To ask how pregnant you think I am?

Contraception stopped 14 weeks ago , had one day of bleeding 10 weeks ago, negative pregnancy test(I think) 7 weeks ago. Positive test this week. How far gone am I then? Your supposed to date from last period but I believe I had a negative test since then so I don't know!

No idea.

I'd pay for a private scan to find out.

NauseousMum · 16/05/2019 11:46

Estimate based on your last period and get a scan done.

Damntheman · 16/05/2019 11:50

I'd hazard a guess of 7-8 weeks, but it's a wild guess based on nothing at all :) I had this with both my pregnancies due to wildly unpredicable cycles and both times had to get a dating scan.

DoneLikeAKipper · 16/05/2019 11:51

Unfortunately only a scan can tell, but at best estimate you’re probably 4/6 weeks pregnant, that’s assuming that the previous cycle was ‘missed’ as can happen when your cycle is settling back down.

kaytee87 · 16/05/2019 11:52

Impossible to say. Anywhere from 4-8 weeks probably.

Tirednessandmoretiredness · 16/05/2019 11:52

Take a test with conception indicator. They have been relatively accurate for me. X

spannerintheneck · 16/05/2019 11:53

I am waiting for a referral to a midwife and will explain the situation and hope for a dating scan, was just wondering if anyone would be able to give a better idea of how I should estimate it

OP posts:
DulcieRay · 16/05/2019 11:54

They'll tell you at your first scan (12 week/dating scan)

kaytee87 · 16/05/2019 11:54

Oh and congratulations

Passthecherrycoke · 16/05/2019 11:55

If you just give them the date of your last (proper) period you’ll get your 12 week scan sooner and that will confirm your dates

BlackeyedGruesome · 16/05/2019 11:56

9 weeks. you could have been late ovulating due to readjustment coming off contraception. tests may not pick up a pregnancy til your next period is due, which guessing would be shortly after the 7 week ago test

kaytee87 · 16/05/2019 11:57

@DulcieRay they won't know when to do it without an idea of how far along she is though.

Op you'll probably get given a scan ASAP to see how far along you are but it might be too early to see anything in which case they'll book you back in. It's important to have your '12 week scan' done between 11&14 weeks.

Remember they add 2 weeks on so for instance if they say you're 6 weeks pregnant you likely conceived 4 weeks ago etc.

spannerintheneck · 16/05/2019 12:00

They add 2 weeks on? I wasn't aware of this, is there a reason for that? So if when I speak to them I just give them my last period even though it was only 1 day they will give me a scan sooner if they think I'm already 10 weeks? I wish I had looked at the first test I took properly, I have it a quick glance and threw it away, I didn't look super close for a faint line as I've seen can happen,

And thankyou Kaytee 😊

outvoid · 16/05/2019 12:08

Anything between 4 and 10 weeks is a possibility. You need a scan.

Drum2018 · 16/05/2019 12:11

The only way it can be dated properly is with a scan. There is no way of knowing when you'd have ovulated after coming off the contraception. I came off pill and had a bleed. Then I had nothing for weeks. I went to gp after a positive test and he dated it back to the bleed after stopping pill (about 12 weeks). Had a scan and it showed the sac was only 5 weeks.

kaytee87 · 16/05/2019 12:12

They date pregnancy from the first day of your last period, they assume you ovulate/ conceive 2 weeks after this so when they measure the fetus they'll measure it as 6 weeks for eg even if you only conceived 4 weeks before.

kaytee87 · 16/05/2019 12:13

Start taking folic acid if you're not already doing so.

spannerintheneck · 16/05/2019 12:28

Ok thanks for the info Kaytee, hopefully I get a dating scan soon so I know where I actually am!

OP posts:
DulcieRay · 16/05/2019 12:31

Sure they won't know when @kaytee87 they'll have to guess

I have had to be dated by scan due to problems with my cycle more than once. That is how they do it if you really don't know.

TheCatInTheSquare · 16/05/2019 12:36

I had a similar problem last period and conception further apart then ecpected by 3 weeks. They think I just ovulated late. It happens.

We paid for a private scan first but if you aren't very far along you won't see much unless you get a transvaginal ultrasound maybe.

VampirateQueen · 16/05/2019 12:39

They work it on your last period. Then go for the 12 week scan and what is estimated to be the 12 week scan, the dating scan and at you know there how far gone you are.

kaytee87 · 16/05/2019 12:48

@DulcieRay yes but it's important to have your 12 week scan between 11&14 weeks for measurements for certain tests also dating becomes less accurate the further along you get so they may do a scan to date then another one if the first isn't within the right timeframe

DulcieRay · 16/05/2019 13:33

I'm just explaining from my experience what they do if you don't have a period date.
They estimate/guess. Some of us have been on contraception for years or sterilised and not been having regular periods but still get pregnant. So they send us for a dating scan and hope it's accurate.
