Lots of posters saying they wouldn't go to Maldives. Can you say why please - before I book. Maldives or Seychelles are on my bucket list

MsTSwift · 14/05/2019 23:42

We went to Africa (Kenya) for a wedding then a holiday tacked on. It was terrifying although the trip was amazing and memorable dh and I would never go back there.

OccidentalPurist · 15/05/2019 00:09

Las Vegas. My friend went there last summer with her family and said there were so many overweight people constantly gorging on food that she used to wake up in the middle of the night worrying how the desert based sewage system could cope!

UnRavellingFast · 15/05/2019 01:02

@thenightsky I'd not rule anywhere out tbh. The whole world is worth a look, even if it's only once

Well said. Every single place has fascinating bits and awful bits. What a shame to slate places willy nilly. Also btw England has a huge load more stunning coasts than just (lovely) Cornwall and Devon for heaven's sake.

Guylian2019 · 15/05/2019 06:11

Turkey
China
Anywhere like Magaluf in binge drinker season

wichitalinemanswoman · 15/05/2019 06:29

Dubai
Tunisia
South Africa
Any ski resort
Blackpool

F1zzB1zz · 15/05/2019 06:44

Sorry I disagree the whole world is definitely not worth a look once. That is a pretty silly thing to say. Plenty of countries will have a variety of reasons that make having a look just not worth it to many.

F1zzB1zz · 15/05/2019 06:45

And saying you don’t want to visit somewhere for a reason is not slating it willy nilly.Hmm

Wimbledonwomble · 15/05/2019 07:02

Agree. And it's not just coastline, the UK is full of stunning, varied, scenery such as Dartmoor, Snowdonia, Lake District, Yorkshire Dales etc and some historic towns and cities - so much history. We always see & do so much more on our UK trips than European beach resorts where there's often little to do other than lie on a sunbed!

vampirethriller · 15/05/2019 07:09

Australia
Highlands of Scotland
Disneyland
Any skiing type place

I don't like spiders, Disney or mountains/snow!

NorthernRunner · 15/05/2019 07:12

Erm to be honest I would love to Holiday in most places.
The only place that springs to mind that I would be a bit Hmm about going is Dubai

Surprised how many people have said Japan, that’s my favourite place on earth 😊

Mrsjayy · 15/05/2019 08:24

Japan looks rammed full of people I enjoy travel documenteries and the one I saw on Japan made me a bit queasy all those people no thanks Grin

Oliversmumsarmy · 15/05/2019 08:25

I have been to most places mentioned.

Dubai I liked as a real get away holiday. It was when Dd was abut 1 years old and we

woodcutbirds · 15/05/2019 08:32

@MsTSwift - why was Kenya terrifying? I went years ago and loved it. Did you feel under threat?

ImpracticalCape · 15/05/2019 08:34

Anyone wondering why not Maldives, it's because tourism has made it into an environmental and ethical disaster area.

  • an island full of rubbish
  • reefs and environmentally unique and sensitive areas cleared to make beach access or built airports
  • all provisions, oils and diesels has to be shipped in and tiny Male can't supply to demand of the resorts. The resorts also clear out the markets meaning locals are left with nothing
  • the islands don't have the infrastructure to cope with all the rubbish and sewage etc so it gets dumped into the sea
  • for Maldivian men their only chance of a decent income is to work in the resorts working 18 hours a day, 7 days a week to serve rich western tourists alcohol and pork against their religion and they are often away from their families for 10 months at a stretch. They have no option. It's either that or poverty.

maldivesindependent.com/environment/maldives-blasted-for-destroying-the-environment-138678

That's enough for me. The Maldives was on my list when we were planning a no expense spared holiday. When I read about it I vowed I would not be part of the problem.

MsTSwift · 15/05/2019 08:37

Wood - yes. I wouldn’t return. Dh and I quite widely travelled but Kenya we felt properly threatened.

PtarmiganBiscuit · 15/05/2019 09:08

Maldives, aside from the environmental and political issues....I’d get v v bored. I love snorkelling but two weeks of lying on a beach, snorkelling and eating in the same few restaurants....I’d be a basket case. It’s not how I relax.....

Hollowvictory · 15/05/2019 09:09

Loved Maldives and would happily return

HeronLanyon · 15/05/2019 09:11

Just adding to Maldives being problematic - a quick google re human rights and recent political corruption is pretty horrifying.
On a lighter note is also need to be able to avoid what look to be pretty omniprésent honeymoon stuff. Straight honeymoons because same sex sex is of course illegal !
Went to the Andaman Islands recently. Hell of an effort getting there and not problem free but would recommend.

Oliversmumsarmy · 15/05/2019 09:13

Sorry dabbed post by mistake

We wanted just a relaxing holiday with some sun so didn’t really leave the hotel.

Maldives I love snorkelling and diving. I did sit on a beach for a couple of hours each day but I was in the water most other times.
Rubbish we were told to take with us.

Florida we have done the Theme parks, Miami, The Keys, and Fort Lauderdale and other resorts. You cannot write off a whole state just because you don’t like one place. Florida is huge and different places offer different things.

Las Vegas I actually quite liked, even though it was freezing, I don’t gamble or drink and I don’t like clothes shopping.
The latter always proves to be a problem as i never dress well and usually stick out like a sore thumb. Las Vegas was an eye opener. I didn’t feel out of place as everyone appeared to dress like me and it was my family who stuck out.
I found my style, a Las Vegas gambler 😂

There was so much more to do in Vegas other than gambling. We want to go again because all the things we had planned to do went out of the window because Dp got ill.

I love California. Even though it has never been exactly hot when we have been. More like this is where my home is.

Egypt. I have been a few times and never had a problem with men staring or following me. Probably because I have a certain look. I spent the time by the pool or sightseeing.

I personally wouldn’t holiday in the UK
I have lived in most towns/cities and nothing really appeals. I don’t even like where I live now let alone spend money on visiting the place.
The weather and expense puts me off. Also after living in a lot of towns the planners appear to have got a blue print (I think they think people don’t travel and won’t notice) and used it over and over.
At one point I walked into a town centre and actually couldn’t remember where I was as it looked so like most of the other towns I have lived in.
Same shops in the same order.

The seaside resorts seem to have an obsession with slot machines and a few small rides or if they have beaches with nothing to do other than eating, crazy golf and some sort of aquarium.
I can do all that without going on holiday.

Want to go to Romania and Croatia at some point and would like to go to India, Mexico and explore South America

Been to Turkey. Was bored to tears.

DuchessAnnogovia · 15/05/2019 09:17

Dubai
Rhyll
Blackpool
Great Yarmouth
Australia (only because of the HUGE creepy crawlies)
Any Disney theme park

HBStowe · 15/05/2019 09:20

I’m obviously only listing places some people do want to go on holiday to, so ignoring war torn countries etc.

Dubai (human rights)
UAE (human rights)
Magaluf / ibiza / Zante etc (not my scene)

Sickofphd · 15/05/2019 09:24

I hope all the posters championing a boycott of countries where women are discriminated against will be boycotting the US given recent developments Hmm

HellonHeels · 15/05/2019 09:26

France outside the capital is amazing. I did a long distance hike in rural France and met lovely people.
