/2019 21:26

I'm getting quite conscious of people staring at the age difference with me and DP.
It isn't drastic, 7ish years but I look quite young and he looks a few years older.

How do you just ignore this? Has anyone else experienced this?

I doubt if anyone is looking tbh. I mean Bag of Spanners (Jagger) and whatever 20/30 something he's shagging that week you can kind of understand, but generally, no, I doubt anyone bats an eyelid.

OrdinarySnowflake · 25/05/2019 21:57

If you look under 18, then yes, people will take a second glance and judge if they think they are seeing a grown man close to 30 with a teen. Be reassured they are judging him, not you...

If it helps, there's only 3 years between me and DH but when we were first dating, people thought the gap was much wider as I looked younger than I was, one friend of a friend asked if our relationship was 'appropriate'... anyway, now I look old and haggered, no one thinks that anymore...

Aridane · 25/05/2019 21:58

If you look distinctly under age, then, yeah, they'll be a few stares

AndTheEnd · 25/05/2019 22:00

Well your posts are coming across as quite young. Him being old to you is probably a percentage of your age difference. He's not that old. You're 18. You'll grow up yet.

rubian · 25/05/2019 22:03

@AndTheEnd I don't think he's that old and I'm 20 in a few weeks as previously stated!

You're being paranoid, I think.

It helps to think that usually people just aren't paying any attention to you - they are mostly in their own bubbles.

Tweedledumanddumber · 25/05/2019 22:10

My dH is 16 years older than me. We both look young for our age. When i was expecting DD, a lady came up to us and addressed my DH saying she was doing a survey of parents with teenage kids. i was 28!

rubian · 25/05/2019 22:11

@Tweedledumanddumber that's a good one 😂

Minimincepies · 25/05/2019 22:20

You're probably just a bit paranoid. The only age gap I've noticed where most people definitely raised an eyebrow was when my 19yo friend was dating a 63yo university lecturer. 7 years is nothing!

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 25/05/2019 22:24

I think I look about 16/17

If you look under 18 then yes, perhaps you are getting a few stares - but if you're together long-term, it'll wear off as you're bound to look over 18 at some point.Grin

Just enjoy looking youthful while you can!

thegreylady · 25/05/2019 22:35

8 years between dh and me but at 75 and 83 who cares?

Accountant222 · 25/05/2019 22:37

My ex next door neighbour ran off with a 28 year old, he was 62, that's an age gap. Money does it every time.

DameDoom · 25/05/2019 22:39

Are you a Cheeky Girl? Is DP Lembit Opik? If not, no need to worry.

jarviscockatiel · 25/05/2019 22:44

DH is 25 years older than me but I've never noticed anyone staring.

DareIAdmit · 26/05/2019 09:22

If you look 16/17 and your partner looks nearer 30 then that's a bit different to some of the previous posters experience, it's not about a 7 year gap it's because he looks a bit sleazy dating a teenager. It will get better with time at least, age gaps are always more noticeable when people are younger.

Rocketgirl1 · 26/05/2019 09:25

People may well be looking if you are a teenager and look even younger than you are. Maybe they can’t work out if you are father and daughter or a couple.

Rocketgirl1 · 26/05/2019 09:26

I used to get odd looks when I was with someone 7 years older than me but he was also very unusual looking so it might have been that too. I wasn’t imagining it because I have never experienced that in other relationships.

hotmessmom82 · 26/05/2019 09:45

My partner is 11 years younger and sometimes we get it but to be fair he's rocking a top bod from lots of football, where as I could do with cutting back on the wine and crisp sandwiches 🤣

LordPickle · 26/05/2019 09:46

I doubt anyone cares. My friend is 13 years younger than her DH and I didn't know until she told me.

Shockers · 26/05/2019 09:47

When I’m out with my dad, he is often mistaken for being my partner, as he’s only 18 years older than me. I can honestly say though, that nobody has ever stared in a negative way.

goose1964 · 26/05/2019 09:48

My husband has been mistaken for my dad. There's 9 years between us, he looks about the right age but I pass for younger

AnduinsGirl · 26/05/2019 09:51

I'm 13 years older than my partner and it's definitely noticeable. He's handsome and lean and I am...not! (God knows what he sees in me!) People probably stare but we're doing the long distance thing so too busy being soppy and appreciating our time together to care.
