To think this is flu, not a cold?

I’m always wary of misdiagnosing flu when it’s actually just a bad cold. But it’s 18 degrees and I’m wearing a jumper AND a dressing gown. I finally reached a comfortable temperature for about 30 seconds by putting the fan heater on - then I became uncomfortably hot Angry

I’m coughing so hard I shake. I had a retching fit earlier. Have I got the flu?

Sounds more like a cold I would say. I was so low with flu I wished for death rather than to be warm.

Not all illnesses are the common cold or influenza. Chances are it's some random virus. Hope you feel better soon!

NoHolidaysforyou · 14/05/2019 17:09

If you've got a fever and you're coughing badly you may have an infection, so you might want to make a GP appointment for that.

I had swine flu years ago. I could not move and was off work for weeks. Delirious and couldn’t eat anything. MNet wasn’t around then but I don’t think I would’ve been able to post. Definitely wanted to die

£20 test... if someone put a £20 note on your front garden would you go out and get it? If so, you have a cold.

Mind you this is mumsnet so £20 probably isn’t worth it to most posters... Grin

StillCoughingandLaughing · 14/05/2019 17:18

I do wonder if it might be viral.

I’m now sweating 😰

Sounds like a nasty cold and you've got a high temperature. Paracetamol should make you feel better. I'm just getting over it - felt wretched last week

steff13 · 14/05/2019 17:27

You don't have to wonder, go to the doctor and get a flu test.

Realistically, though, whether it's a cold or the flu, you need rest and fluids and Tylenol and/or Advil. A doctor won't do much for you but tell you it has to run it's course.

My daughter had influenza A last year - dignosed by her doctor. She was sick for two days, and the only reason I knew she was sick was because she told me she was feeling "fragile," and asked to hold my hand (her hand was very hot). Not everyone gets dealthy ill with the flu.

bumbleymummy · 14/05/2019 17:33

Some people have flu with no symptoms, some people have mild symptoms and some people are very ill with it. You sound pretty miserable, so no matter what it is I think you should get yourself off to bed with plenty of fluids and try to get some sleep!

bliminy · 14/05/2019 17:54

That's exactly how I was with swine flu OP.

Keep an eye on how you're feeling, and if it gets bad please seek medical attention. My SIL left it too late, and died of sepsis in A&E.

Likethebattle · 14/05/2019 17:59

Its sounds like a nasty virus and that could be flu, could be something else. Silver lining is that is one more virus you are now immune to.

RedSheep73 · 14/05/2019 17:59

I'm my experience, if you have flu you're lying down feeling terrible, not chatting on Mumsnet! If you have flu, you'll know it, just getting a drink if water or going to the toilet will be more than you can manage.

Parker231 · 14/05/2019 18:01

If you had flu you’d be in bed, unable to get up without difficulty and wouldn’t be able or want to spend time on Mn.

IWantMyHatBack · 14/05/2019 18:02

I was like this when I had pneumonia... Just sayin.
