to feel disgusted with myself :(

I've been vegetarian for 10 years. Partly for moral reasons, partly because I don't like the thought of eating meat - the thought always made me feel nauseous. But it's a personal choice, I don't judge others for what they chose to eat.

I went to an East Asian restaurant, and ordered a vegetarian dish. The dishes were not in English. The dishes arrived, and the waiter gave me what I thought was mine. It looked like it was, lots of vegetables etc.

I ate quite a bit of it, until I realised there was meat in it - it were prawns underneath the vegetables. I realised they had given me the wrong one. The worst thing is I'm pretty sure I ate chicken, as the veggie dish was supposed to have tofu in it, and I thought that's what it was. I don't remember what meat tastes like.

I feel awful - the worst thing is, someone at the dinner party made a huge deal about it and brought it to everyone's attention.

I've barely been able to eat since, and I feel a fraud to call myself a vegetarian. Some of the vegetarians at the table definitely judge me for not realising, saying 'I would have definitely realised if it were me'. I want to cleanse my whole body somehow, I tried to make myself vomit but failed.

I feel stupid and disgusted with myself for not realising.

As a vegetarian, you still consume animal products if not necessarily by eating creatures that have been killed. If you were a vegan, I could understand your disgust

Was going to say the same. I am vegetarian for ethical reasons, I mainly eat vegan but I’m not strict enough to label myself such. As vegetarians, OP, you and I have no more moral high ground than those who eat meat as we still buy into the shockingly cruel dairy and egg industry, which are equally as abhorrent as the meat industry.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 19/05/2019 15:06

See this is why I detest the militant strata of vegetarianism and vegan eating because it ends up with people feeling like this. The bullshit that the twatty militants feed into other people's heads that you aren't a "real" vegan / vegetarian if you eat like this is toxic and vile.

There is always some moron that has so little self esteem that they can only define themselves by what others put into their body ....like it sounds the person at the dinner party did.

OP I admit I don't understand your level of reaction to this but I do recognise it's important to you please don't let idiots get in your head that you aren't a real vegetarian

You make healthy choices and this one was entirely accidental try to move past it you didn't do it on purpose time to move on

I understand why you were upset.

I don’t understand why you went out to dinner with such horrible people. They really don’t sound very nice.

Complainingagain · 20/05/2019 13:51

YABU and precious. There are people bloody starving in the world, be grateful that you have food to eat 🙄

MysweetAudrina · 20/05/2019 13:57

I'm pretty sure the animal was dead at that stage so it's not like you killed it. get over it, you will have to, it was a mistake, no big deal. Talk about overacting to something.

M3lon · 20/05/2019 13:58

Don't let random mistakes (or idiot friends) tell you who you are.

The important thing is the decisions you make...you chose a vegetarian dish...you acted as your conscience directed. Everything after that was simply a mistake - and not even a mistake on your part.

Its worth noting that beating yourself up so heavily over something most people do everyday is likely to make those people react badly toward you. If you are finding yourself morally reprehensible for doing once, by mistake, what they do everyday then what can you think of them?

I'm not saying you do judge them as harshly - but they would not be being unreasonable to think you must think they are shit if you react this way to accidentally eating meat.

People make mistakes! It is human to err. Don't let it ruin your day/week/life.

EnoughLifeLessons · 20/05/2019 13:58

What a ridiculous overreaction. You seem to have a very twisted relationship with food which I suggest you address. And you should be angry with the restaurant for being shits.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 20/05/2019 14:03

I'm sorry. I don't get why you posted in AIBU though because you'll get lots of twats people who don't understand and who think that jokes like 'If God didn't want us to eat animals he wouldn't 'have made them out of meat' haw, haw, haw are funny.
