To ask for gin advice?!

bumble270 · 17/05/2019 13:58

Never really drank gin myself, and I want to get a gift set of gins for a family members birthday. It will contain 3 medium bottles.

She likes Gordon's gin, if she likes that does anyone have any advice as to what other 'fancy' flavours she may like?

TIA

Link wont work, anyway you can get from asda and sainsbury's

PlainVanilla · 17/05/2019 14:15

If I am giving gin as a present I like The Botanist, Gin Mare or Monkey 47.
I am also partial to Ophir and Colombo.

Tigerlilly17 · 17/05/2019 14:17

Aldi do some amazing flavours, Seville orange and lime or blueberry and vanilla etc only £15-£20 a full sized bottle.

AmIAWeed · 17/05/2019 14:22

If she likes Gordons she's not a gin drinker!
I love Malfy grapefruit gin (as a cheap regular), and Monkey 47 (treat, does not last long!!!) as PlainVanilla recommended is fab but also buy her some decent tonic water so it isn't ruined.
Depending on budget though i'd be tempted with a tasting set from Master of Malt like: www.masterofmalt.com/tasting-set/drinks-by-the-dram/world-gin-awards-overall-winners-tasting-set/
But seriously, but some fever tree tonic water!

tisonlymeagain · 17/05/2019 14:24

Brockmans, Slingsby Rhubarb, Brooklyn, Aviator, Sipsmith...all favs

WatcherOfTheNight · 17/05/2019 14:24

The botanist & my all time favourite is Hendricks 😋

SushiTime · 17/05/2019 14:24

My MIL only drinks Gordon's gin with shit tonic. I've bought her loads of nice ones over the years and it's only me that drinks hen when I go round. Save your money, these Gordeners just don't appreciate a good gin! Gin

Blobby10 · 17/05/2019 14:24

Mass produced brands such as Gordons, Beefeater etc are produced in stainless steel stills which don't work with the minerals in the water and therefore the gin tastes more 'harsh'. If you pay more, the smaller distilleries use copper stills which is why they taste smoother. Of course, they are made in smaller batches so more expensive but thats the main difference! (can you tell I went on a Gin Making course last year Grin)

There are also different botanicals used - Ophir uses a more oriental blend whereas others are more citrus based! Then there are the fruity ones. Its all down to personal taste tbh.

Sexnotgender · 17/05/2019 14:25

I like Tanqueray Rangpur www.masterofmalt.com/gin/tanqueray-rangpur-gin/

Confusedbeetle · 17/05/2019 14:26

Rhubarb and ginger, a liquor gin

Corndog · 17/05/2019 14:27

Hendricks is my favourite

fairislecable · 17/05/2019 14:30

Tanqueray 10 or Cotswold Gin are best as the alcohol content is higher and carries the botanical flavours better.

Don’t bother with chemically added flavourings as fresh citrus slices are much nicer.

hihellohihey · 17/05/2019 14:31

Hendricks or Gin Mare for me!

SinglePringle · 17/05/2019 14:32

Sipsmith is a lovely gin. Decent tonic, golfball of ice and a slice. Delicious.

TheWernethWife · 17/05/2019 14:33

Tanqueray Sevilla gin is gorgeous. I freeze orange slices to use instead of ice cubes. I've got a selection of gins, Tanqueray Rangpur, Martin Miller, Sipsmiths Lemon Drizzle (used to be exclusive to M & S). Have also frozen lemon and lime slices.

Oct18mummy · 17/05/2019 14:35

Tinker gin, brockmans gin both delicious!

DoubleNegativePanda · 17/05/2019 14:36

I'd agree that if Gordon's is the favorite, nicer gins might not be appreciated. But if I was choosing three gins for a gift and I had access to local British gins, mine would go: Rock Rose, Hendricks, Slingsby.

I love gin so much.

Redglitter · 17/05/2019 14:37

Do her a favour & DONT buy her Gordon's. Buy her proper Gin.

I like Bloom or Tanquery

pocketcucco · 17/05/2019 14:40

Aber Falls Rhubarb and Ginger gin is lovely. Also Mombasa Strawberry!

SeamstressfromTreacleMineRoad · 17/05/2019 14:45

Hendricks or Plymouth gin - and definitely get some Fever Tree tonic Gin

Fatbutt · 17/05/2019 14:47

Mixers and a couple of Gins would be better than just Gin

Sipsmith, Hendricks, Bulldog and Neat gins are nice

Stokie Oatcake gin is nice, with a sweet vanilla taste, Orange marmalade gin but my all time fave, Rhubarb and Ginger gin with Ginger Ale!

BlackcurrantJamontoast · 17/05/2019 15:12

Gordons have a pink gin which is very popular

MummyStruggles · 17/05/2019 15:20

Bloom gin, Fever Tree mediterranean tonic, with fresh strawberries and fresh mint!!

It's my fave!

bumble270 · 17/05/2019 16:05

So I went for a local grapefruit gin with two tonics - aromatic fever tree and franklin & sons grapefruit tonic and a complimentary chocolate gift set, really hoping she likes it 🤞
