Choices are:

BBQ
Meats (not sausages & burgers), salads, bread etc

Small hog roast
Suckling pig (only 26 guests), salads, bread etc

Steak or fish & chips, wedding cake as dessert

3 course meal with chocolates & coffee etc

Free choice off the menu: starter/main/dessert

Other, please elaborate

What would you prefer and any particular reason why?

Do not give your guests bibs!!!

Eliza9919 · 25/05/2019 20:04

@justasking111 I was thinking of getting a bridal bib, it's basically an apron to protect your dress.

Although, when we have BBQ at home it's not messy, so I don't understand all the messy in finery comments. We may get messy fingers but thats it, I can look for a catering pack of the little wipes you get from kfc to put all over the tables, or ask for finger bowls.

I can drop out the chicken wings too. Then it's all food that can be eaten with knives and forks.

Bbq sounds lovely but I wouldn't eat chicken unless it had been finished off in the oven, I spent my whole childhood eating dry overcooked chicken as my parents were paranoid about food poisoning. Their set bbq menu looks totally uninspiring though, even as a meat-eater I like things like stuffed peppers and halloumi, otherwise it's very meaty and heavy. I also agree it would be nicer if it was sit down and the bbq served to you, it's not just elderly who can't cope standing up and queuing particularly if it's very hot.

BackforGood · 25/05/2019 20:12

If I were invited to a wedding that was a BBQ, I'd smile and be polite, but, in truth am amazed at the amount of love for a BBQ at a wedding on this thread.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a BBQ in the garden in my jeans / shorts with a few people, but it doesn't say 'wedding' to me at all, and I think it is incredibly difficult to get right for more than 1/2 a dozen people.
If it were practical, then free choice from the menu sounds most hospitable, as everyone gets their favourites, though I'm not sure how it would work with so many people to be served at once.
I@m a fan of a sit down 3 course meal at a wedding though.

maddiemookins16mum · 25/05/2019 20:12

We had a BBQ, lovely kebabs and lamb and posh round sausages (plus veggie kebabs too). It was lovely.

marl · 25/05/2019 20:12

3 course meal definitely. I enjoy conversation, sitting down, lack of mess and dropping it on yourself... and have a vegi partner so bbq or suckling pig is less great for him.

Coulddowithanap · 25/05/2019 20:17

I prefer a 3 course sit down meal at a wedding (even better if it's a roast!) . I've been to a few where they had BBQ or hog roast (the one where we didn't have a set seat wasn't so good as we didn't know anyone at the wedding so sat alone.. obviously knew the bride and groom lol)

BBQ in the evening works well if you have a sit down meal during the day.

Eliza9919 · 25/05/2019 20:19

@BackforGood we aren't going for a formal wedding vibe though, more of a relaxed garden party feel.

It's a registry office ceremony and then relaxed food and drinks after. No speeches or first dance. We aren't pomp and ceremony people.

Last time I had hog roast, at a posh hotel, there were loads of flies landing on the pig.I was really looking forward to it, but couldn't eat any of it, or since.I would have the steak and wedding cake, lovely.

soundsystem · 25/05/2019 20:21

BBQ gets my vote too, even as a veggie! Nice salads, pitta, but if hummus and some veg kebabs would be great!

clairemcnam · 25/05/2019 20:40

What do you consider nice salads?

Celebelly · 25/05/2019 20:43

Chicken Balmoral is chicken (obv) stuffed with haggis and in a peppercorn sauce. It's alright but three weddings in a row had it as the main course 😩 It's a staple of Scottish weddings held in dilapidated hotels with tired reception rooms and an awful DJ.

Celebelly · 25/05/2019 20:45

We always do chicken and chorizo skewers with peppers when we barbecue. Chorizo tastes lovely when barbecued, especially when it's a little burnt around the edges!

C0untDucku1a · 25/05/2019 20:48

I couldnt be there with a hog roast. Sad

What id want is decent vegetarian options, and not just what was created as a side salad for the meat eaters. A family wedding recently I had a vegetarian meal for wedding breakfast but there was no veggie option for the evening reception as theyd gone for bacon and sausage sandwiches. The waitress that dealt with me at lunch brought me something out when i asked and she was lovely (the clearly thrown together vegie option was not), but ffs vegetarian isnt that unusual for it not to have been a consideration!

BackforGood · 25/05/2019 21:47

and I hope you have a lovely day Eliza. I was just responding to your question what would I prefer Smile

This is our reception meal, get married on 21st June in Cyprus so going to be hot!

To ask what meal you would prefer at a wedding
Frittata · 25/05/2019 22:07

Depends who I was sitting next to - if someone nice then three course meal.

justasking111 · 25/05/2019 22:49

Kelly that looks fantastic. We went to a Cypriot wedding once, it was amazing, very hot the bride and groom had the whole village attending they stood in the heat greeting everyone receiving envelopes and money and giving out sugared almonds. Have a lovely day.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/05/2019 23:18

Kelly I agree that sounds fantastic, but where's the portokalopita? Wink

I got addicted to that on Greek holidays and can't imagine a buffet without it!!

zukiecat · 26/05/2019 09:14

Three course meal would be my choice, I love having a designated seat, and because I so very very rarely go out it would be a real treat.

Second choice would be to choose off the menu.

BBQ wouldn't appeal much to me, and I'd hate a hog roast because I don't like pork really, so I'd be starving!

TatianaLarina · 26/05/2019 15:41

Kelly I want to come to your wedding just for the food. 😻
