Choices are:

BBQ
Meats (not sausages & burgers), salads, bread etc

Small hog roast
Suckling pig (only 26 guests), salads, bread etc

Steak or fish & chips, wedding cake as dessert

3 course meal with chocolates & coffee etc

Free choice off the menu: starter/main/dessert

Other, please elaborate

What would you prefer and any particular reason why?

@HiJenny35
The BBQ at weddings I have been to were still served, no fingers!

DarlingNikita · 23/05/2019 13:32

I think if there are any elderly relatives this is a factor as well.

The ones I've been to, those who were elderly or otherwise couldn't stand for long sat down and people got their food for them.

LazyLizzy · 23/05/2019 13:32

Suckling pig (only 26 guests)

26 pork lovers, what's the chances?
I'm a meat eater but never eat pork. At least with a BBQ there's a choice.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 23/05/2019 13:33

1- BBQ
2- Hog roast
3- 3 course

As long as there are tables etc to sit at- I hate walking around with food (and I always make a mess guaranteed!).

thecatsthecats · 23/05/2019 13:34

BBQ, or perhaps other street food type option (paella etc seems popular).

And the golden rule is PLENTY and TIMELY.

The most stressed I've ever seen a bride was when the catering was late and delivered slowly. But there were no canapes or nibbles, nothing but a few sweets on the table, and 'cake as a dessert' wasn't planned so that there was a slice for everyone...

Her evening buffet was actually very generous, but since everyone had eaten their own arm by then, it was too late to solve the stress of not being ready before!

VeganSteve · 23/05/2019 13:35

BBQ! We had one and it was great, guests still mention what a great time they had Smile we had it served to the tables though, so a tray of meats at each table with bowls of various salads, plus veggie options. Choice of two desserts.

WhoWasIt · 23/05/2019 13:37

I'd prefer to sit down to a nice plate of roast beef and yorkshire puds. Grin
It all sounds lovely OP, but as others have said, if the weather isn't so good and we're all dressed in our sunday best then we dont want to risk getting food all over ourselves ( tbf, i can manage that even sat down )
I once attended a wedding which had a bbq reception. On my way back from collecting my food, i tripped up. The food went one way, i went the other and my dress tore from the small slit at the back right upto the waist. Blush

DontCallMeShitley · 23/05/2019 13:37

I couldn't eat near a hog roast.

Prefer a normal buffet with fish and vegetarian options. However the best I ever went to was a choice of salady starters on the tables for people to help themselves, main course were served at a table, individually so you went to queue, there was a choice of 3, maybe 4 meals to cater for pescetarian, vegetarian and carnivore, plenty for everyone and I think some had seconds. Pudding was a whole Pavlova on each table.

One of the best meals I ever had.

The smell of BBQ gets into everything and clothes stink for ever after and needs to be carefully done if you have vegetarian or vegan guests.

Fish and chips isn't wedding food.

Inmyvestandpants · 23/05/2019 13:37

Fish and chips is the food of the gods.

My last 2 experiences of a BBQ at a wedding / big do were that the food was delayed, and overcooked. It's not easy to do a good BBQ for a large group.

I think for a wedding, I'd go for choice off the menu. People prefer to sit down to eat if they're wearing posh clothes. It doesn't have to be "formal" just because the food is brought to the tables, and if you provide a choice you will probably please more people.

MatchSetPoint · 23/05/2019 13:39

Three course meal (and a cheese board) I went to a wedding which was ‘bbq buffet style’ it just didn’t feel right I hate doing the queuing system, table by table so the last table ends up with odds and ends, same with hog roast it’s also rubbish for vegetarians and vegans.

SisterFarAway · 23/05/2019 13:39

My sister had a BBQ buffet at her wedding and it was lovely. I was a bit meh when she told me, but it was a really good idea.

TheTitOfTheIceberg · 23/05/2019 13:39

Sit down free choice meal, or served BBQ with plentiful good veggie/vegan options.

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/05/2019 13:40

Steak. But I love steak 🤷🏻‍♀️

hellsbellsmelons · 23/05/2019 13:40

I'm not a huge meat fan but do like a BBQ.
As long as Salmon or halloumi was on the menu, I'd be happy.

Dillyson · 23/05/2019 13:41

We had a hog roast and salads at our wedding. We also offered salmon or veg burgers.
Pudding was strawberries and raspberries and cream. All very simple, so my vote is the bbq!

Paddy1234 · 23/05/2019 13:43

A friend of mine just catered for a BBQ at a wedding - take some pointers off there menu!

To ask what meal you would prefer at a wedding
Plump82 · 23/05/2019 13:44

Any of the options apart from the hog roast. I'd find that pretty upsetting and would probably be put off my food if i saw it. Make sure there's plenty veggie options of you have any vegetarians as in my experience the non vegetarians like to fill up on the veggie stuff as well!

Ohtherewearethen · 23/05/2019 13:44

I love a hog roast! Plus, it's not something the average Joe has at home. It is important that you have adequate seating and crockery/cutlery/napkins to eat it in a dignified and tidy way!
Good luck! To be honest all of the ideas sound lovely x

AryaStarkWolf · 23/05/2019 13:45

Also in the BBQ but veggie camp

Disfordarkchocolate · 23/05/2019 13:46

Not the suckling pig, I'm not vegetarian but they just look too sad.

DarlingNikita · 23/05/2019 13:47

Fish and chips isn't wedding food.

Right then, that's everyone told Grin

SurferRona · 23/05/2019 13:47

Still sit down for me. Blush. Had wedding w BBQ, was just so....ordinary. The queueing. And had to perch on a narrow stone bench and balance the plate with curry and drink on ground. Felt undignified to me. Not good!

Pinkvoid · 23/05/2019 13:47

Three course meal with a veggie option. Other options are very meat heavy and I can’t stand the vile sight of a hog roast.

justasking111 · 23/05/2019 13:48

Friends had a bbq, lovely puddings and the wedding cake was made of cheeses so we had an awesome cheeseboard.

kenandbarbie · 23/05/2019 13:49

BBQ, but why no sausage and burgers Sad

Or a three course meal possibly depending on venue.

I've been to some functions where bbqs really badly done with food ready at all different times and people waiting for parts of their meal.

Hog roasts to me are just like a food poisoning buffet 🤮 I know two people who have got really badly sick for weeks from different ones.
