Thanos.........

So with the prospect of a new prime minister from a potential field of lunatics, America on the verge of starting the apocalypse with Iran / North Korea / Canada, poverty rife and life generally seeming pretty bleak.....

Is it OK that I'm starting to think that maybe Thanos had a point?

My children don’t plan on breeding. Makes me happy.

badlydrawnperson · 24/05/2019 12:58

Dunno who Thanos is (I googled but it didn't help as I have no background in US comics).

YABU things aren't as bad as they look. I was you during the Thatcher/Reagan years but we survived in spite of that pair of warmongering swivel-eyed cunts.

It will be OK.

StellarLunar · 24/05/2019 13:00

I was hoping this would be "AIBU to want to call my baby Thanos"

OP I know things seem bleak but there are plenty of lovely things happening in the world too x

ArtyFish · 24/05/2019 13:02

Now I really wish I'd named one of my kids Thanos.... :)

Look for the good. The world will seem like a great time to be alive.
Depends on point of view really.

StellarLunar · 24/05/2019 13:08

Twins : Thanos and Thor? Wink

Far2go46 · 24/05/2019 13:10

I'm fairly sure it won't be ok, have you not been paying attention?

LuckyAmy1986 · 24/05/2019 13:23

What’s going on with Canada/US?

Icandothisallday · 24/05/2019 13:28

Twins : Thanos and Thor?

Nah.....you would have a stream of people saying to Thor 'you should go for the head!'.

Thanos did have a point. That was the point of the movie. Too many people living on his planet was destroying it. He was right in that it could be saved if there were less people. But genocide wasnt the way.

The idea was understandable and logical. The execution was what was wrong.

Lifeisabeach09 · 24/05/2019 13:40

Hasn't the world been on the brink of annihilation before? Cold war, anyone?! Same game, different players.
As for poverty, it has always been there-the numbers improve or worsen with the economy, govt spending. Plus we get to hear about it more in this new age of media and social media.
Comparably, it's not quite the poverty of the Victorian era or pre and post war Britain.
In other words, same shit, different day.

SleepingStandingUp · 24/05/2019 13:43

TreadingThePrimrosePath how charming that they consider you having them as you "breeding" Hmm

ArfursSixpences · 24/05/2019 13:44

"Too many people living on his planet was destroying it."

Thanos killed off half the life in the Universe, not just Earth, so it was a bit of an overkill.

NoBaggyPants · 24/05/2019 13:45

It's 2019 and we have ever increasing numbers of homeless people and people (both in and out of work) living in poverty. And we're supposed to write it off as "same shit different day".

It's attitudes like that, that allow this kind of shit shower to continue.

GreytExpectations · 24/05/2019 13:56

@TreadingThePrimrosePath "Breeding"? Really? Hmm

NauseousMum · 24/05/2019 13:57

This, for sure. Thanos destroyed 50% of every species in the universe, people, plants, animals. Not great for those endangered ones. Or for those left behind.

ArtyFish · 24/05/2019 14:02

Man alive this escalated quickly!

Earth wasnt Thanos' planet.

Thanos' plan started on Titan. His home planet. He want to execute 50% of the population. Lottery style. No one would agree to it and the planet died.

That's when he lost his shit and decided to 'save' the whole universe.

As I said, the point of it was that, logically, his original plan made sense. But not the execution.

LuckyAmy1986 · 24/05/2019 14:11

Please someone tell me what’s going on in Canada!

Icandothisallday · 24/05/2019 14:14

Is the OP talking about the trash argument between Canada and the Philippines?

Or the fact they exonerated someone convicted on treason in the 1880s?

There are the 2 main things Google is telling me about Canada today.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 24/05/2019 14:16

The problem is, even if half of all humans ceased to exist, as a species we would simply carry on breeding and be in the same overpopulated boat within a couple of hundred years anyway.

HalfBloodPrincess · 24/05/2019 14:18

Actually, Thanos killed half the population to win the affections of Mistress Death - it had sod all to do with saving the planet - that’s a made up bit by the movie makers.

Icandothisallday · 24/05/2019 14:27

Its well known that marvel cinematic universe has tweaked (or outright changed) story lines. Which is why it's called MCU. In Thanos case, to make him more relatable and for people to on some level agree with the theory of his idea.

LightsInOtherPeoplesHouses · 24/05/2019 14:35

It was a terrible idea. What about the planets where he had already killed half the population, I'm guessing they weren't exempt. And it would cause whole civilizations to collapse, how many more deaths would that cause? That's without the immediate extra deaths caused by children, the elderly or the disabled being abruptly left without support.

What about species on the verge of extinction? Probably the end of them.

It was very badly thought out.

TreadingThePrimrosePath · 24/05/2019 14:47

One of the interesting points about living with autistic adults is the different perspectives they bring to bear, and the honesty that they have when discussing challenging topics. Cognitive dissonance is not on the menu.
DD wants a Dignitas option available in the UK. DS wonders what’s the point of famine relief if the underlying power structures and political conflict means that the consequences are merely that next time round, there are millions more people starving. Most people agree that we need to reduce the population and cut down on everything from plastics to fuel use. No one wants it to be them.
They make me think much harder than when I’m discussing the same topics with other people, it’s a lot more challenging.

Icandothisallday · 24/05/2019 17:31

TreadingThePrimrosePath I totally agree with what you said. My son and I have the same discussions. He isnt convinced, that a lot of charity is good long term.
