Grown Men 'Fan-Girl'-ing on The Breakfast Show

Just that really. I've listened to R2 in the morning for ever. Through the Wogan years since my childhood, to Chris Evans and now to Zoe Ball. Whilst no one could ever measure up to Terry in my eyes I am not that fussy as long as there's cheerful music, a bit of banter and the news. And NO adverts.
However, I find myself switching over to other stations more and more on the school run now as I cannot abide the relentless, fan-girl wittering about the spice girls by the traffic announcer.
AIBU to expect the show host to stop encouraging this ridiculousness and steer him toward more professional behaviour. Even Chris Evans knew when they had gone too far with silliness and reined it in.

The absolute worst for silliness was Terry Wogan and his inane, childish attempt at humour with his Janet and John stories or whatever that were. A bunch of adults sniggering like 12 year olds at poorly written double entendres.

Everything that has gone since has been an improvement.

araiwa · 23/05/2019 13:44

Good misogyny op

ginghamtablecloths · 23/05/2019 14:00

I've given up on Radio 2 except for Ken Bruce. I preferred Chris Evans when he was on drive time - he's too in your face in the morning. Even Ken has a job to rein in the new traffic chap who again is a bit OTT, I'm afraid. I can imagine him on stage as a pantomime dame. Bring back the gentle Lynn Bowles.

Bezalelle · 23/05/2019 14:03

Surely they were fan-boying. Dimwitted obsessive behaviour isn't the sole province of "girls".

Sparklingbrook · 23/05/2019 14:06

Put Radio One on. Greg James is brilliant. Music, banter, and the news all there. Plus he's very funny.

Mordred · 23/05/2019 14:11

"A bunch of adults sniggering like 12 year olds at poorly written double entendres. "

Amanda needed a few drinks first, because she'd never been taken up the Oxo Tower before.

Mordred · 23/05/2019 14:12

6 Music in the morning is the best option. Radio 2 will always be limited by its worst feature: the Radio 2 playlist.

Milicentbystander72 · 23/05/2019 14:30

I switched from R2 in the Chris Evans years to Absolute Radio. I love the breakfast show, and they never talk over the songs and play a huge variety.

Second after Absolute is 6Music (although Cerys Matthews does my head in at weekends)

KurriKawari · 23/05/2019 14:37

sparklingbrook Greg James is very under rated and in a league of his own, hope he isn't pinched by R2/R4. I hope he stays loyal to R1. Very funny, but also his charity work has been awe inspiring. And a few weeks ago a male listener wrote in about his mental health and Greg was great in how he spoke about it, encouraged others, much more mature and grown up then R1 has a reputation for.

DioneTheDiabolist · 23/05/2019 15:01

The poorly written double entendre has been scientifically proven to improve the start of the day.Hmm

Mrs. Bickerdyke had just spent all afternoon tasting Ben and Jerry's. Next week she is going to Devon to get some hot winkles in cider.

Sparklingbrook · 23/05/2019 15:39

Totally agree Kurri, he seems such a genuine person.

chugmonkey · 23/05/2019 17:23

Appreciate the recommendations, I'll give them all a go.

Sorry but I sniggered at the 'Janet and John' examples given above, I must be very infantile.

As for misogyny, I thought the phrase was 'fan girl', happy to use 'fan boy' in an equally derogatory manner.

Zoe Ball spends the whole time gushing over guests, v annoying.

cardibach · 23/05/2019 17:28

If you enjoyed Evans, his Virgin radio breakfasts show has no ads. It was part of his deal wit( them. It’s essentially the radio 2 show he was doing at the Beeb.

pictish · 23/05/2019 17:33

I was glad to see the back of Chris Evans with his Royal arse-licking and references to ‘Tash’ as well as bloody Carfest which sounds shit. I ended up so irritated by him I had to switch him off. I thought Zoe Ball would be an improvement but she’s just quite dull isn’t she? Hate the ‘Show and Tell’ feature.

I’d have Ken Bruce in the breakfast slot. That’s when I want the radio on...on my way to work. Sara Cox was ok too.

Sparklingbrook · 24/05/2019 11:05

@KurriKawari did you see the sheep race this morning? Grin

KurriKawari · 24/05/2019 15:35

sparklingbrook no missed :( think its online so will watch it back, social media comments have been funny!
Is it weird that at 39 I wish if I'd ever had a son, I'd have wanted him to be like Greg?! :/

Sparklingbrook · 24/05/2019 15:38

it was just so daft. Grin

I think a lot of men should be more Greg. His wife seems like a lovely person too.
