Hidden in plain sight

I often wonder what things are hidden in plain sight.. Nothing sinister or dodgy per se but more stuff you wouldn’t notice. We spend time geocaching and hiding painted stones but I often notice things that have no obvious explanation and think someone must know what that’s all about. Like the little knobble that spins on the bottom of the button you press when you cross the road- so that blind people know when it’s safe to cross.
What has got me thinking about this today is on my commute to work there is a yellow band painted around a lot (not all) of the lamp posts. I decided (probably incorrectly) that this would indicate a safe place for the bin lorry to stop. Just a meaningless post really but I’m sure there is all sorts out there that we just don’t notice.

On a grass verge leading out of our village is a green metal box with a handle on top of a pole. No one has any idea what it’s for! Never seen one like it anywhere else either.

On a section of the M20 I used to use there was a stretch with big white dots painted in the middle of each lane. I never figured out what they were supposed to mean.

FrogOfFrogHall · 14/05/2019 19:46

I think the white dots are to help you check you're leaving adequate stopping distance from the car in front

thenightsky · 14/05/2019 19:51

I thought the white dots were something to do with police helecopters spotting twocies.

Have you ever noticed an old Victorian lampost that had no light on the top anymore?

I did the other week and googled it and discovered it is something called a ‘Victorian stink pipe’ and lets gas out of the sewer. Now I see them everywhere!!

(I’m in the South East)

Scarves tied round trees. I notice it all the time when I am coming out of Euston station.

Ah so it is. Such a shame to see lovely mature trees go. Although I had wondered whether ES garden had been surrendered to deliberate neglect because when I was there a few weeks ago, it was covered in rubbish and the grass was going wild and full of weeds.
