As an Aussie I'm a bit perplexed by the Australia hate.... I'll concede the flight is a bugger, but I'm from Victoria and it's certainly not always hot! And aboriginal people have the longest unbroken culture in the world, at least 60,000 years (or is that the 'wrong' sort of culture? 🙄 ). I'm not so keen on the hot and dry desert interior, but we have the tropics, the alpine region, temperate rainforest in the south...

HellonHeels · 15/05/2019 09:29

Paris is also lovely.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 15/05/2019 09:29

To those thinking about going to Talllinn - if the medieval restaurant in the square is still there, go! The food's truly excellent and they did the best cinnamon beer I've ever tasted.

And watch out for the keik in de kok :)

Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 · 15/05/2019 09:30

Oh and we went to Provence with my dad and sister summer 2017 and the people couldn't have been friendlier, or more tolerant of our attempts to speak French 😊. They were also great with DTDs

HellonHeels · 15/05/2019 09:30

I dont understand dislike for Japan. It is fab, culture, architecture and it's traditional art forms are all wonderful.

ImpracticalCape · 15/05/2019 09:32

@Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 I'm in NZ. Lots of people on the thread have lumped Aussie and NZ together or Aussie is written of due to 'spoders' and NZ 'because it's just Scotland'.

No matter. We get to keep our beautiful subtropical little quiet environment to ourselves....Grin.

HeronLanyon · 15/05/2019 09:37

Ibiza is remarkably varied though. No reason to avoid if not into clubbing scene. Santa Gertrudis, san Vicente San Carlos, la corona, area around cala Cabo etc tend to be quieter even in high season. Very cool, expensive lovely agroturi places close to quiet beaches. SAN Antonio is easily avoided. Formentera lovely but I tend to
Avoid August which is when many many Italians are there - just because it becomes crowded. Love Ibiza.

ballisticcyclistic · 15/05/2019 09:40

Why on earth would anyone not want to visit Australia? Confused Whsyd the issue there? I once lived in Melbourne for a year and Sydney for 8 months. There is so much to see! There’s the Great Ocean Road, the Red Interior. Aboriginal culture and art. Wildlife there is like nowhere else on earth. The Whitsundays. All the beaches actually. The Great Barrier Reef. Stunning!

I’ve never been to NZ but I think it looks incredible.

OccidentalPurist · 15/05/2019 09:43

Wimbledonwomble I second the UK being more beautiful than many places. Years ago I returned from spending time in Northern California and I was struck by how much more beautiful the Sussex countryside was than its US equivalent.

When my US cousin visited, who's based in Santa Fe, she loved the strict distinction between cities and the countryside. The planning laws in the US are more relaxed and you have to drive through miles of ugly urban sprawl before you can find true countryside apparently.

Monestasi · 15/05/2019 09:43

Probably should've said "any war torn country".Beirut came to mind due to an episode of Only Fools & Horses when Del, Rodney & Cassandra went on a crap holiday to Spain. Rodney said that Cassandra would "rather be self catering in Beirut!" I always remember that line when the subject of holidays from hell comes up

Beirut was war torn, it certainly isn't now, It is a phenomenal place. Beguiling, and so visually and culturally stimulating. I go often, and feel safe there... The only thing I don't really like is the traffic and my weight gain - fantastic food!!

Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 · 15/05/2019 09:48

@ImpracticalCape 😁. Yeah we'll keep our lovely antipodean corner of the world to ourselves 😉. Definitely going to visit NZ after we move to Oz in October.

Persimmonn · 15/05/2019 09:51

Alabama has also made abortion illegal. I wonder whether those championing women’s rights on this thread would consider going to a country that doesn’t even respect women’s rights to her own body.

HeronLanyon · 15/05/2019 10:13

Re the us my dp flat-out refuses to go to the states. I personally would no longer go to any state with the death penalty and/or with laws targeting women/gay rights etc. Frankly it’s a moot point given dps position which I respect. I am originally American and know that there is variety and opposition etc. Shame to not share the great things about the us but I can live with that.

DizzyPigeon · 15/05/2019 10:16

Are you in the North of nz? Most of nz is a temperate climate.. Like the UK ;)

ImpracticalCape · 15/05/2019 10:46

Yes in the north @DizzyPigeon. We are still ocean swimming!

findingmyfeet12 · 15/05/2019 11:37

I've been to Dubai and wouldn't visit again. I had a good holiday but it was just too warm to enjoy the beach. There's plenty to do and I think it's worth it if you have children. We didn't find it too expensive either.

I don't mind holidaying in a place where I just relax on the beach. I'm not always looking for an activity packed holiday. I'm not sure why people assume that you can't hold hands in public or wear bikinis etc.

I would love to visit South Africa but I'd be worried about safety issues.

lisalocketlostherpocket · 15/05/2019 11:45

I hope all the posters championing a boycott of countries where women are discriminated against will be boycotting the US given recent developments

While I deplore what is going on in Alabama, I would still be able to walk down the street alone without covering myself up in a black cloak without being beaten up by religious police there, unlike certain other countries. Not that it would be on my list of places to visit anyway. The US doesn't appeal that much other than San Diego, Seattle and a few places on the Eastern seaboard.

MorrisZapp · 15/05/2019 12:03

Why boycott the US? Many States are more socially liberal than the UK. I'm not sure Alabama is a well worn tourist route, and even if it was, you won't need an abortion there. Presumably women are free to drive, walk the streets, drink alcohol and kiss people they aren't married to.

pearldeodorant · 15/05/2019 12:05

flopsyandflim · 15/05/2019 12:10

Butlins/Centre parcs/Haven/Pontins

Dubai

juneau · 15/05/2019 12:19

I love the US (but hate Trump). We go there regularly. Love Europe too - those two continents basically provide everything I can ever imagine wanting or needing in terms of travel experiences. I don't care for seriously long haul travel, don't care for roughing it or going to places without decent food hygiene and sanitation, don't want to visit places that were built with slave labour or where women/westerners are second class citizens. F* that!

Gth1234 · 15/05/2019 12:30

ENGLAND is great though. I say England because I live in the midlands. Other parts of England are in easy travelling distance, unlike some other countries.

You can take a 2-3 day holiday absolutely ANYWHERE in England, and find plenty to do and see, eg We had a weekend in Swindon. Took in Marlborough, White Horse, Avebury. Spoilt for choice. We had a lovely few days in Kent. We found loads to see near Lowestoft. etc.

I imagine any other country is equally good when you live there. So the real issue, is which countries you would like to visit, compared with others. and I would prefer to visit safe Western countries rather than clearly not-so-safe countries.

Oliversmumsarmy · 15/05/2019 13:33

Gth1234 those you can do as a day out you don’t need to spend days there.

I am left wondering if there is a place where everyone agrees is wonderful.

For a holiday I want at least late 30degrees. The hotter the better.
Somewhere I can eat out, vegetarian with several food related allergies. Somewhere that doesn’t rely on alcohol to make it feel great and somewhere where I can do things that I can’t do at home.
Plus has a great 5 star hotel or lovely Airbnb with private pool.
And is a “safe” country

YouBumder · 15/05/2019 14:08

Comparing somewhere to Scotland certainly isn’t a slight. My country is stunning!

DizzyPigeon · 15/05/2019 14:18

*I am left wondering if there is a place where everyone agrees is wonderful.

The answer to your question is no. Late 30 degrees is not something I'm looking for!
