Younique and facebook

Paddington68 · 18/05/2019 09:08

One fo my friends has recently started selling this stuff - Younique make-up.
On Facebook she has become this embodiment of positivity, lots of quotes, lots of photos. Then she does these videos about the product and her happy, happy life.
I know that in real life she doesn't have a happy, happy life and we (she and I) have talked previously about how other people's happy, happy, facebook can be damaging to mental health or hide mental health issues.
AIBU to think younique is like a cult and tell her to stop the pretending?

In a post just now from a rep from this company.

You may just see a mascara but I see-

  1. Family holidays
  2. Time with family
  3. Treats for kids
  4. Nails/hair/pamper time for me
  5. Meals out with husband
  6. Mortgage payment
  7. Supermarket shop
  8. Emergency fund
  9. Fun days out
10. Savings account 11. No set work hours, flexibility 12. Shoes/clothes/handbags

If you're ready to say yes, come and see me so we can talk. #sayyes #business #income #achieveyourdreams

EmeraldRubyShark · 20/05/2019 13:11

You see mascara, I see:

Alienating friends and family
Friends avoiding you and no longer inviting you out because they’re sick of being sold to
Seeing family members as customers or walking dollar signs
Credit card debt
Being unable to get a mortgage
Divorce because of financial strain
Disconnection from your kids cos when you’re with them you’re glued to your phone
Fake superficial ‘friendships’ with ‘y sisters’ who’ll cut you out as soon as you wise up and quit
Being treated like a child
Being on the hook for an expensive lease car
Lying to your friends on social media
Lying to friends to get them to sign up
Emotionally manipulating people into buying from you
Pretending your substandard terrible makeup is even half the quality of Collection or Rimmel
Degrading yourself posting those awful open mouthed shooting upwards photos of your stubby lashes
Being blocked by half the people you harass via messenger
Losing the respect of everyone who loves you
Lying awake at night worrying about money
Being told if you’re not succeeding it’s because you’re not thinking positively enough

I've always found it really weird that they just list a load of things you can buy with money instead of saying Earn loads of cash etc... We all understand how money works, you don't need to explain that you can shop at the supermarket with it!

Mayvis · 20/05/2019 13:38

@BAB0484 -

You said..."I don't keep stock, all orders are done via my website and if someone (I've had 1 as lipstick colour didn't suit) returns a product, they are refunded... simple as. I have already been paid for that sale so don't lose out."

So you get to keep your percentage from the sale of the product, even when that product is then returned? Confused

Surely if that were true, presenters could buy stock, get paid and then return it all for a refund whilst still earning their commission.

I very much doubt that Younique themselves are paying out commission on sold stock that is then returned and refunded.

CurlsandCurves · 20/05/2019 14:21

@BAB0484.

One of your last posts was telling us all how you’re dealing with orders from Australia, presumably to show us that you really can make money while you sleep.

Younique has a presence in Australia. Why on earth would someone not just find an Aussie Younique rep? Instead they are ordering from you, getting the same product that they can get hold of in Oz posted from the uk that can take weeks to arrive..

Ooh, ooh I know....because it’s another fib! Or maybe they just love the personal customer service you provide. 😆

FunnyHappyGirl · 20/05/2019 14:53

I'm amazed that so many women get conned in to this. I have an old school friend on fb that I added years ago. Never saw anything on her facebook until suddenly loads of makeup plugs, videos, #livingmybestlife crap appeared. The only person that ever commented on them was her mum who was obviously trying to be supportive and buying things from her.

I haven't seen any Younique posts for a while so she's obviously given that up. But she now has three other new MLM-style "businesses" listed. These thankfully don't involve MLM-bombing her facebook timeline.

I do wonder what she thinks now when she sees her posts come up on her Timehop/Memories pages.

@Mayvis
Incentive trips: You get the accommodation paid for. You need to make your own way there. Much like the vaunted Younique Foundation retreat in Utah. You apply, get accepted but have to fund the travel yourself.
Other trips vary. The Spain thing (probably a Spanish Empower You for Spanish presenters) is not something you have to attend if it's in another country. But you'd be encouraged to attend the one in the UK if you're a UK presenter. Same as conference. Pay £200 for your tickets (or whatever it is), then you have to sort out accommodation and travel there. Plus you'll be expected to buy conference exclusive goodies to put money in Derek and Melanies pockets show your commitment to Younique. I never went to conference as the 3 years I was in Younique, while I could have justified paying for the ticket, I couldn't justify the cost of flights to the US (only ever took place there) for such a short period of time and my illness meant I would have gone downhill faster if I'd attended. Also at conference, your upline/team leader will put on activities that you're expected to participate in and pay for, and you'll be expected to at least attend a meal with them somewhere (and pay for that meal).
There was an incentive trip/retreat to Colombia that coincided with the launch of the new mascara. Guess what all those who attended were expected to do on launch day? You got it: Sell, sell, sell, and then post pictures of themselves at the pool an brag about how many mascaras had been sold in x hours ad they were so blessed.
There are some trips that are invited presenters only. Some of these are run by the very top bots an accommodation is funded by them. They set a challenge and if you do well enough, you get to pay to go to the US/wherever they decide to listen to them tell you how to brainwash people successfully into parting with their money or joining succeed even more.

EmeraldRubyShark · 20/05/2019 15:43

So you get to keep your percentage from the sale of the product, even when that product is then returned? confused

Yeah it’s a total lie. Reading Elle Beau’s blog she writes about how devastated she was when a relative she’d convinced to buy two of the mascaras wanted to return them. She was upset because she’d paid for posting and would now have to pay for the return and lose out on the commission. It’s just total fabrication.

9.3 at the link (and they say they ‘may’ take commission back: they certainly always do)

allergyhelpnewbaby · 20/05/2019 15:52

BAB0484 to earn £1000 a month you must be selling £3500 of make up a month. That one client who sends £200 a month is not going to cut it.

Kaykay06 · 20/05/2019 16:06

A girl from work started selling this online, fb etc and does these video clips pics etc and honest to god I wouldn’t buy a single item as it all looks horrific. She can’t apply make up and how she sells anything is beyond me, totally cringe. The price is also ridiculous, And the go girl, power sales women shit is also awful. You just wonder how supposedly intelligent women can’t see through it.

Pinkyponkcustard · 20/05/2019 16:13

I don’t get that “when your office looks like this” meme where the toddlers legs are in the middle of the woman’s legs and all the “stay at home with your kids ALL the time - whoop!” bollocks.

I adore my ds but I would hate to have to work at home all the time and have him there whilst I was trying to work. Surely part of the attraction in any job is the hot coffee and adult interaction?

EmeraldRubyShark · 20/05/2019 16:15

This subreddit will open the eyes of anyone else who is deluded about younique www.reddit.com/r/Youniqueamua/

It’s so bloody awful, encouraging grown women who haven’t a clue about makeup to apply it any old way and then share images of themselves online as if they’re some kind of makeup authority or makeup artist when in reality sadly the majority look awful (a mix of bad tools/shit makeup and no skill, yet seeing themselves as knowledgeable enough to advise others on it!). It can be a bit nasty at times on the sub but they do try to keep to highlighting how ridiculous younique and its presenters are rather than picking on women for things out of their hands if that makes sense. And these people are putting themselves out there as people to go to for guidance and advice on makeup.

ToeSocks · 20/05/2019 16:44

What does mlm mean Blush

Mayvis · 20/05/2019 17:04

@Jasmin82 -

Thanks for all that. I did wonder how it was on earth possible to sell enough make up to get paid and then earn an all expenses (lies) trip to Mexico for 2 people.

The most telling sign is the complete lack of comments on any FB sales post. It is such a public humiliation.

Multi Level Marketing

crispysausagerolls · 20/05/2019 18:42

An acquaintance of mine posted something about a detox on Instagram and I liked it (not understanding it was Arbonne and arbonne is an MLM) and she immediately messaged me like heyyyy my lovely how are you? Need to meet DS soon - I’m doing this very exciting thing are you working now?

I was like I’m now a SAHM and will be indefinitely probably. This was completely ignored as she replied excellent let me know let’s discuss you sound keen!

It always reminds me of the pyramid scheme episode of peep show!

nc100 · 20/05/2019 18:52

Don't think BAB is going to answer these questions but....

How many people have you recruited?

How many events have you been to? They hold them every week, the cheapest ticket is £10 but the average is at least 4 times that.

It's not about selling make up, it's about recruiting! Wake up!!!!

robinsarebins · 20/05/2019 19:55

There is a woman on the podcast, the dream, that sacked off her best friends wedding to go to the yearly conference. How is that not brainwashed.
The podcast is really good, they set one of their team up as a rep and get her to try to make money and she goes to one of the conferences, training day things, some of the stories there are heartbreaking, and the training is just gobbledygook and not training at all.
Someone I know used to sell the one with the whitening toothpaste that's got banana skin extract or some shit in it. Does look like it works but at £20 a tube im stuck with my natural teeth.

InspectorClouseauMNdivision · 20/05/2019 20:10

I am tempted to go and like some mlm insta posts so even I can bask in weird messages trying to recruit meGrin

Tink88 · 20/05/2019 21:24

Someone I used to work with left s well paid job to set up with Nu skin without ever selling a product. I know nothing about the company or products but she constantly posts on Facebook, typical inspirational quotes.

BusterGonad · 21/05/2019 03:25

I've been looking at the American Younique sellers and they are crazy, thanking good and Jesus for their wonderful life whilst ramming Younique products down people's throats. One women in particular looks like an Instagram goddess and wears the oatmeal shade cardigans and has the insta poses down to a fine art form. Everything is so fake and her life looks amazing! I can see how people want to buy a bit of that and it's sad how the venerable ones get sucked in. She's literally the perfect sales woman. On one of her posts some guy has commented about 20 times just saying Fake. Lair etc. ha ha. She didn't respond!

Misspelling of several words including hijacked, spurious apostrophes all over the place, not to mention appalling misappropriation of punctuation.

Your job in education is about as real as your profits from MLM.

MaybeDoctor · 22/05/2019 13:38

It's a bit like the prosperity gospel isn't it?

MaybeDoctor · 22/05/2019 13:55

I have read the Elle Beau blog about Younique. I am watching the BBC documentary right now.
It is all so lacking in genuine values.

The waste.
The unnecessary products.
All the godforsaken waste packaging generated by every single order.
The constant focus on the scheme to the neglect of anything else - who wants that to be the only thing across their social media?

Like everyone else I am a consumer. I wear a little bit of makeup. But I buy a small amount in my own time, spending my money when I am ready to do so. This circus of hard-pressure selling is appalling.
