According to IDS, Trump may be cancelling his UK tour if May is going to resign/be pushed out over the next few days.

Finally something positive coming out of Brexit.

Oh give over.
I don't like the man but he has been democratically elected by our closer Allies.
We don't have many friends left in the world right now.

Cariadne · 22/05/2019 18:50

I don't like the man but he has been democratically elected by our closer Allies.

By way of a voting system which has been gerrymandered into absurdity...

And honestly, having no allies would be better than an incompetent war-monger who simply doesn’t haven’t the intellectual capacity to cope with foreign policy.

Fridaysgirl · 22/05/2019 18:54

Yes and we had Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary who was also woeful in his Foreign policy and currently have fundamentally flawed electoral system.
Accept a democratically elected leader and swallow your prejudice.

Damn. All the money wasted importing this.

Though searching for that, I found something far more mumsnet.

other way round. He wants her gone, because of Huawei. He will prefer her not to be there.

Prejudice? Hmm
"preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience"

Cariadne · 22/05/2019 19:01

Accept a democratically elected leader and swallow your prejudice.

I’m not suggesting assassinating him. I can accept that he is the American president and still be glad that an enormous amount of tax payer funding won’t be expended on a visit by him when I think he is nothing but a loose canon and an idiot.

As for the second part of your statement, if you think that objecting to a racist, sexist, homophobic bigot who has systematically profited from decades of financial impropriety and who fundamentally lacks the ability to understand how governing works in a manner which is actively endangering his own citizens and those of other counties is just a ‘prejudice’ I have to swallow, then you don’t understand how democracy works.

Fridaysgirl · 22/05/2019 20:17

To re-iterate I personally detest the man.

However- democracy (def)= a system of government by which the whole population is eligible to vote. And flawed or not that is what happened in the US voted in by over 53 million people who democratically voted him in as President.

Did you object so vociferously when President Xi visited in 2015 or how about King Abdhulla visited in 2007?Both of these are not democratically elected. Both responsible for execution, persecution, oppression and poor human rights records.

Somehow even these were overlooked as the visits were advantageous to the UK.
So is the Trump visit.

ForalltheSaints · 22/05/2019 20:22

IDS is the only Tory leader to be voted out of his position in a no-confidence vote since Neville Chamberlain. So I'm not sure I would believe him.

He is also responsible for the welfare system that has seen many people in poverty and many suicides.

Cariadne · 22/05/2019 20:27

Did you object so vociferously

By this, do you mean ‘two posts on a mumsnet thread’?

No, I wasn’t on mumsnet in 2007 or 2015.

I have, however, been politically aware and active for many years and can assure you I have objected to the state visits of other leaders whom I consider to be perpetrators or human rights abuses and civil liberty violations.

Drasticaction · 22/05/2019 20:31

I wonder what on earth is happening today us or has politics always been like this.

Trump is gung hi , tells like he sees it business Man. He has no diplomacy, no subtle strategies... no learning of political ways.

I've always thought him utterly ridiculous and I've certainly been concerned at many points ,but I also think a shake up is sometimes needed!

What appalls me is there was no such back lash when other disturbing disgusting leaders have come.
. this is what's scares me, it's the sheep mentally of joining the club..hate trump.

YeOldeTrout · 22/05/2019 20:37

Finally something positive coming out of Brexit.

Hoorah! Grin

Trump lost the popular vote. Can I just remind anyone who didn't realise that. Besides, as Steve Schmidt wryly points out, if you put up 2 unelectable candidates then one of them has to win. Winning doesn't mean the winner was the most loved candidate.
