It is honestly bothering me now I have thought of it - how did they become the main three flavours?

Stem Ginger is one of my favourite flavours, though it's hard to find commercially and often insipid when you do. I've been known to make it myself.

I love this book for all the weird and wonderful flavours suggested Melt www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1471101916/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_x9X4Cb12MAX0E?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Main ones were Neapolitan ice cream. Pink ice cream or yellow ice cream. That was that 😀 then we got those fancy tubs. Then ice cream died

StillCoughingandLaughing · 20/05/2019 22:48

I’ve just bought the new Waitrose raspberry trifle ice cream I can wait to try it!

It’s soooo nice 😛

I love mint chocolate chip. And the lemon ice you used to get from an ice cream van I loved as well. My faves

Branleuse · 20/05/2019 22:55

mint choc chip and rasperry ripple are pretty standard too

GabsAlot · 20/05/2019 22:57

I'm obsessed with mint cornetto at mo!

easy coffee ice cream recipe You don’t need the liqueur. You can thank me (and Nigella) later.

Smidge001 · 21/05/2019 07:44

mrsterry are there cars in ice cream?? I thought they were in bread/potatoes/flour based products. Isn't ice cream just dairy?

Smidge001 · 21/05/2019 07:45

Ooohh.... The sugar!! Blush

MustardScreams · 21/05/2019 07:47

Morrisons Mint Choc Chip is delicious. A good ratio of chip to ice cream.

This post has conjured up so many memories of my grandparents. They had a shelf full of ice cream sauces and toppings. Ice Magic, (with that mountain like bottle!), jelly diamonds, silver balls, hundreds and thousands...
I can remember trying to sneak the crumbs from the Mini Flake tray like it was yesterday!

sar302 · 21/05/2019 08:29

Aw, my grandparents always used to have ice cream - I think it was called napoliatana? - that was vanilla, chocolate and strawberry next to each other in the same tub. We only ever had vanilla at home when we were little, so it felt incredibly exotic!

BertrandRussell · 21/05/2019 09:29

Imagine how grandparents like that would go down on Mumsnet!

KatyMac · 21/05/2019 10:27

Has anyone found white ice cream anywhere - I loved that!

Even the tesco value version but they changed that into vanilla!

catinboots99 · 21/05/2019 10:29

@MrsTerryPratchett Halo Top ice cream is your low carving friend

catinboots99 · 21/05/2019 10:30

carbing not carving obvs

goose1964 · 21/05/2019 10:30

The best ever was Thayers coffee ice cream, it came in a brick so you could cut it with a knife. It was only available in the Cardiff area.

Boredisboring · 21/05/2019 11:08

OP, it's a very interesting observation. Also, I always thought that vanilla flavour meant plain ie. no flavour. Anyway...a quick Google search came up with some answers.

Vanilla was used in conjunction with cacao for a type of drink in S. America. The Spanish brought this flavour combination to Europe. Meanwhile, the Chinese and Arabs had invented methods for freezing, so developed the first ice cream. The moors then brought ice cream from the Arab world to Spain, where it was combined with the cacao/vanilla pods idea. The French decided to split the flavours and vanilla became synonymous with fancy "french vanilla" ice cream. This became the industry standard across Europe and America.

Chocolate was taken as the other half of the flavour split.

Strawberry? No idea, I think it's American.

I would pay serious money for Gino Ginelli's toffee fudge ice cream to make a comeback. There has never been anything as good as it - all the caramel-type icecreams around now either have rock hard butterscotch lumps in, filling breaking hard toffee, or just straight up taste of water.
