I want to put together a playlist for my DD as she has a horrendously difficult time ahead of her (you can search my username to see why) I am hoping it will help her in some way...calm her. Take her mind off things.

Palestrina Missa Assumpta est Maria - really beautiful

For cello music Jaqueline du Pre's recording of Faure's Elegy

Sewrainbow · 20/05/2019 18:51

London by Phamie How was beautiful when watching the sun rise once, made me cry though!

Sewrainbow · 20/05/2019 18:52

Gow not how!

Deadheadstickeronacadillac · 20/05/2019 19:02

Mahler's fifth
Vaughn Williams Thomas Tallis variations

RyvitaBrevis · 20/05/2019 21:09

So many great suggestions on here! I would add another vote for Spem in Alium (Tallis).

Can I vote against When I am laid in Earth (Dido's lament) by Purcell? Yes, it's beautiful but potentially depressing if you're going through a hard time.

HarryTheSteppenwolf · 20/05/2019 21:12

Oh gosh, there are dozens...

Barber:
Sibelius:
Satie: ,
Offenbach:
Górecki:
Vivaldi:
Prokofiev: (from Alexander Nevsky)
Strauss: Vier letzte Lieder (particularly )
Berlioz: (from Les Nuits d'Été)

And others too numerous to mention...

Song For Athene by Sir John Travener sung at Diana’s funeral, it is haunting, and gives me goosebumps and tears whenever I hear it.

Unescorted · 20/05/2019 21:28

Albinonio - adagio in g minor

My all time most favourite piece of music.

Chopin's Nocturne no. 2 in E-Flat major is my go to chill out tune

Tanith · 20/05/2019 22:02

I heard a modern choral piece fairly recently: Stars by Ēriks Ešenvalds. He's a Latvian composer and it was so beautiful!

Iwantedtrianglesnotsquares · 20/05/2019 22:20

Corelli ‘Christmas concerto.’ It’s perfection.

Bwekfusth · 20/05/2019 22:23

Lark ascending, it's gorgeous.

Hidingtonothing · 20/05/2019 22:28

Classical isn't really my thing but I love Vivaldi's Four Seasons, it's literally a journey through every emotion I've ever felt in musical form. Also anything by Ludovico Einaudi and the soundtrack to The Piano.

grincheux · 20/05/2019 22:33

Clair de Lune by Debussy, I Giorni by Ludovico Einaudi (actually anything from him is pretty awesome), The Aquarium by Saint Saens, River Flows In You by Yiruma, and if you're looking on Spotify try a pianist called Stephen Bear, he does beautiful arrangements of soundtrack pieces.

EleanorLavish · 20/05/2019 22:40

I love classical music, so going to sift through all these pages and get some ideas.
But may I suggest movie soundtracks too? Such beautiful music.
Dances with Wolves soundtrack is so beautiful.
And my favourite piece ever is Flying from ET. I soar, feel exhilarated, and cry. It’s just so emotionally fabulous!

chocolatebrazilnut · 20/05/2019 22:42

Anything by Ola Gjeilo, although I particularly recommend The Lake Isle, The Rose, and his piano music (especially the Stone Rose CD).

The Seal Lullaby by Eric Whitacre.

Barber’s Adagio for Strings

5 Variants of Dives and Lazarus by Vaughan Williams

Duruflé’s Requiem and his 4 motets

Bruckner: Os Justi

chocolatebrazilnut · 20/05/2019 22:45

And Ravel Pavanne pour une infante defunte

chocolatebrazilnut · 20/05/2019 22:48

And the slow movement of Rachmaninov’s Symphony No 2.

Plus Vaughan Williams: Lord, thou hast been our refuge

The first movement of Aaron Copland’s Clarinet Concerto

onemorecakeplease · 20/05/2019 22:57

Oh it's the dances with wolves tune. Erm what's it called? The john Dunbar theme

Love it!

Pepperama · 20/05/2019 22:58

When I had a hard time as a young woman, I loved to listen to the slow movements of Tchaikovsky symphonies 5 and 6, and Beethoven symphony 7. Also Mahler’s 5th. And Dvorak’s World symphony too

Unescorted · 20/05/2019 22:59

Rodrigo - guitar concerto a close second.
