to use other people's £5 off vouchers at Morrisons?

SherlockHolmes · 23/05/2019 16:07

The other day I was using the self-checkout and noticed that whoever had been in before me had been issued a £5 off voucher. They were obviously long gone and, as they hadn't taken the voucher, were probably unaware they'd even earned one.

I thought about it while I scanned my shopping, but assumed if I handed it in then the staff would probably either throw it away or use it themselves. So I scanned it and got £5 off my shopping.

Feeling a bit guilty, but does it matter?

Hmm
misskatamari · 23/05/2019 16:17

I'd probably have handed it in as would have felt guilty otherwise, but most people would probably do what you did, and I wouldn't judge you for it. I'd just feel anxious and guilty about it personally so wouldn't

Sparklingbrook · 23/05/2019 16:18

I thought they would be 'attached' to a Morrisons More Card in order to go through so that's interesting it worked.

LoafofSellotape · 23/05/2019 16:18

Would've been a no brainer for me.

PinkHeartLovesCake · 23/05/2019 16:24

I’d use it without any guilt tbh, but this is mumsnet and people on here hand 1p in to the police if they find it on the street. So brace yourself for people telling you your off to hell to burn for eternity

happyhillock · 23/05/2019 16:26

I would have used it without a problem

sweeneytoddsrazor · 23/05/2019 16:27

Would you have handed in a £5 note if they had left their change behind. The staff wouldn't use it themselves because it is a sackabke offense.

22Giraffes · 23/05/2019 16:27

I'd be a bit annoyed as these should be account specific vouchers, but tbh I'd prob be more annoyed at myself for forgetting to take my voucher!

AwdBovril · 23/05/2019 16:30

I handed one in a while ago - I presumed they were attached to an individual account.

Dyrne · 23/05/2019 16:30

I would be way too paranoid to use it if it were me - picturing the person realising and returning to the store, then the staff checking CCTV to see who used it, and tracing me through my points card!

I imagine the staff have far better things to do with their time, but it is technically theft.

AwdBovril · 23/05/2019 16:38

Theft by finding is still theft. And you don't know if that could be money they're relying on - when I was pregnant I got £10 cashback out at the supermarket checkout, & forgot to pick it up. I returned almost immediately but it was gone, it wasn't handed in. DH & I were flat broke & needed it for food, I was devastated.

LoafofSellotape · 23/05/2019 16:41

Theft by finding is still theft no,it's not, especially not with a shop voucher.

Qweenbee · 23/05/2019 16:42

It's a money off voucher, not cash. I'd use it without guilt - and I did hand some cash in that I found, to the police.

SherlockHolmes · 23/05/2019 16:42

You see, I do feel guilty, but didn't think there would be any way that someone would come back for it (as you never know when you're due a voucher). I was at the checkout for quite some time, so if they'd returned then I would have seen them.

If I see another then I'll hand it in. Thanks for your replies.

I used one recently which I found Confused
It wasn’t the same day, I’d picked it up off the self check out along with my (online shopping discount) and stuffed it in my purse.
Few days later went to pay and realised I had it and used it against my shopping. Feel a bit bad actually.
On the same thread I also found £10 note just outside the store, I went and handed that in.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 23/05/2019 16:46

Does it not say on your receipt that you received a voucher? I know not everybody picks up their receipt but sometimes people take them hone and check them.

GhostsInSnow · 23/05/2019 16:46

I had a brief fucking awful stint working in the Co Op where the tills spit out vouchers with an alarming regularity. If the customer didn't want the voucher I'd keep it to one side and then use it for the next customer that qualified (25p off bread for example).

Most of the checkout staff did the same, including the manager. Might as well pass on the saving.

princessl87 · 23/05/2019 16:51

They would know they had missed a voucher as it tells you on your receipt and on the app etc how many points you have and when you were given them. They might not realise straight away but they will at some point.
They should be handed in just the same as £5 note should be handed in. My mum had this happen to her after saving points up for months. However my mil has kept them on several occasions :(

amusedbush · 23/05/2019 16:53

Fuck me, I must be a right criminal because I'd have used it without a second thought!

ExhaustedGrinch · 23/05/2019 16:54

Given that so many people are forced to use food banks these days I think it's a bit shit to just take it, you don't know how much that could have helped someone out. Sure, it may belong to someone who wouldn't miss it but chances are it doesn't so I think YWBU to just take it and use it for yourself.

BreconBeBuggered · 23/05/2019 16:54

Someone had nicked one I was due at the self-service checkout after I'd left. I only noticed when my points balance after my next shop was something like 20 rather than over 5,000. I got a replacement, so it's not as if someone who'd feel the loss couldn't do the same if they rang up.
MIL used to give me her £5 vouchers, and I used them no problem, but I think she's given up collecting points now. Or giving them to me at any rate.

Calloway · 23/05/2019 17:01

Me too!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 23/05/2019 17:05

Brecon - was that also at Morrison's or another store?

I would have thought that, if you didn't have the loyalty card that went with the savings, then the discount shouldn't have been applied to your shop, so that's a very poor situation with the vouchers. I wouldn't have even tried to use it because my assumption would have been that it wouldn't work.

WhoAteMyNuts · 23/05/2019 17:06

Thanks to this thread I have just changed mine to be used automatically when I scan the card so it won't be printed and forgotten about at the till.

I would have handed it in hoping that they could track down the card and add it back.

Crinkle77 · 23/05/2019 17:07

I've done it.
