It had spiders eggs on it. LIttle things in a web, little brown things. Thank god it was only for the small furries.

This is why I always wash my lettuce Grin

DizzyPigeon · 25/05/2019 19:27

Hate to break it to you, but veg is grown outside and there are critters outside.

I've had a slug in a tesco cauliflower, and my neighbour had a dead spider in sainsburys bananas.

It happens.

icecreamsundae32 · 25/05/2019 19:29

Argghh hate hearing stuff like this! It would really freak me out to open a lettuce and see that!

floraloctopus · 25/05/2019 19:31

Caterpillars, beetles, whatever - fine. But spiders eggs hatch. In my house. When I am asleep. They will be dead won't they?

Well the alternative is for it to have been washed in chlorinated water before bagging by the producer. Just wash it under cold water before you eat it.

mrswhiplington · 25/05/2019 20:12

Try getting veg off an allotment. My DH bring things home with slugs on, holes in the leaves, we just wash thoroughly and remove the holey bits. Still here to tell the tale.Grin

Spider’s eggs, its all protein isn’t it Smile

clairemcnam · 25/05/2019 20:39

This reassures me that the lettuce has not been washed in chlorinated water which destroys a lot of the goodness in a lettuce. Just wash it like you should with all lettuce.

I bought locally grown broccoli not long ago which was covered in little flies and once washed so delicious - I worry about pesticides and their impact on us more than about insects in a way though I do have to get myself past the yuck factor

I bought some from Tesco and it had a little caterpillar inside which had been eating and shitting a little tunnel all the way through. It's put me right off Caesar salads.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 25/05/2019 20:52

I don’t want spiders to eat me in my sleep! Shall I burn it or just beat it to a pulp with a broom?

EdWinchester · 25/05/2019 20:53

Meh. Just wash it.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 25/05/2019 20:53

Just think of all those spider eggs that you haven’t seen.

Millions.

Tartyflette · 25/05/2019 21:17

DH had to stop growing cauliflower because they just got infested with cabbage white caterpillars.
He'd bring one in from the garden, i'd soak it in water, sometimes salted water, which got rid of loads of the little fuckers, but when I cooked it there were still shedloads of the buggers - albeit now dead - to be seen in the pan. Put me right off eating it.

MotherOfDragons90 · 25/05/2019 21:21

My mam used to say it was ‘an extra meaty bonus’ whenever one of us used to end up with a critter in our veg Smile
