It’s reached 31 degrees C near the Arctic circle.

Forget about air pollution damaging every organ in our bodies (www.theguardian.com/environment/ng-interactive/2019/may/17/air-pollution-may-be-damaging-every-organ-and-cell-in-the-body-finds-global-review?fbclid=IwAR29fReysMmT_M2f_ix6pfFzIPZqncIDSUTR-WB3Sme8wMKzqXwE8WYALMs), our topsoils being so eroded and polluted that our children would see the end of good harvests (fi.intms.nl/fi_43a1c02c/files/downloads/201808-jeremy-grantham---the-race-of-our-lives-revisited.pdf) or over a million species in the process of going extinct (www.google.be/amp/s/www.vox.com/platform/amp/science-and-health/2019/5/7/18531171/1-million-species-extinction-ipbes-un-biodiversity-crisis).

It seems all of the above are actually optimistic as they assume life will still continue! (arctic-news.blogspot.com/2019/02/a-rise-of-18c-or-324f-by-2026.html?m=1)

Meanwhile people are busy booking holiday flights...

Sorry that it didn’t work the first time. Am on the phone so it was not obvious while typing.

I am scared too. And yes, the flight booking (though industry as well of course) and the mass meat eating.

And regarding the flights - I don’t fly and haven’t for almost 17 years now. I don’t go anywhere very far, and to places like Italy I go by train. The amount of times my worried about the environment sister has told me to get over my fear and fly is astonishing. Yet she genuinely loses sleep over the environment.

My DH is writing for an agency whose main client is a global organisation which has endless money to pump out green propaganda. When he research’s a the topic it almost invariably turns out to be based on flimsy or nonexistent evidence. Often they ask for actual lies to be disseminated.

This faith based propaganda is sent round an echo chamber of universities, media outlets like the BBC and Guardian, social media sites, public institutional bodies and national and international government. Businesses jump on the bandwagon for financial reasons.

There are very few voices which have a platform to counter the -sometimes - sheer Chicken Licken nonsense which is causing people to panic.

There is no need to panic about environmental issues except insofar as other less developed countries and continents have not got on board with even the smallest efforts to stop polluting the planet. And there is very little we can do about changing intransigent attitudes. Wearing a hair shirt oneself has never persuaded others to join in with the discomfort and pain.

The greater threat to humanity is in the authoritarian mindset and practices of the green movement which has become the new Puritanism. Its propaganda, lies and enforcing agenda are something we really need to fear.

Teacher22 · 19/05/2019 06:20

Sorry, should be ‘ researches a topic’. Predictive text, Doh!

Ivegotthree · 19/05/2019 07:21

How interesting teacher22 I well believe those media outlets you mention pump the info out.

Oh, FFS. Climate change deniers are a piece of work.
from NASA all made up?
WWF those well-known lying fuckers...
Royal Society biased echo chamber...
United Nations hair-shirt wearing, duplicitous wankers...
No need to worry about what any of these say, because Teacher22's husband says it's all just a bandwagon that whiney people are jumping on for some obscure reason.

Peregrane · 19/05/2019 07:55

Teacher22, thank you for your input.

Here’s the thing. I’ll take what you say about your DH’s work at face value. Believe me that I would love for climate disaster and omnicide to be a hoax. But: we have the capacity to assess available evidence. I am not a climate scientist and I cannot assess the raw data firsthand. However, I do possess logic and a capacity to evaluate how arguments and evidence are presented.

If your DH’s agency is pumping out lies on “green” topics, that does not mean that everything published - by others - about “green topics” is a lie. One can conceive of lies being published on any topic - and indeed there are many lies pushed by climate change denialists, the fossil fuel lobby etc - but that doesn’t mean there are no facts in this world. Or ways to tell truth from lie.

Over thirty years ago the idea was floated that we should refreeze the polar regions last week on the news I saw someone on there that said they were looking into this as a real idea within the next ten years if it was a new oil field it would be done by now

Peregrane · 19/05/2019 09:43

There are lots of geo-engineering ideas. Usually pushed by economists, who gravitate towards cheap solutions without changing the fundamentals of our economies, and physicists who tend to work with controlled environments. Geologists are deeply sceptical, not because they are technophobes, but because they know more about Earth systems, knock-on effects and unintended consequences in this context than others. (Anyone interested in this might consider reading Timefulness by Bjornerud, an enthralling and solid book.)

This is not to say that we don’t need technological solutions, but thinking that technology will fix it while business goes on as usual is a fairytale. A suicidal one, at that.
