To hate Snape?

Rereading Harry Potter. I absolutely LOVE the books and have reread them a million times (seriously!)

But, I just don't get the fascination with him.

He was literally obsessed with Lily. He bullied children (especially Neville and when Hermiones teeth grew!). Yes he put himself in danger to save the wizards etc, but I don't think being a hero stops you being a complete arsehole!

People I know have the word "always" tattooed on them! Why? We teach kids not to bully but then say it's ok when Snape acts like that?!!

Ok, I'm very aware it's not real, but I get passionate about it 🤣

Yanbu, he’s a prick. The best that can be said of him is that love motivated him to renounce the absolute worst parts of his character. But the best parts of him are still abusive and shitty!

Gentlemanwiththistledownhair · 15/05/2019 19:42

Omg YES! I do not understand why people can forgive the fact he was an arsehole because he also happened to love someone...

iklboo · 15/05/2019 19:42

He was deep undercover, playing a role so as not to raise suspicion with He Who Cannot Be Named and his cronies. Being all Mary Poppins would have given the game away Grin

Haggisfish · 15/05/2019 19:43

He was bullied by Harry’s dad as well, though. A complex character!

2dogsand1baby · 15/05/2019 19:45

Agree, OP. But I do not hate him as much as Umbridge. Always struggle to read TOOTP, I'm reading the series for the umpteenth time atm, and stalled at book 5 again!

Aragog · 15/05/2019 19:45

Snape was bullied as a child too, quite a lot by James.

confusedandemployed · 15/05/2019 19:46

I love him, he's the product of his bad experiences and yet he puts aside his hatred of the people who bullied him mercilessly to save the life of one of their children in the name of love. He's brave, complex, very often deeply unpleasant but utterly loyal and brave. He's a fantastic character.

RasberryRoyale · 15/05/2019 19:47

I don’t mind him, he’s a complex character. I really don’t like Harry’s Dad though. He was an arse to Snape and even to Lily at times.

DoneLikeAKipper · 15/05/2019 19:48

He’s a cunt, James and Harry are both arrogant shitheads, Dumbledore is a straight up arsehole, Hermione is a terrible example of a strong female character, and Ron is a two-dimensional (at best) wet lettuce. His brother Fred was actually quite a nasty piece of work re-reading the books and I’m not particularly sad over his death. Actually, I have a lot of issues with many of the characters in HP, thought the world building itself is genuinely magical.

Kittykat93 · 15/05/2019 19:48

I think he's very complex. I cried like a baby when he died!!!

HBStowe · 15/05/2019 19:49

Harry’s dad was a tosser and a bully who grew up and dedicated his life to fighting an evil, racist enemy. It doesn’t make the bullying ok, but it shows the true character he developed.

snape was also a bully - in one flashback you see Lily is angry with him for calling her friend ‘mudblood’. So he was just as bad as James at school - only he went on to join the wizard KKK. And then when he left the Wizard KKK, he was still a bully! Neville’s parents were tortured to insanity and yet snape was still the thing he was most afraid of. He outed a harmless werewolf out of spite. Even when he knew Sirius was innocent, he tried to make him suffer the dementors kiss. He was a Very Bad Guy.

HoomanMoomin · 15/05/2019 19:50

YABU

hopelessatthinkingupusernames · 15/05/2019 19:51

Neville’s parents were tortured until they lost their minds, but the thing that scares him most in the world is Snape...

RedSheep73 · 15/05/2019 19:51

Well I think yabu - I'm one of those Snapefans I'm afraid. I can see he's obnoxious in many ways, but he gets all the best lines (and all in Alan Rickman's voice, in my head). He lives with his mistakes, and does what he thinks is right no matter what it costs him. I love all of HP, but Snape is my favourite.

Innersmellbow · 15/05/2019 19:51

I thought you meant the place Op.

Aragog · 15/05/2019 19:51

Now, Umbridge - she was properly horrid.

GhostIsAGoodBoi · 15/05/2019 19:52

@DoneLikeAKipper totally agree with all of that!

CherryPavlova · 15/05/2019 19:52

I thought you meant the Maltings and was going to say there are excellent concerts sometimes.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 15/05/2019 19:52

Though you meant Snape in Suffolk.

@HBStowe Sirius is my favourite and that part really made me furious Angry

Raindropsonroses27 · 15/05/2019 19:54

Snape is one of my favourite characters. Went deeply undercover and protected Harry all because he loved his mother. Don't see how he bullied her??

This part of the story is one of my favourites. He was never meant to be likeable, we were meant to keep guessing what side he was on until the very end

DannyWallace · 15/05/2019 19:54

Ok, I can't remember who to tag but those saying about James. Yes I agree, at school James was a bully.

@HBStowe said it better than I ever could.

Also, I agree with a lot of the main character being mean. The bit I struggle with loads though is Sirius often seems to be described as the father Harry needed...when Hagrid was the one who made him a birthday cake, took him clothes shopping, and looked after him so much while he was at school. Hagrid was just soooo good ❤️❤️

So strange! I am reading TGOF currently to my DC and read the part with Hermione's teeth only an hour ago!
Horrible character in the books but amazingly portrayed by the wonderful Alan Rickman. He is all I can see when I read a Snape scene.
