kate Dh has been to Kaliningrad; db has been to Afghanistan and dh nearly went to Sierra Leone. The Kaliningrad trip was the fun one.

Mil booked to go to 'Persia' for a holiday, but we persuaded her not to go, given what dfil did and dh did at the time. we didn't want any diplomatic incidences with Iran!

SomethingOnce · 13/05/2019 23:29

Dubai. So much not to like.

Anywhere with dangerous snakes or spiders.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 13/05/2019 23:30

@Oliversmumsarmy I hate gambling and shopping too, and when I went to Vegas in December it was freezing.

Thought I'd hate it, loved every second

@Blueberrybell I live in New York and think it's actually a really love it or hate it place. But if you're on the hate side then it's grim.

Davespecifico · 13/05/2019 23:30

We went to Benidorm for the day. You can see why it was one of the original favourite Spanish holiday destinations.mthere are 2 beautiful enormous sweeping bays. It’s popular with many Spanish people, specially the Basques. There’s an area full of Basque tapas bars.
That said, I couldn’t go in holiday there.

MatthewBramble · 13/05/2019 23:31

King's Lynn

ineedaknittedhat · 13/05/2019 23:32

Everywhere apart from Norway, Finland, Iceland and Scotland.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 13/05/2019 23:36

My God you lot are fussy 😯

scaryteacher · 13/05/2019 23:36

What's wrong with Gosport and Cornwall? Alverstoke is very naice...and Cornwall is lush and beautiful and I can't wait to live there again later this year.

As for Cornwall not catering for veggies - cheese and onion oggies are veggie, and much nicer than the meat ones. There are good Indian restaurants as well who do veggie food, and many first class restaurants who offer vegetarian courses as well.

Pakistan...it might be beautiful, but safe it is not, and it is not somewhere I would choose to pay to go to.

I spent a summer abroad during my 3rd year in uni in Shanghai, China and also visited Beijing and the Great Wall of China.

It was the most amazing experience to immerse myself into a completely different culture. Having spent 7 weeks in Shanghai, it is a very developed city with a metro system that can take you to many attractions, temples and other tourist sites really easily. The nightlight is amazing and there are many western restaurants so you do not need to eat Chinese food but the western food is more expensive.

Things like taxi's are really cheap, metro is very cheap but eating out is most likely the same as back home or slightly more expensive. Chinese people are so amazed when they see white people that they stop you to take photos or photos with them or their children. Most people do this as a symbol of kindness because they are fascinated with you and are genuinely lovely but there are the odd few (mostly on the metro) that are being rude about it.

China is a very safe place to visit although I was part of a large group. I do not know about other regions of China, I did visit Hong Kong as well and did not like it there.

When I was in Las Vegas, I never gambled. Each hotel has something different or unique, attractions etc that you can do, shows you can see, amazing restaurants and tours. You can hold a baby lion in the MGM for example and see pilots of TV shows that have not been aired to TV yet and you can rate them. The results contribute towards whether the show gets picked up or not. I also went to the Grand Canyon and hoover dam and that was also great.

I do not think there is a country that I would not go to apart from war related countries that are deemed unsafe. I do not particularly have an interest in Germany, Iceland or Amsterdam. I prefer very hot countries, a city to explore but also a beach is fantastic.

I really want to go to Italy, Rome and Sorrento.

Australia is definitely on my list. So many places you can go there: Melbourne, Sydney, Byron Bay, Queensland etc. Its full of possibilities.

What indicates where you go (for me) is cost as obviously Australia or America is very expensive compared to somewhere in Europe.

Saltystraw · 13/05/2019 23:41

It’s interesting to see how many people say Australia.. we have such a diverse landscape that their really is something for everyone.. If you don’t like the heat go to the south.. It’s beautiful. The north is hot but just as beautiful.

There are dangerous animals but it’s not like they are everywhere or going to get you in your sleep.. I’m in the suburbs but travel a lot.. I rarely see snakes, sometimes spiders but not the dangerous ones.

To an earlier poster..I wouldn’t say we are a racist country but we definitely have racist people.. just like a lot of countries in the world. We are actually very multicultural, especially in the cities.

woodcutbirds · 13/05/2019 23:41

Thailand - I imagine it as being full of drug-fuelled gap-yah students and little else.

Vietnam. I'd like to visit but have been told they put fish sauce in absolutely everything they cook, like we add salt to food, and I'm allergic to it.

Dubai - sounds so dull and vapid.

MrSlant · 13/05/2019 23:43

Well I normally read these threads just so I can have a bet with myself about how soon Bridlington appears so I am horrified Scarborough is getting all the love hate. That's a lovely bit of the coastline you are missing out on.

Don't anyone go to Wales on holiday though, especially the west, it's horrible, HORRIBLE I tell you, don't go there. please we have enough tourists and I don't share nicely

If I had all the money in the world and wasn't scared of flying I'd want to try as much of everywhere as I could apart from the sexist countries/ones who persecute LGB people. None of my imaginary money for them.

Dumplingfan · 13/05/2019 23:44

Yarmouth

Bedforaweek · 13/05/2019 23:47

@Wimbledonwomble
Why not Beirut out of curiosity?
I’ve been and it’s a super interesting place

@wellballstoyou
The whole or Africa?!?

Jaxhog · 13/05/2019 23:48

Surprised China is on the list. It's amazing! The people are lovely and very friendly, the architecture is like nowhere else and the scenery is beautiful.

Most of Russia

augustusglupe · 13/05/2019 23:53

Dubai, Marbella and Abersoch (wilmslow by sea)

Allhailthesun · 13/05/2019 23:54

Australia never appealed but I’m warming to it now I want to find a country warmer than speaks English.

Blah to New Zealand. Like Scotland but in the 1950’s judging from the TV shows. Yes, fab scenery but then, so has the south of France.

I don’t mind leery middle eastern men. I get misogyny and can play the game. It’s great when you find men in a vile country that aren’t twats, They are billion times better than insipid men in the first world that pretend they like women ( but 100%/find cycling sexier).

Third World is too hard work. I grew up without stuff ( not third world but lack of food and heat ) and it scars you. It’s not a holiday when you can buy nice clean water for relatively little and the locals have to drink whatever shit is available. I come back feeling horrendous.

BlackcurrantJamontoast · 13/05/2019 23:56

British Airways fly to Beirut, it is a great long weekend destination.

recklessgran · 13/05/2019 23:59

Benidorm
Turkey
Egypt
Tunisia

GreenDragon75 · 14/05/2019 00:00

What’s wrong with Turkey? Beautiful country - lovely friendly people- shit government but you could say that about many places.

YoThePussy · 14/05/2019 00:04

Alicante is high on my list of places that suck. It does have a lovely art gallery though.

Las Vegas, the only reason to go there is it is where trips to the Grand Canyon start off.

Polperro in Cornwall, the smell of fish and chips hits you as you drive down the hill to it. The rest of Cornwall is gorgeous.

India is fabulous even though I got bitten by a rabid dog there and had to fly home to have rabies injections

Even the vilest places usually have something going for them.

soulrunner · 14/05/2019 00:16

does anyone live in the most popular mentions on here and can dispel it?

I used to live in Dubai, albeit not for long and a while ago. I'm not going to defend their human rights record but there are a couple of misconceptions on here - you won't get any hassle from local men (totally different to N Africa) and you definitely won't get "arrested for holding hands" with your partner. Sheikh Mo publicly holds hands with his wife.

I now live in HK and tbh I can see why tourists are disappointed by it especially if the weather's shitty when they're here. If you come for a while and the weather's good there is some stunning hiking/ nice beaches and obviously a lot of great food but it's very expensive and there aren't a lot of "wow" things to visit other than the skyline on the postcards. There is some interesting stuff but it tends to be spread about a bit and you need to read up in advance to contextualise it (lots of old WW2 infrastructure etc).

On that note, China. It's a hugely diverse and amazing country and some of it is absolutely stunning so I'm kind of surprised to see it on the list.

India - I spend a lot of time there for work and while it's fascinating it's probably the least relaxing country to visit, ever. I get why people might not want to holiday there because you come home exhausted (one stop trips to Goa etc aside).

Australia- lived here for a while and also spend a lot of time there for work. I don't think Australia is "culturally racist". There are some racist people there, for sure, as there are everywhere. I think they can be slightly insular, especially in more remote areas, but that's hardly surprising. Again, such a geographically diverse and beautiful country. I love WA and Tasmania is on my bucket list.
