To think tuna is not vegetarian!

A member of my team has been involved in arranging a small event at work, which was taking place today. I'm on leave but dropped her a quick text to see how it was going, and also asked her to let me know particularly what she thought of the lunch provided/any delegate feedback about it as it was the first time we've used these particular caterers. Company policy is now to order vegetarian options only as standard.

She has just replied "lunch was fine - samosas, spring rolls, quiches (leek & cheese, broccoli), dips with raw veg crudites, sandwiches/wraps (salad, cheese, tuna mayo, egg & tomato) and lots of fruit".

Tuna?? On a vegetarian platter? AIBU to think the catering company has dropped a bollock here?

All this labelling of people according to what they eat does my head in. This is one reason why i stopped being vegan.

@GinUnicorn - there are so many Vegan wines out there now - very easy to find in supermarkets. But yes, look for the vegetarian information on the bottle to be sure they're made without isinglass and other animal products. (Otherwise you can be certain they were).

On if fish feel fear and pain - DF used to be a fisherman, he says if fish could scream no one would eat them. Can you imagine the noise from one of those nets hauled up full of fish if every one of them was crying out?

I'm sure they do feel fear and pain - pain is a warning to not injure yourself, and fear is for avoiding danger.

If they didn't experience fear, surely they wouldn't make any effort to avoid predators?

Saying that I’m now going to have to check wines as genuinely had no clue some wines aren’t vegetarian and I’ve been veggie (no rennet, gelatine etc for 20 years)

Yes, it's something to do with the making it process (sorry, don't have the technical jargon lol) - fish guts used I think, definitely not veggie for some!
Eggs and milk used a lot too.
Sainsbury's is great for labelling wine as vegan or putting the ingredients on the back so you know you're definitely getting a veggie friendly one.

Don’t you think it’s quite useful to have defined categories so you know what someone does and doesn’t eat? It makes it much easier to know what to feed someone.

You stopped caring about animals and the planet because you didn’t like what some people called each other?

Thanks for the tips. I’ll make sure I check now. Feel stupid but it’s genuinely never occurred to me wine wouldn’t be vegetarian.

Don't feel stupid, I didn't realise until DH became vegan a couple of years ago.
You'd be amazed how many people genuinely have no idea, they look at you like you're daft if you say wine has milk or eggs/fish in it lol.

Jeez, I am shocked tbh that people still think that vegetarians eat fish! You used to see fish in the vegetarian section of restaurant menus years ago but thankfully not so much now.

As a vegetarian this is my big bear.

I once met someone who told me his wife was a vegetarian 'but she does eat chicken'. Not sure if that's worse than claiming tuna is vegetarian or not.

A lot of pescatarians say they are vegetarian, or choose vegetarian option. There does seem to be a lot of confusion. If you eat fish you are not vegetarian.

There seems to be confusion between vegetarian and 'don't eat meat' . a lot of people. A lot of people equate them and think well fish isn't meat or even chicken isn't meat.

I'm getting really hungry reading this thread, just can't decide...tuna sandwich or egg sandwich?

I’m a pescatarian and don’t say I’m a vegetarian (I don’t say anything really unless it’s absolutely necessary) but I do often choose the vegetarian option - why wouldn’t I? I don’t eat meat so I don’t want the meat option, and there’s not usually a third ‘pescatarian’ option, but even if there was I only eat a small amount of fish which I’m trying to reduce anyway.

How can anyone think tuna - a fish - is vegetarian?! Are some of you pulling my leg or something?
