Game of Thrones - Shall I start watching now?!

ThatCurlyGirl · 17/05/2019 10:46

I've never watched GOT.

But have seen (Obvs) all the news about it and loved the scenes I have seen in passing on news sites etc.

Is it too late for me to start from the beginning now?

If everyone is disappointed in the ending am I just setting myself up for disappointment?

I'm still recovering from an accident and will be for a few months, so I have time on my hands... would be nice to have a distraction from being in pain.

I love love love Harry Potter, LOTR etc but read and watched them to death.

Any thoughts for a GOT newbie?!

Ps if reading is an issue at mo, worth trying audible? 30 day free trial...

ThatCurlyGirl · 17/05/2019 20:46

@eternalopt

No one seems to have warned you yet that there is quite a lot of that so be careful if it triggers. Quite a few rape scenes and some of the scenes where women are bossed around in the brothels could be triggering I think

Thanks so much for this warning I really appreciate it. I always think there should be a website for people like me who find such things triggering where you can get warnings about particular episodes, but probably sounds silly to people who don't get it. Thank you for understanding xx

I'm on episode 2 already and have just forwarded any bits so far that have been triggering, as they've been a few seconds each.

Audiobooks is a great shout - I still listen to Harry Potter ones when I'm poorly or have insomnia and I'm 32!

God I miss work it's hard trying when you're in pain all the time and have this seemingly unending expanse of time ahead of you. Bleurgh.

Spoiler - I knew Emilia Clarke when I was younger and she's absolutely lovely IRL.

Yes, Jaime changes dramatically in looks over the course of the series.

DannyWallace · 17/05/2019 20:49

Haha Op I'm the same.
Started a few days ago and just about to watch the last episode of season one!
I wasn't sure, but I'm addicted now!!

ThatCurlyGirl · 17/05/2019 20:49

Jaime makes me think of Summer Heights High Grin

HappyPunky · 17/05/2019 20:52

Jaime is fit.

There is a storyline in season 5 that you'll want to avoid.

Ohnotanothernamechange · 17/05/2019 20:55

The way they spell Jaime has always bugged me as well, as I'm sure that's the feminine version?

The best thing about GOT is that the women ARE the best characters. Other than Ned Stark the men are all a bit wet and pathetic next to the female characters. So many fabulous strong women, Daenerys (obviously), Catlynn, Maergery, Olenna, Brienne and yes Cersei even though she is a hateful.

Ohnotanothernamechange · 17/05/2019 20:58

Jaime is the best looking man in this show by far. But Ive had a crush on Jorah from the start, even if he is about 25 years older than me. His voice is like melted chocolate.

icantstopeatingg · 17/05/2019 21:00

Yes 🤗

JugzyMalone · 17/05/2019 21:02

@Ohnotanothernamechange yeah I was surprised and impressed by the strong women in it! Plus the girls as well, aria obviously , the sister I'm not that keen on, and that tiny Mormont girl. I thought GRRM was supposed to be a bit sexist / lechy?

welcometothejambie.tumblr.com/post/177434192210/got-rape-scenes-list-no-real-spoilers-just-my

Not sure if this link will work. But here's a list of triggering sex scenes with a timestamp for every episode. I have the same trigger as you, I hope it's helpful.

ThatCurlyGirl · 17/05/2019 21:20

@Ca55andraMortmain OH MY GOD that is amazing and so kind of you to link to it. Whoever made that is a truly lovely one.

Probably sounds silly to people who haven't had the same triggering experience but knowing when it's coming up and being able to choose to forward / mute means I can relax and enjoy the episode otherwise I'm on edge constantly.

I also still have to watch something between stuff like GOT and sleep time as a kind of buffer so my brain is in nice nice mode I don't have bad dreams. Frasier tonight I think :)

Thanks so much again xx

Don't bother! My ds2 is a big fan and so disappointed with season 8! Seems a lot of watching for not much in return.
I've never seen it.

ThatCurlyGirl · 18/05/2019 12:39

Just finished episode 4. Im definitely invested already thanks to the lovely PP who shared the link listing all the sexually violent scenes - you're a star.

Good job general guts and gore seems to have no effect on me, it's so bloody! Fine by me though.

Can't believe how many faces I recognise especially British ones. I love two of the girls who were previously in Hollyoaks so it's lovely to see them in something so huge globally.

Anyway, loving it so far. Though it's weird not hearing the Curb Your Enthusiasm intro after the HBO intro noise Grin

OMG just got a flashback to a house party in my ahem wilder days and Joffrey was there IRL.

Poor kid now I reckon he must have been surrounded by people who thought he looked like a slappable little cunt if they'd already started watching! Poor fella. The Malfoy of GOT.

Especially when people didn't realise it was him so just took an instant dislike without actually knowing why!

In fairness he seemed absolutely fine. Few beers on the sofa, left early before any substances were on offer. Classic Joffrey.

OP posts:
LaurieMarlow · 18/05/2019 14:45

I think he quit acting. Hopefully not because people were mean to him because of Joffrey Shock

LaurieMarlow · 18/05/2019 14:45

*Classic Joffrey.

Grin
ThatCurlyGirl · 18/05/2019 14:54

I'm hooked! Also by watching so far and knowing bits and bobs from through the years I've realised this is probably the best cast ever!!

Maisie Williams who I just love regardless of GOT

Sean Fucking Benn - amazing

Jerome off of Robson and Jerome

Bodyguard of the bodyguard

Beaut girl with enviable pour off hollyoaks

Another beaut girl off hollyoaks with the best hair ever

Fucking LOVEJOY

Girl married to a Jonas

Prince Charming off Shrek

Chris AND Cassie off Skins

Jason Momoa whose surname I legitimately thought was Moana until today

Lead guy in Queer as Folk

TONKS FROM HARRY POTTER

And Emilia and Joffrey from off of my real life

And there must be loads more as I watch more. Why didn't I watch this sooner? And why aren't I Arya? She's a fucking legend.

OP posts:
ThatCurlyGirl · 18/05/2019 14:55

It's a brilliant series, and I've been working on ploughing through the books since new year. I came into it late, between series 6 & 7. I thought it would be too violent and sexual for my tastes, but it works within the contexts and tends to be realistic rather than gratuitous like many of DH's shoot'em up films.

I've been trying to avoid spoilers for weeks until I get chance to catch up.

I enjoyed re-watching ready for series 7 because a lot of little gaps in who's connected to who and subtlties were missed first time round.

MabelMoo23 · 18/05/2019 15:36

I'm umming and ahhing about watching, but knowing the brutality and rape scenes is really really putting me off and I love a good binge sesh

ThatCurlyGirl · 18/05/2019 17:49

Season one DONE.

I'm hooked.

I used the site a PP shared to avoid sexually violent scenes as I really find them difficult.

By doing that I managed to absolutely LOVE it.

OP posts:
ILiveInSalemsLot · 18/05/2019 17:55

Wow op I’m impressed. I started a couple of weeks ago and haven’t finished season 1 yet. Wish I could get through them as my time is running out.

ThatCurlyGirl · 18/05/2019 18:31

@ILiveInSalemsLot it gets so good!

Not to be too poor me but I'm at the mercy of my seizures til my meds settle so some days I have bags of time! Work like mad normally so mumsnet and boxsets are a bit of a lifeline!

I've just thought I have absence seizures a fair bit too so will be interesting to see if I at some point miss a MASSIVE plot device Grin
