To think tuna is not vegetarian!

A member of my team has been involved in arranging a small event at work, which was taking place today. I'm on leave but dropped her a quick text to see how it was going, and also asked her to let me know particularly what she thought of the lunch provided/any delegate feedback about it as it was the first time we've used these particular caterers. Company policy is now to order vegetarian options only as standard.

She has just replied "lunch was fine - samosas, spring rolls, quiches (leek & cheese, broccoli), dips with raw veg crudites, sandwiches/wraps (salad, cheese, tuna mayo, egg & tomato) and lots of fruit".

Tuna?? On a vegetarian platter? AIBU to think the catering company has dropped a bollock here?

Magpie either ignorance or because they find a vegan diet too inconvenient, usually.

AnAC12UCOinanOCG · 24/05/2019 17:17

I mean 'ignorant ' in the sense of not knowing rather than as an insult.

Graphista · 24/05/2019 17:31

Willow - ahhh so now we can understand WHY you've been defensive of people calling themselves veggie when they're not. Well it may bother you - doesn't mean it isn't true. If your dd is still eating meat by products she is NOT veggie

Does she know haribo contains meat products? If she doesn't know is that because you've (meaning you and her father) deliberately not told her?

Sherlock you're adding to the confusion displayed by the wedding hosts asking re chicken. You're pescetarian not veggie

It might make things easy for you but you're making life difficult for actual veggies

MagpieTree · 24/05/2019 17:34

I wonder if fish feel pain / fear in the same way that animals do?

Kpo58 · 24/05/2019 17:45

I would have thought that fish do feel feel fear/pain like other animals do.

Why do people keep saying meat and fish when fish IS meat? It's nonsensical, like saying dogs and labradors.

Lweji · 24/05/2019 17:53

Fish ARE animals!

And fish do feel pain and stress.

As do insects, slugs, clams, worms, lobsters, etc.

The "way" varies because the nervous systems are built differently in different animals. Fish are vertebrates and have brains. I'm sure cows and chickens aren't much more intelligent than some fish.

MagpieTree · 24/05/2019 18:21

Sorry, I meant mammals. I still don't get why it's okay to mince a chick, but not to kill a fish.

Aleela55 · 24/05/2019 20:33

Would vegans eat eggs laid by their own chickens in a garden? (Assuming they are vegan due to animal rights and factory farming etc etc)

goodwinter · 24/05/2019 21:30

@Aleela55 Unlikely. Getting your own chickens still contributes to an industry where male chicks are usually ground up at birth.

Catmum26 · 24/05/2019 21:32

it’s actually so weird that i just read this here as i was just looking at a menu for a cafe i am going to tomorrow and there is the ‘v’ next to Tuna baguette. i also saw it at another cafe a few weeks ago and thought it must be a mistake but maybe i’m missing something 🤷‍♀️

PurpleDaisies · 24/05/2019 21:33

Vegans usually adopt ex-battery hens.

AnAC12UCOinanOCG · 24/05/2019 21:36

A vegan wouldn't eat eggs from their own hens because it's not just a diet but a belief that animals aren't here to be used by humans (including having their eggs eaten - hens should actually eat their unfertilised eggs for the calcium).

Didn't know that, thank you.

DS is vegetarian and would definitely give me a Hmm face if I said tuna as a veggie option. He's 8.

He doesn't eat sweets/marshmallows/jelly with gelatin or any sauces that contain meat products. He questions everything I buy and checks for the approved green V on all packaging. If he did eat haribo or whatever, I would say he isn't veggie. He would too.

He became vegetarian over a year ago so in a way he's not veggie due to his historical meat eating, if you want to be pernickety Wink

PurpleDaisies · 24/05/2019 22:19

There’s not a unanimous verdict on that AnAC12UCOinanOCG

As a vegetarian this is my big bear. Our catering staff at work have tried passing off fish as the veggi option and I nearly ordered it but questioned what the pink stuff was (salmon).

Vegetarians not eat fish, pescatarians eat fish but not meat.

It's not as simple as this but I always loved Phoebe from friends saying 'nothing with a face'

hibbledibble · 24/05/2019 23:11

It's good to see that your company is reducing meat consumption, for environmental reasons. Even better would be to order only vegan, but that may be too much of a change for some.

Absolutely agree that fish is not vegetarian, sadly many are mistaken on this point though. I went to a wedding once as a veggie and the very posh venue gave fish as a starter, and couldn't understand the issue.

I'm vegan now, as it makes most sense from and ethical and environmental point of view. I don't understand the veggie bashing from meat eaters that always happens on these threads though. Veggies are doing there part, and it should be applauded, rather than criticised. Yes, vegan is best ethically and environmentally, but I realise transitioning feels daunting to many (it did to me, which is why I was veggie for a long time)

Nikhedonia · 24/05/2019 23:17

People who claim they are vegetarian but eat fish really piss me off.

What part is that? Virtue signally how worthy they are whilst ignoring the reality of the dairy and egg industry?

Krunch · 25/05/2019 04:37

Wow!-its soo simple ,are fishes animal or plants? I rest my case!! Fish classesd as vegetarian food- it's simply non-sensical old fashioned thinking from pre-80's when vegetarianism was a somewhat foreign concept. These days people have adopted very flexible diets & there seems to be a shift to cutting down on processed & red meat.More & more people are automatically eating predominantly vegan/Vegetarian meals without even realising.Overall better for the environment & health-a win win outcome.Food manufacturing & catering companies also need to catch up & wise up fast to what's what!.

GinUnicorn · 25/05/2019 07:36

I don’t get the eating Parmesan thing. There is a great alternative (Sainsbury’s basic range) which is great. Likewise gelatine there are loads of non gelatine sweets. It’s easy enough to avoid.

Saying that I’m now going to have to check wines as genuinely had no clue some wines aren’t vegetarian and I’ve been veggie (no rennet, gelatine etc for 20 years)

soulrider · 25/05/2019 07:50

It used to be the majority of wines used animal derived products in their manufacture - not sure if that's changed more recently. They don't have to be on an ingredients list though, I'd only assume wine was vegetarian if it had a label saying so.

bruffin · 25/05/2019 08:19

Cider isnt vegetarian either

Krunch · 25/05/2019 09:01

I suggest government should should make it mandatory for ALL foods & drinks to have V for Vegetarian & v for vegan -how hard could that be? BiscuitWineCakeGin

ThisIsMyID · 25/05/2019 09:20

Tuna -
Definitely not veggie. It's from an animal. I'd also question if the cheese was veggie, or if it was made with Rennet (can you tell I've lived with a veggie for years?).
