Younique and facebook

Paddington68 · 18/05/2019 09:08

One fo my friends has recently started selling this stuff - Younique make-up.
On Facebook she has become this embodiment of positivity, lots of quotes, lots of photos. Then she does these videos about the product and her happy, happy life.
I know that in real life she doesn't have a happy, happy life and we (she and I) have talked previously about how other people's happy, happy, facebook can be damaging to mental health or hide mental health issues.
AIBU to think younique is like a cult and tell her to stop the pretending?

The last Y-bot I blocked used to post videos of herself blubbering, crying apparently happy tears because her 'customers were so nice'. It was truly embarrassing.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 19/05/2019 20:22

Some of those MLM always encourage people to get into debt. Like getting fancy cars on finance or booking a swanky holiday on a credit card. Just to fake success..

flobella · 19/05/2019 20:25

Yes Tropic is an MLM. Again, a real shame as the products are good but now I know I won’t buy anything else from them.

MissMoan · 19/05/2019 20:29

It is truly awful how they target the vulnerable. It's easy to see how so many people are drawn into it. Jasmin82 and everyone who has been affected, sorry you had to go through that, and thank you for sharing your stories. I watched the documentary and it was gripping.

If you divide the cost of a luxury holiday and a white Mercedes by the cost of a mascara ... that's a lot of mascara to sell. Doesn't take rocket science to see you're not going to make your millions from selling to F&F or F&F of F&F.

It used to be a white Range Rover, they've obviously gone upmarket Hmm

@Jasmin82 - thanks for explaining.

I think I am going to look up the documentary - really interesting to me! I do think a couple of Facebook friends might have been caught up in these schemes, but I just ignored the invitations to buy and they never pursued it! I think one of those was Younique, actually. The other was some health product.

It's all quite far removed from my world!

donquixotedelamancha · 19/05/2019 20:45

Oh wow... I've been a Younique Presenter for almost 2 years now and I can assure you I make a really good income. The 'reporter' for the BBC was herself a presenter, as well as a few other network marketing plans... The whole documentary was so badly edited... I know as I was at some of those events!! It was biased...i suspect for her own reasons. Nobody makes you buy anything.. It's a choice! The mascara is £19...if you are charged £30 then that is wrong. We are no different to the make-up ladies in Boots, Harrods, Self ridges etc all who make commission by selling make-up to you... What's the difference? Younique does not prey on young mothers... A lot of my friends are working ladies that also do this, some are retired and some are stay at home Mum's. We all have a choice! What is the difference between Younique and Avon...or any other online seller... Regardless of the product???

Oh wow, i really......think this poster is a parody!!! Otherwise how terrifying is....it that they have a drone sign up to MN (welcome BAB) and post....about how the mean old BBC are out to get...... Younique???

Flimsy attacks on critics- check.
Forced conversational tone - check.
Very weird use's of......punctuation- check!!!???
Claims that they make a fortune from selling the crap- check.

I (sorry, i) call bingo.

We're almost at a full house. We just need some huns, reference to people being negative and lots of heart emojis.

Jasmin82 · 19/05/2019 21:17

LolaSmiles If in a few posts time, you're still waiting and the rules allow, this ex-bot will oblige. and then go into hiding for a year in shame.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 19/05/2019 21:23

At one point I had 3 friends on FB that sold Younique. One posted semi-frequently for about 6 months and then nothing so I assume she went "inactive" or whatever they call it. Another announced she was stopping and selling some health shit, followed a few months later by some house shit and then a few months later announced she was done with it all because it had cost her a fortune. The third still sells it and, seemingly, does quite well out of it. Truthfully, though, who knows?

PinkGlitter123 · 19/05/2019 22:17

The one I know posts everyday about how blessed she is and how fortunate she is that she earns a full-time wage and can be at home with her kids all day. Posts everyday encouraging people to sign up saying they can have the luxury holidays and cars and quit their jobs if they just took a leap of faith and signed up. Genuinely she seems to do well out of it, very well. But I know many who haven't and its wrong to mislead women into thinking the company will solve all their problems and have the luxuries that she does.

popehilarious · 19/05/2019 23:29

So many ppl on here saying they know one person who really seems to be doing well with it. Only something like 1% (it's in the documentary) earn the equivalent of minimum full-time wage from younique, so it's really really unlikely. It is simply lies.

Popcorntwice · 19/05/2019 23:40

I know a couple, with kids, who work for a MLM and they seem to be doing really well; both have the cars that the company offers as an incentive and neither of them have other jobs so they must be earning at least enough to pay bills etc. They have recruited a huge team so that's probably why they've done ok from it all.

Other than that I don't know anyone who's made any money from MLMs. Quite a few people on my FB friends sell juice plus but none are too much of a bot.

MissLadyM · 19/05/2019 23:48

The documentary on mlms was heartbreaking. It's a horrible, exploitative world.

flopsyandflim · 20/05/2019 00:44

Body shop website regularly seems to have deals on and 30% off type things, I just don’t see why you’d order from a rep.

Ditto Usborne books. I’ve seen reps share some really lovely books they’ve got for sale but a quick google nearly always finds me the same product two quid cheaper on Amazon with free next day delivery.

Ifigotherewillbedouble · 20/05/2019 00:59

I’ve been with the same MLM for over 6 years - like BAB I do want to give the other side of the story, or my story for what it’s worth. I earn commission, I’m self employed so no holiday pay or minimum wage. My monthly commission is set at 25% of the retail value of the products sold. Then there are bonus commissions on top of that if you have a team or sell more than a certain amount. I can actually set my own prices, I did choose my own business name and I am registered for self assessment. I don’t actively recruit but people do want to try it for themselves. I make monthly subscription type boxes for regular customers and this forms the basis for most of my sales. I earn more per month now than I did in the beginning but I have to be proactive and ask for reviews and referral from my customers. I aim to sell £1300 worth of products every month but don’t always hit that target, but it’s my monthly goal. A huge part of my business is fundraising though so a lot of that will be donated. If anyone knows my story I started with the company to raise funds for my son who has since passed away - and after a break I went back to it and use it to raise funds for others. I genuinely earned a totally free trip to Cancun and an all expenses paid cruise. I’ve also earned trips to California but paid for flights to take my children - my company were offering deals on Disney passes so I took full advantage. Anyway, my point is you definitely don’t need to scam anyone to do well with a Direct Sales/MLM company - and Avon is an MLM too, tried it when I was fundraising but couldn’t sell enough to raise what we needed. I think it’s great people have their eyes wide open and can see where pit falls can be. I’ve met a great bunch of ladies through my company and I see it more like a club than a cult lol but that’s just semantics.

TurnTheFreakingFrogsGay · 20/05/2019 02:47

@Ifigotherewillbedouble

I don't know your story and I'm sorry you lost your child Thanks

You don't say which mlm you are part of but sound very very much like an acquaintance who joined scentsy last year.
She posts a lot about travelling to Disney thank to her business and posts pictures of her kids with the Disney Buddies things they do, she does subscription boxes and mix ups of wax melt things that she's always offering to hand deliver for free postage (her main job is delivery driver) and also calls her business a club.

She doesn't call her "business" scentsy, and her group name is something like sweet smells, she doesn't visibly recruit either but what I have noticed is she will post the start up pack often saying you get a shitload of stuff for the cost of one burner and every now and then she will add extra items from her personal stock to add value and for people to "try the range" for next to nothing and then if they live it they can get staff discount too, so when people think of paying £60 for a burner she will say "ohhhh it's a lush burner, I'm running a promo at the minute where for a little bit more you can get all this shit plus the burner" and she's basically just recruiting people and they don't realise because they think they've got a bargain.

I don't know if you're with scentsy but your posts remind me very very much of the one I know.

Which mlm are you rep for and would you say your earnings are the level the majority of other reps earn in the same scheme? Or would you be one to few percent earning large sums? It's why I'm asking which mlm you work for so I ca check statement of earnings for myself?

TooManyPaws · 20/05/2019 03:32

It's got such a bad name now that even Hawaii 50 had a story about a dodgy cosmetic MLM (top seller got murdered but I don't suppose that happens a lot).

Someone at my work does Partylite on the side and she seems to do reasonably well at it without having people below her. She also does better deals than the website often, sells off display items, and runs competitions - I won £100 worth Christmas before last. I've never had a party for her, just ordered from catalogue through her or from her offers. Obviously not her main job though, she's not daft enough to jack that in.

pantsville · 20/05/2019 04:02

I'm still waiting for the explanation as to how you could host a party selling items but hold no stock. How do you do that then? Just describe them? Show the guests pictures on your phone?

DontWannaBeObamasElf · 20/05/2019 05:37

Pantsville When you host a “party” the sales earn you “y-cash” which is money you can only spend on the website. A lot of presenters use the y-cash to buy items for their “kit” (as far as I know you still don’t earn commission from this). BAB will have done this and will take the kit to parties. People will try them there and order through her. This earns the host more y-cash to spend.

BusterGonad · 20/05/2019 05:55

I embarrassingly used to stick up for MLMs but have seen the light, I held a Virgin V party once and I loved it, all my friends came over and spent a routine and I had loads of free goodies, the lady that ran it then went in to sell a different brand and cane over and recruited me, it was terrible, I paid about £60 for the set, wasn't told I'd have to pay another £25 but that got dropped as I complained.
You can't really make a living from it unless your a sales person that is totally fake and snakey. I can't sit in someone's house and blatantly lie to them about a product. Drink tea from their mugs and meet their children whilst ripping them off. The thing is you can't really work the hours you choose when you have kids because all the parties are Friday and Saturday nights. I never made a bean. I realize now it wasn't me being a shit sales person, I was taken advantage off when I was at my most venerable with a young child and a new house I could hardly afford!

BusterGonad · 20/05/2019 05:56

Sorry for the typos, I'm sure you get what I'm saying! Grin

BusterGonad · 20/05/2019 07:12

I've just been researching Younique and I'm having many LOLs over their anniversary palette! 😂

Lilsquish · 20/05/2019 07:48

I bought an item off fb marketplace (some second hand toddler shoes)

About a month later i got a message from the seller trying to recruit me to some fad selling crap!

i coudnt believe it. i responded something along the lines of

'sorry you must have messaged me in error. i dont know you, i just bought some second hand shoes from you'

she came back with 'i just thought you might like to earn easy money. no problem hun'

I couldn't have blocked her any quicker. Weirdo.
