To think I won't survive on £48 pcm !

Long story short I've just become single 😀I've many a thread on here under a couple of user names over the last few years and you've helped me get through a really bad period with H. Thank you.

I was actually preparing to leave as the control and EA was getting so much worse. I need to do the Freedom Program. My plan was to attend the council as homeless.

But !!! He left on Sunday saying he was fed up went depression and I was an embarrassment. He's moved in with his Plan B.

So I applied for universal credit etc and met with a really helpful person at the job centre. It seems I'm entitled to £848 a month. But that includes my rent . Great except my rent is £800 pcm.

What do I do ? If I can't pay my rent I'll be intentionally homeless I expect so they won't help me ?

What are my options. My GP has said I'm unfit for work. Thanks to the H I've no family support. I'm not sure which way to turn. £48 won't cover the water gas electric etc.

I was so relieved when he left but now it's a hot mess !!

@JemimaPDuck I don't mean to be rude but please read more of the thread .

If you’re in an expensive area, demand for social housing is high so would be tough but if you’re over 55 you can essentially be fast tracked into a council bungalow. Go to the council ASAP.
Apply for a DHP payment to make up the shortfall in the short term. Do this ASAP as in today.

Thegardenismine · 17/05/2019 10:29

I've now checked about over 55s housing. My local council doesn't offer this. It's outsourced to other companies

I’ve read thread. Mental illness or not, the OP can’t afford not to work. Everyone can do something. In fact, I’ve lived in countries where there is zero social state and society still functions

Passthecherrycoke · 17/05/2019 10:34

It’s totally normal for over 55s housing to be offered by private companies (housing associations) and better for you, as you deal with their waiting lists not the council list hurrah!

Most important thing is the rent is STILL set at social housing levels, around £100 a week depends where you live. Don’t give in easily on this one, because youll have no problems getting it, I can assure you. In fact you’ll get a nice choice and can choose whatever you like the best

Passthecherrycoke · 17/05/2019 10:35

Sorry meant to add call back the council and ask for the names of the companies and call them

Toopoorforlife · 17/05/2019 10:36

Have you looked into DHP payments? My job used to involve awarding these, from the info you’ve given I would’ve awarded you 3 months worth to give you a chance to apply for or find other housing. This will cover your rent in full or atleast more than currently.
Most over 55s isn’t through the council anymore but is still applied for via bidding systems registered at the council. You need to speak with a homeless prevention officer at your local council, they too can usually fast track a DHP payment. (Although my Experience is from a fair few years ago)

cyclingmad · 17/05/2019 10:39

You can't afford to stay in your current place and need to downsize.

I can only assume you have no savings because of what happened with your ex, maybe your health and thats eaten into the savings but it is still a bit Hmm that despite having a good job before health issues there is zero savings left. But as I said I dont know your full story and assume there are reasonable reasons why.

ChariotsofFish · 17/05/2019 10:41

It doesn’t matter that the over 55 housing is outsourced, you can still apply.

TheInebriati · 17/05/2019 10:41

In fact, I’ve lived in countries where there is zero social state and society still functions

Yes, where there is no welfare state, society still functions, but individuals dont. HTH.

Thegardenismine · 17/05/2019 10:42

@JemimaPDuck
Thank you for reading through the thread. I'll get a job and point the poor work colleagues who said unintentionally the trigger that set me off back to you when they find me trying to hang myself ! Ffs I never ask anyone for sympathy, I hate asking for anything but please have some decency not to comment on my post unless like everyone one there's a genuine want to help !

Please ignore OP. Just ignore.
Some people are very ignorant.
The rest of us understand that there are certain circumstances in which you can't and shouldn't have to get paid work immediately.
Even the Tory government recognises that!

clairemcnam · 17/05/2019 10:45

anotheremma You are right and I was wrong, statutory sick pay is not relevant to OP. And it must have increased a lot recently, because last year I got £73.10 a week.

resisterpersister · 17/05/2019 10:47

Thegardenismine it's the mention of benefits. It doesn't half bring the arseholes out of the woodwork.

Their snide, unhelpful and unkind comments say much more about them than they do about you, I hope you're able to ignore them or at least not let them get to you too much.

There are lots of people on this thread who are on your side Flowers

AnotherEmma · 17/05/2019 10:47

No it didn't increase very much.
Perhaps you weren't entitled to SSP and you got ESA instead.

AnotherEmma · 17/05/2019 10:47

Cross post, I was replying to claire

MadCatEnthusiast · 17/05/2019 10:49

If the doctor has said you are unfit for work and you have evidence of this then you should be able to apply for PIP.

I think you're confusing ESA and PIP.

PIP isn't means tested - OP, you could apply for it anyway as long as her condition is a condition that lasts 12 months+. PIP used to allow you to get premiums with the older benefits however I don't think UC has premiums. Although if you are close to pension age, you would be moved to Disability Living Allowance anyway

Now, you could apply for the UC version of Employment and Support Allowance called the Limited Capability for Work. This is probably why the job centre have you sending in fit notes.

clairemcnam · 17/05/2019 10:49

anotheremma It said statutory sick pay on my pay slip.

WellThisIsShit · 17/05/2019 10:50

If your GP says you’re unfit for work does that mean you can apply for the disability related UC premiums?

I spent 5 months with a job coach telling me this didn’t exist and the only extra benefit for disabled people was DLA/PiP, but they were utterly wrong, and I finally got on the right path and got awarded the additional money which is basically what I live on (I’m in London, my rent is £1650pm!)

If so you need to get referred for an assessment for incapacity to work quickly...

Also have you looked into things like council tax lowered for being a single person, and lowered again for being disabled?

AnotherEmma · 17/05/2019 10:50

" if you are close to pension age, you would be moved to Disability Living Allowance anyway"

Nope

More nonsense

WellThisIsShit · 17/05/2019 10:52

Sorry my Mumsnet is playing up and I’ve been trying to reply since u first posted. I can’t see a lot of what’s happening since so hope any of my post is relevant!

claire
Your employer probably underpaid you and you should query it. See www.citizensadvice.org.uk/work/rights-at-work/sick-pay/check-if-youre-entitled-to-sick-pay/

MadCatEnthusiast · 17/05/2019 10:52

My mistake. I wasn't reading the sites properly

Thegardenismine · 17/05/2019 10:53

Sorry everyone, I shouldn't of reacted!

Apart from SSP when I was working I've not claimed any benefit.
Not that that's an excuse and I'm not justifying myself.

Thank you for all your kind replies .

I'm going to go to the council on Monday, get more advice and see what's available.
I do understand that I will have to move but with everything else it's a bit daunting!

Big girl knickers on for moving forward. Smile
