To think tuna is not vegetarian!

A member of my team has been involved in arranging a small event at work, which was taking place today. I'm on leave but dropped her a quick text to see how it was going, and also asked her to let me know particularly what she thought of the lunch provided/any delegate feedback about it as it was the first time we've used these particular caterers. Company policy is now to order vegetarian options only as standard.

She has just replied "lunch was fine - samosas, spring rolls, quiches (leek & cheese, broccoli), dips with raw veg crudites, sandwiches/wraps (salad, cheese, tuna mayo, egg & tomato) and lots of fruit".

Tuna?? On a vegetarian platter? AIBU to think the catering company has dropped a bollock here?

Vegetarians eat only vegetables ( and possibly Eggs and Dairy)

well, that's nonsense for a start.

BreconBeBuggered · 23/05/2019 15:41

I've been to a few buffets where the 'vegetarian' option is a tuna sandwich, so it's not an uncommon misconception. As I haven't touched the stuff, or indeed eaten anything with a face, for nearly 40 years, it seems to me about time people did some thinking, but I get tetchy when I'm hungry and have nowhere else to get food.

crazyasafox · 23/05/2019 15:41

I can't believe any sensible, functioning human being, with an actual BRAIN thinks that they are a vegetarian if they eat fish! Confused

I mean, reeeeeeeally? Hmm

RiftGibbon · 23/05/2019 15:42

Eating fish doesn't make you vegetarian (even if you don't eat red meat). Vegetarians don't eat any animals - whether they walk, hop, fly, swim or otherwise move themselves around.

stucknoue · 23/05/2019 15:42

Tuna is fish, that's not vegetarian and tuna has dubious environmental credentials anyway. I would have refused to pay the full bill! My dd is veggie and she doesn't eat fish, people who call themselves vegetarian but eat fish aren't vegetarian!

ahnow · 23/05/2019 15:43

I had an argument recently with the organiser of an event- asked if there was any vegetarian option and was given a tuna sandwich! At least yours was a stray meat in a veggie platter- who caters for a lunch for 60 without any vegetarian option?

RiftGibbon · 23/05/2019 15:43

Would like to add that years ago I went to visit a friend in another European Country, stayed overnight. She knew I was vegetarian but obviously didn't understand it as for our meal she was ready to prepare pasta with a cheese & ham sauce. When I politely mentioned that I couldn't eat ham she said, "Oh I thought you meant you didn't eat beef."

Notthetoothfairy · 23/05/2019 15:44

It’s not but, if I worked at your company, I would be grateful for the misunderstanding and enjoy the tuna!

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 23/05/2019 15:45

I think that probably as many people think vegetarians eat fish as people think eggs are dairy.

floribunda18 · 23/05/2019 15:45

FISH is MEAT. IT is the carcass of a dead animal. there's no grey area.

Apart from that bit under the salmon skin, that's a grey area.

hellsbellsmelons · 23/05/2019 15:45

If you eat fish and not meat then you are a PESCATARIAN!!!!
It's bloody annoying.
I have a 'vegetarian' friend who eats chicken!
I just don't even bother trying to explain it any more!

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 23/05/2019 15:47

can everyone stop shouting?

Lweji · 23/05/2019 15:47

Some omnivores choose not to eat meat or fish. They are still omnivores.

Good point, although I don't think that people who eat omnivore diets need to get a label.

Just a thought. I draw my line at insects and worms. What should I call myself?

Getting back to the OP, maybe the tuna mayo was indeed the vegan variant?
The problem is that if it's really similar, how can anyone tell if it's the animal or a fake animal?

LimeKiwi · 23/05/2019 15:48

Tuna is NOT vegetarian!! Vegetarians don't eat any meat, fish or animal products (such as gelatine etc)
As Phoebe from Friends would say - don't eat anything with a face Smile

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 23/05/2019 15:48

Rift - yes. A lot of people think meat specifically means beef/lamb.

HagridsBigToe · 23/05/2019 15:49

I was a pescatarian for years, I used to call myself vegetarian cos it was easier. (and I ate fish about twice a year anyway). But yeah, if you order e vegetarian catering option, tuna shouldn't be on it because it's not a vegetarian option.

AdoraBell · 23/05/2019 15:49

Many years ago DH bought a quiche for vegetarian SIL. Quiche Lorraine. This, according to him, should have been fine because bacon isn’t meat. He argued with me but shut up and listened to MIL, since then I don’t even think about what he buys or prepares for his DSis. He’s known her much longer than I have so he is better placed to know what she won’t eat.

Rant over.

YANBU OP and I agree with complaining to the supplier.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat are you saying you couldn't manage one meal without meat?!

That’s not really the point. I have a massive problem with people deciding for me and imposing their own life choices on to me.

Lweji · 23/05/2019 15:50

don't eat anything with a face

Yes, but what about clams, for example?

BogglesGoggles · 23/05/2019 15:51

Of course it’s not vegetarian. Nor are vegetarians who eat it. Looks like you got a pescatarian plate unstead.

Nesssie · 23/05/2019 15:51

Wow whats with all the name calling 'twat' and 'bellend' jesus.
Just be happy they are cutting out some forms of meat. No need to get angry about it.

Kanga83 · 23/05/2019 15:52

Vegetarians don't eat meat or fish! Or gelatine, rennet in cheese etc. I've been veggie for years. This winds me up no end. If you eat fish but not meat, you are pescatarian.

Graphista · 23/05/2019 15:54

"but are not a pain in the arse about someone making them a chicken sandwich, or faddily cutting out entire food groups." ODFOD!

We are entitled to have our decision to be vegetarian for whatever reason respected.

For some it's not ethical it's for health reasons and giving them meat without being honest can cause distressing symptoms.

"I would consider you an omnivore, which is what the majority of human beings are. I don't see why it needs an additional label." Exactly!
