I will not gov to a country where I will be discriminated against because I’m a woman.

Then I hope you're at liberty to discover an uninhabited island somewhere. Sad though it is, ALL countries discriminate against women. Misogyny is a human trait, not a cultural or religious one; in fact, it's only some of the primitive societies with strong matriarchies where it barely exists.

Some societies pretend to be liberal and free, but covert discrimination is sometimes as powerful and insidious as direct oppression. The only thing that generally varies is the level of that discrimination and oppression.

Anywhere in a tent.

MissPollyHadADolly19 · 14/05/2019 17:53

@Basil you definitely can separate the two, it just takes understanding.
UK for example is a "Christian Country" I put that in quotation marks as it's not a true representation of how I feel about it.
I can bet less than 50% of the so called Christians of this country wouldnt even know the Fathers Prayer nor the 10 commandments.
English culture is not very Christian in the slightest.
I live an Islamic life religiously but my culture is still English. My DH is South Asian so he follows cultural practices but still maintains Islam as his religion, we clash culturally because even though we follow the same religion the upbringing and basic ethic of our lives are different.
I hope that makes sense.

Tbh it takes alot of knowledge of both, not just from internet or books but lived in experience to really know the difference between the two.

Evening, everyone. Can we just appeal for a bit of peace and love here? If the thread turns bunfighty we'll have to zap it.

We've made a few deletions on the thread. Obviously, everyone's welcome to their opinion on any place in the world (apart from Kentish Town where the sun shines 365 days a year and the streets are paved with smoked salmon blinis and joy. Ahem) but please ensure you aren't making sweeping accusations about entire nations and peoples. Thanks!

LakieLady

Haha my mil drives there for a swim !

Persimmonn · 14/05/2019 18:03

Thank you MN.

Dowser · 14/05/2019 18:08

Thailand
Cambodia
Bolivia...don’t fancy any South American country to be fair but that’s probably because I’m ignorant as I’ve never been
Antarctica or anywhere in arctic circle
N Africa
Cyprus..I’ve been and it was ok
Gibraltar..been there and it was kind of ok
Australia or New Zealand...too far and neither have appealed to me
Belize...
Probably anywhere with mosquitoes
China
Anywhere where there’s an awkward descent to an airport..like Hong Kong
Anywhere where the British are hated...that probably rules out 3/4 of the world
Places where there are security issues and you’re confined to the resort

I’ll stick with Tenerife

Tobebythesea · 14/05/2019 18:11

Tunisia, Egypt, most of India.

SerenDippitty · 14/05/2019 18:12

Las Vegas (admittedly I went there a very long time ago when there was nothing to see or do other than gamble and it really was a shithole.

The Algarve, just didn’t like it.

Blackpool.

More generally anywhere where there is nothing to do except lie on a sun lounger.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/05/2019 18:15

my experience with the French outside their capital is rather unpleasant

Genuinely surprised about this one; I've spent years in total all around France and have honestly never met an unpleasant local

A little "nationalistic" perhaps - it's no accident that le coq gaulois is one of their emblems!! - but unfailingly polite and welcoming

Tobebythesea · 14/05/2019 18:15

Why do people not want to go to the the Maldives? What am I missing here?

Nanamilly · 14/05/2019 18:17

Also cruises, or any sort of holiday involving organised entertainment, group bonding sessions, organised day trips.. just hit my thing, I like travelling alone and setting my own agenda

Going on a cruise has never stopped me travelling alone and setting my own agenda. Quite the opposite in fact.

Outofinspiration · 14/05/2019 18:20

It's not the 'religious' aspect of Dubai that puts me off - it's that the entire place is nothing more than an exercise in dick swinging. It just looks awful.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 14/05/2019 18:20

Why do people not want to go to the the Maldives? What am I missing here?

I think ‘beautiful but boring’ is the general consensus.

Linguaphile · 14/05/2019 18:21

Gosh this thread makes me so sad.

BasilTheGreat · 14/05/2019 18:25

@MissPolly You are gracious representative of your religion, I wish more were like you. Nowadays you’re branded a racist as soon as you have different view, no discussion. My DH is also from an Asian background. My MIL was born in Sindh Smile All the best.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/05/2019 18:26

Anywhere where there’s an awkward descent to an airport..like Hong Kong

I think that might have been the old Kai Tak ("the only place where folk sell you things before you land")?

They've got a new one now, on Chek Lap Kok island ...

Nanamilly · 14/05/2019 18:28

Those saying all arab states have totally overlooked Oman which is EPIC, really lovely people and not dubai-ish at all

shush, dont tell them.

CherryPavlova · 14/05/2019 18:29

Maldives have very poor human rights record.
Tourism and waste disposal is a very serious issue with poor performance by Maldives.

Hefzi · 14/05/2019 18:29

Rather chuffed that my favourite places are on so many people's avoid list: long may that continue Wine

I can't help but feel that some posters believe "Africa" to be a country, though Hmm

And as for boycotting places because of their human/women's rights issues - to be intellectually consistent, that wipes out much of South and Central America, the US, most of Eastern Europe, Russia, the Indian Subcontinent, the Koreas, Japan, Thailand, Indo-China, China, Burma/Myanmar, as well as - arguably - NW Europe includes the British Isles: it's not just the "Middle East", no matter what MN believes.

And Canada: lovely to refugees and asylum seekers. Not so very lovely to the First Nations.

beanaseireann · 14/05/2019 19:16

India.
The Middle East
Pakistan
Bangladesh
North Africa
Central Africa
Unstable countries in Central America
Unstable countries in South America.
Alaska
Antarctica

Abbazed · 14/05/2019 19:29

London/ norfolk

LysistrataLady · 14/05/2019 19:29

I actually want to visit Jaywick now to see what all the fuss is about...

Abbazed · 14/05/2019 19:29

Norfolk/ London

Dowser · 14/05/2019 19:32

Barry Island...lol...we go there a couple of times a year..it’s a great base for exploring South Wales...plus we have family there
I’ve been going for 60 years off and on.

So looked forward to Oban..stayed on beautiful loch melfort...well it would’ve been if it wasn’t for the rain that was almost constant for the four nights we were there..that you could hardly see a thing

Need to google Jaywick....where is that

Might’ve changed my views on China..but won’t be going...too far

Someone mentioned Cuba...Cuba was amazing, people fabulous and very safe. That was Havana, Cienfuegos, Santa Clara

I like beaches l but not sitting on them endlessly..so Maldives would be off my list
Skiing...yes did that in winter park...amazing scenery...won’t be doing it again. Hated skiing. Too cold.

But there’s one place that I will never , ever visit again
Maubisson. Never. Ever..again.and I love France.
