Game of Thrones - Shall I start watching now?!

ThatCurlyGirl · 17/05/2019 10:46

I've never watched GOT.

But have seen (Obvs) all the news about it and loved the scenes I have seen in passing on news sites etc.

Is it too late for me to start from the beginning now?

If everyone is disappointed in the ending am I just setting myself up for disappointment?

I'm still recovering from an accident and will be for a few months, so I have time on my hands... would be nice to have a distraction from being in pain.

I love love love Harry Potter, LOTR etc but read and watched them to death.

Any thoughts for a GOT newbie?!

^Harry Potter obv. Not talking furry animals!

DoneLikeAKipper · 17/05/2019 13:30

@FissionChips the ending hasn’t aired yet, and whilst what has leaked (which no one will share here) sounds bad, it may not be true. I’m not buying into the whole ‘this season has been shit’ thing, it’s been a bit rushed but definitely nothing that hasn’t been coming in the last 7 seasons.

@ThatCurlyGirl, the series is (on the whole) absolutely excellent and worth getting into. There is a couple of instances of serious sexual violence though.

frugalkitty · 17/05/2019 13:32

I resisted for years as it's not my usual thing at all....lasted year decided to see what all the fuss was about (DH has read the books and watched from the off) and have really enjoyed it!

hopelesslyromantic93 · 17/05/2019 13:34

Me and DP started watching it a few weeks ago and are on the last episode of season 6! We both tried numerous times to watch past the first episode but just couldn't get into it but stick with it it gets so much better!

Abra1de · 17/05/2019 13:35

Honestly, there are some GoT fans who wouldn’t have been happy with any ending.

This season has been rushed at times and I miss some of the lengthier Tyrion/Varys/Littlefinger exchanges from earlier seasons. But it still very much worth watching.

JugzyMalone · 17/05/2019 13:35

I've just watched all of it and am up to date. If you like LOTR and HP you will love it. It's really well made. Very little sexual violence, compared to the amount of maiming and killing.

whatashower · 17/05/2019 13:44

Have just binge watched the entire eight, courtesy of NowTV.
Very enjoyable. I would definitely recommend.

In fact, I would even recommend watching just for the opening animated sequences..... and for the soundtrack. 😀.

This whole season is the ending, and it’s shit. Why would the last episode be any better?

DoneLikeAKipper · 17/05/2019 14:28

@FissionChips, it’s not shit, it’s everything the show has been leading up to over several years. Anyone who thinks it’s shit hasn’t been paying attention. It’s a bit rushed, and it’s disappointing that a lot of things won’t be tied up (or covered from the book), but it’s not actually shit. We were never going to be given a definitive ending without the books being finished. If G R R Martin couldn’t be arsed finishing his story, well the writers can only do their best from what they already had.

Wishiwasincornwall · 17/05/2019 14:51

I binge watched series 1- midway through series 8 in 3 weeks. It's then been torture having to wait a week till the next episode for the last 3 episodes. It took 10 years of a colleague trying to persuade me to give it a try but from the first episode I was hooked.

FissionChips · 17/05/2019 15:09

He writers had an ending in mind and wanted to carry the show on 2 more seasons because they knew that’s what it would take to make it not shit*.

*the poor pacing of this series, the rushed character development, the terrible execution of the battles etc is all what makes it shit IMO.
I’ve paid plenty of attention to GoT, I’ve watched every episode at least 3 times.

ThatCurlyGirl · 17/05/2019 19:30

Thanks so much for all your responses! Fuck it I'm gonna give it a go.

I love a binge watch so hopefully I'll get into quickly!

I shall report back with my review of season one when I'm that far along!

I have Sky so assuming I can watch it on Sky Go from the start? Will try when I get home. I feel a bit excited to start!

Watch it! You won't regret it! I didn't start watching until 2015 and binge watched it all in about two weeks lol. Admittedly I didn't have as much to catch up on, but it's like crack. Once you start you can't stop. Just recently my DB and his DP have become hooked on it in the same way, after spending the last few years taking the piss out of me for being so obsessed with it. Lol. Ive never known anyone who's watched GOT and not liked it.

In fact I'm actually jealous of people who've never watched it because they get to see it all from the star with fresh eyes, and all the twists and turns that they won't know are coming.

Haha I still feel that when I see kids reading Harry Potter. Lucky little shits.

And so it begins...

I have just watched the lot ( obv not the very last episode) in the last 3 weeks. Had never seen an episode before that.
Have loved it and unsure what I’m going to watch now lol
For me the last 2 seasons have seen really rushed which is a shame but still in whole a great programme that I have really enjoyed

PositiveVibez · 17/05/2019 19:47

I've recently started watching it. My husband loves it but I watched one years ago and didn't think it was my cup of tea. However my sister urged me to watch it and we have similar tastes in TV progs, so I thought I'll give it a go.

I'm well and truly hooked. I go to bed early most nights so I can watch a couple and I'm half way through season 3 now.

Do it OP!!! You won't regret it. Well, I'm not so far.

ThatCurlyGirl · 17/05/2019 19:52

Hmm they've said flashing imagery which I have to be careful with. Surely they can't do anything flashier than Voldemort's Avada Kedavr and I was fine watching that. So fuck it let's try.

My ADHD brain has already kicked in ha it's shouting away!

Ok guys I'm officially ready to join your club, wish me luck.

Ps Is it me or does this guy looks like a baby Matt Damon?

I’ve just binged the whole thing in about a month. Watching about 3 episodes every night. That’s 2 seasons a week. It takes commitment!! I’ve watched no other tv in that time, don’t know what’s going on in the world and the only reason I still communicate with my DH is because he’s seen it all and can explain the complicated bits to me. I had an incentive because I wanted to watch the final episode as it goes out - or next Monday anyway - I’m not getting up at 2am to watch it!

When DH first watched it years ago, I was disgusted by it. He would watch his weekly episode in another room on his laptop. I couldn’t stomach the violence and horrible sex scenes.

Now I realise that it’s mainly the first and a bit of the second season that are very full-on sex wise, stuff that is gross and degrading to women, naked women purely set-dressing or masturbating each other in the background of scenes where men talk about war. It’s almost laughable. They hired porn actresses to do it. It’s not an easy watch. And it’s violent and gory. Medieval levels of brutality.

But then the plot gets you and the characterisation, they stop the sex nonsense and make it about war and politics and family loyalties. There’s some unpleasant stuff when one main character is taken prisoner (Alfie Allen’s character) but I fast forwarded that on DH’s advice.

It sounds awful I know but it’s very gripping and I have had to drag myself to bed in the early hours many times after gorging on too many episodes!

You can get a free trial of Now Tv and get started tonight!

escapade1234 · 17/05/2019 19:59

Oh, I see you are up and running - enjoy!!

This sounds like the dream TBH! A few years back my brother came to stay with me for a month or so and we binged prison break ridiculously. ONE MORE THEN WE HAVE TO GO TO SLEEP. We were all working on about five hours sleep a night because of beautiful bloody Michael Schofield!

Ok I'm in already.

Is it just me or does the Queens twin look exactly like Prince Charming from Shrek?!

From what I've read in spoilers by accident I gather he's about to do something not so charming to his sister.

Oh also I already want to be Arya.

OP posts:
blackteasplease · 17/05/2019 20:33

God yes. Binge watch all weekend!

blackteasplease · 17/05/2019 20:33

He (Jaime) looks less like Prince charming as it goes on.

JugzyMalone · 17/05/2019 20:34

@ThatCurlyGirl I think you've discovered why there have been many babies named Aria in the last 8 years

Weirdly few Cerseis 🤔

eternalopt · 17/05/2019 20:38

Sex scenes not a problem at all just triggering if sexual violence that's all so a bit mindful of that.

No one seems to have warned you yet that there is quite a lot of that so be careful if it triggers. Quite a few rape scenes and some of the scenes where women are bossed around in the brothels could be triggering I think.
