To ask if you know any different, modern versions of ‘Love Divine All Loves Excelling’?

Sorry, stupid AIBU but I’m being driven mad over this version we used to sing in the choir at school. I’ve looked up the modern version on YouTube and it is very similar but in my (possibly imagined) version the lyrics are sung slower to a faster 3/4 rhythm IYKWIM. As in ‘love de-1 2 all 1 2 ex-1 2 3’ Grin sorry if that makes no sense to anyone but me!

It’s also a different melody at some points and for ‘Jesus you are all compassion’ goes to a minor chord.

I’m starting to think maybe my music teacher just did her own arrangement of the modern version and changed things up? Does anyone know of any other versions?

Thank you from my melted brain.

The only 2 I have ever sung to these words are the Blaenworn and the Hyfrydol. I think Abbots Leigh also works. None of these are modern though!

I've just googled and there is a tune called Beecher which could well be the one you are talking about. There is a version on youtube, and the score is on hymnary.org

Thank you for taking the time to reply! No it’s none of these and definitely sounds modern to me although I could be wrong! I should’ve put the YouTube link, this is what I found when I googled ‘Modern love divine’ so I just assumed it was a well known one m.youtube.com/watch?v=

It sounds really similar to that so I’m assuming my teacher just did her own arrangement of this version but it also says it’s by an artist Susan Ashton released in 2007. It would’ve been 1999 when I was singing this in school so I don’t know how that works. Maybe it had been doing the rounds in the evangelical circuit before that, I know my music teacher was a born-again Christian.

Funny the things that burrow into your brain!!

Your link just took me to youtube home page for some reason. But I googled Susan Ashton and I think I found that version. I see you meant really modern Grin. For me, modern hymns are those written at some point after about 1940! Sorry I can't help and I hope you find your version. At Christmas I still frequently have a song stuck in my head from about 1980 that was part of a junior school nativity. Never heard it since. I know exactly what you mean about things that burrow into your brain Smile

Thanks! Grin God love you, teachers really need to think before they teach us these obscure songs we’ll never be able to hear again!
