I want to put together a playlist for my DD as she has a horrendously difficult time ahead of her (you can search my username to see why) I am hoping it will help her in some way...calm her. Take her mind off things.

A few more for your dd, OP Flowers.

. I remember playing this with my sisters. I adore it.
Poshjock · 19/05/2019 23:48

Now this might not be to everyone’s taste but this is what I played at my wedding. It’s brass band and bagpipes and not dissimilar to Highland Cathedral... Mist Covered Mountain.

I was delighted to see Didos Lament which is a gorgeous piece which puts me in mind of this

Flower of the Forest. Played each year at the Cenotaph along with Londonderry Air and Nimrod. All songs of remembrance and all bring tears to my eyes.

Spiegel Im Spiegel. By Arvo Part

Crossing the Bark by the Spooky Men’s Chorale (folk rather than classical, but should have the right feel): m.youtube.com/watch?v=SFeYhScbZto

HeronLanyon · 19/05/2019 23:51

Well . . You did say it was the most beautiful ever ! Grin

Hotterthanahotthing · 19/05/2019 23:55

I love Mozart's Requiem.My DD doesn't.
She started with the Four Seasons and the Planets. She likes the music from The Piano.
I
I suggested she listened on YouTube because it has lists of music by the same composers.
She also likes the studio Ghibli sound tracks.

Canadeeio · 20/05/2019 00:18

David’s Air from Handel’s Saul is exquisite.

spongedog · 20/05/2019 00:21

Pretty much anything by Handel.

I also love Pachelbel's Canon
New World Symphony by Dvorack

Canadeeio · 20/05/2019 00:22

As is this - Sonderho Bridal Trilogy, traditional danish folk music.

Jeezypeepers · 20/05/2019 00:22

I had to search your username too...not sure why Mumsnet Classical Favourites isn’t bringing anything up? 🤔. Well done though OP, this is lovely!!

justilou1 · 20/05/2019 00:25

Mozart Concerto for Flute & Harp is divine. Kids love it.
Faure Cello Concertos (Anything cello!)
Elgar Enigma Variations
The Magic Flute Queen of the Night Arias
Kiri Te Kanawa singing the Rachmaninov Vocalise

PuppetShowInTheSoundofMusic · 20/05/2019 00:27

Karl Jenkins - Palladio 1st Movement (Diamond Music)

This was used in the De Beers diamond advert many years ago - but don't let that put you off! It's absolutely beautiful and inspiring.

heartknot · 20/05/2019 00:28

Another for Bruch violin concerto, it is sooooo beautiful.
Some other favorites
Elgar - cello concerto and Chanson de matin
Dvorak cello concerto
Mendelssohn violin concerto
Any Mozart...particularly the Requiem, flute and harp concerto is more uplifting though
Faure Requiem and Cantique de Jean Racine
Lots of others already mentioned

CustardySergeant · 20/05/2019 00:29

Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis by Vaughan Williams yet I never listen to it as it makes me feel incredibly miserable.

I do realise that makes no sense.

TheMaestro · 20/05/2019 00:51

As you said "beautiful" and mentioned "calm" I'll keep my suggestions to the calmer sections. If you want uplifting and thrilling I can do more!

1st Symphony is lovely, the 2nd movement is breath taking.

I'm also a fan of by Kodály.

by Sibelius.

Also .

For shorter pieces, Passacaglia - Death of Falstaff from Henry V is just achingly beautiful.

from Falla's 7 Popular Spanish Songs.

Or his a Debussy (I prefer the original orchestral version, but there's a guitar version too).

2 Elegaic Melodies

And I particularly like the of Scriabin's 1st Symphony.

Arvo Pärt has already been mentioned, but I would recommend his

The first movement of his may have a less relaxing feel, but the second movement is tres relaxing.

For choral stuff there's loads of gorgeous music from the Renaissance;

For example Taverner's or Victoria's

Somewhat later, Bruckner's is stunning, particularly the opening Kyrie. I also love his (Pange Lingua is a particular favourite of mine).

And just as an extra, from Peri's opera Euridice.

tothesea · 20/05/2019 00:55

Satie: Gnossiennes No. 1 is heart breakingly beautiful.
I will definitely be listening to the Spotify playlist I need more beautiful music in my life. Best wishes to the OP.

Silvercatowner · 20/05/2019 01:00

Another vote for Pachalbel. So beautiful.

Jasmin82 · 20/05/2019 01:13

This was one of my Mum's favourites.

tabardtherapist · 20/05/2019 01:31

Barber's Adagio for Strings.

taxiforme · 20/05/2019 02:16

Serenade for winds in b flat major k361 3rd movement- Mozart

If you have seen Amadeus- it's the piece which convinced Salieri that Mozart was a genius

Myworstnightmare123 · 20/05/2019 02:51

@Redbed That's fantastic.
Thank you all so much for your suggestions.
With all the horror and sadness in the world it is easy to forget there is so much talent and beauty in what humans can do. Some of these are exquisite.

Richard Wagner, Tristan and Isolde, Liebestod. One of the most beautiful pieces I’ve heard!

whitefish8 · 20/05/2019 05:35

David Fray & the Toulouse Orchestre others playing 2,3 and four piano Bach Concertos. Masterpieces.

Readytogogogo · 20/05/2019 05:46

I first sang Faure's Require with my school choir and remember thinking that 'Sanctus' was the most beautiful piece of music I'd ever heard. I still listen to it regularly.

Lovely thread Smile

Readytogogogo · 20/05/2019 05:47
