France (except Paris): no offense to any French people here, but my experience with the French outside their capital is rather unpleasant.

OMG

mojitoclock · 14/05/2019 15:07

How can you have had unpleasant experiences with “the French?”

“The French” are as varied as “the British” surely?

I mean, I know I’ve been negative about the grey buildings of Scotland, but I couldn’t generalise about “the Scottish.” Most are no doubt lovely, like anywhere else.

Thisismynewname123 · 14/05/2019 15:10

I find this thread quite depressing. I don't think I would rule out anywhere (barring places that could my life at risk). With a bit of research, there are interesting and unspoiled parts of pretty much all countries, if you find your way off the beaten track.

Hollowvictory · 14/05/2019 15:18

^^I would not recommend going off the beaten track in Blackpool

mydogisthebest · 14/05/2019 15:25

France is a lovely country filled with, mainly, pleasant friendly French people. It has some beautiful scenery

I lived there for 4 years and was fully expecting some problems as I lived in a small village. All the people were lovely (more so than most of the neighbours I have ever had in the UK). They would leave gifts of flowers, veg, homemade wine etc on my doorstep.

Surprised that someone mentioned Sweden. That too is a beautiful country, far more beautiful that I was expecting. Very expensive though.

IABUQueen · 14/05/2019 15:36

Any Islamic country. don’t let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya, then.

Wow this thread is showing some people’s true colours. Islamophobia is actually similar to racism, if you don’t realise.

I hope those who are stating all the Muslim holiday destination as a no go place, also have a similar stance to the non-Muslim counties abusing humans rights... such as Israel, USA, Russia, China....

Otherwise clearly your issue isn’t just human rights now is it.

Now I'm not having all this nonsense about Aberdeen. The architecture is stunning: tall, dramatic, and built with granite that sparkles in sunlight. It's magical. The local folk are stylish and friendly. There is so much to do. There are some truly exceptional places to eat fabulous local seafood. I love Aberdeen.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 14/05/2019 15:46

Islamophobia is not the same as not wanting to support an oppressive regime via tourism, if you don’t realise.

IABUQueen · 14/05/2019 15:49

Islamophobia is not the same as not wanting to support an oppressive regime via tourism, if you don’t realise.

Except not all Muslim countries have that “regime” you refer to. And that “regime” isn’t only available in Muslim countries. Silly.

Anyway I’m out.

chemenger · 14/05/2019 15:51

I’m from Aberdeen, it’s beautiful in the sun, all silvery, sparkly granite. Great beach, easy availability of butteries. On a dreich, rainy day it is dark, grey and depressing. Union Street is a disgrace, a pale shadow of what it used to be. For a city that had decades of oil boom it has failed to be what it could have been with judicious investment in something other than shopping centres, although it seems to be improving on that now.

BasilTheGreat · 14/05/2019 16:02

The reason I don’t want to go to an Islamic country is their common view that women are subordinate men. I don’t have anything against the Muslim people but don’t care for any religion that view me as lesser than men. I would definitely not set my foot in the Gulf states because of their appalling treatment of women and people in general.

Haisuli · 14/05/2019 16:03

I know I would never go to Dubai or the UAE. I would also never go camping again or stay in a Eurocamp or Haven as I didn't enjoy them. With holidays being so rare I don't think I would choose to go anywhere cold or wet.
For me the best holidays are blue. I love the sun, and the sea and the mountains. A combination of all 3 and amazing food, is where I want to be. This is why I love Turkey and often think about going back. I think that people who rule it out and have always ruled it out are missing out big time.

Grumpbum123 · 14/05/2019 16:06

Anywhere in the Middle East or where there is a viable terrorist threat
London
Blackpool
Butlins/pontins
Texas
Las Vegas
Marbella
Ibiza

BlackInk · 14/05/2019 16:13

Dubai
Las Vegas
Disneyland anywhere
A cruise ship...

I can honestly say that it I was handed a free ticket to any of these holidays I would give it away, and if I couldn't give it away I still wouldn't go!

Anywhere run by a dangerous, brutal or misogynist regime. And anywhere that is at all physically unsafe, or where I would have to 'rough it': I am very 'wimp'-ish due to having some health problems.

ddl1 · 14/05/2019 16:23

'I wouldn't go to an Islamic country either. Or Paris.'

I wouldn't go to a country run by an Islamic government either; but Paris is great!

Hiddenaspie1973 · 14/05/2019 16:27

Dubai.
Gaza strip
Libya
Anything ending in stan.
Mexico or Cuba (but oh wants to go)

ChopinIn10Minuets · 14/05/2019 16:28

Sorry that should be UAE and not USSR silly autocorrect

Although I'm surprised that 13 pages in Russia hasn't been mentioned, TBH. Not ruling Russia out, mind, but I'm sure some cities/regions are a bit marmite. Trans Siberian Railway tours anyone? Grin

motheroftwoboys · 14/05/2019 16:33

Blackink - please can I have your free cruise ticket? Wink saying you wouldn't go on a cruise is as a daft assaying you wouldn't stay in a hotel. The cruise lines are massively different and appeal to totally different demographics - and price ranges. don't knock it till you have tried it. Honest. That was me once! I agree with your Dubai, Disney or Las Vegas choices though but wouldn't turn down a free ticket to almost anywhere.

Doobigetta · 14/05/2019 16:35

I don’t have any interest in going to big, modern cities- Tokyo, Dubai, Las Vegas etc just don’t appeal to me. I like old cities, but if you’ve seen one glass, steel and neon jungle you’ve seen them all imo.

I don’t like the kind of beaches where sunloungers are lined up like cars in a supermarket car park, and I don’t generally like resorts where all the restaurants have plastic porches and huge pictures of burgers and fried breakfasts. Although to be fair I have enjoyed holidays in that kind of place.

Generally I want either beautiful scenery or beautiful buildings. Both is better. And hot weather and comfortable outdoor swimming go a long way.

lisalocketlostherpocket · 14/05/2019 16:46

no particular desire anymore to visit anywhere in Britain outside of London

Well I guess if you like pollution and crowds...each to their own.

I've had to work there but I wouldn't choose to go for fun.

lisalocketlostherpocket · 14/05/2019 16:47

Anyone who says that Scotland is cold has clearly not been to Leeds in February...THAT is the coldest place on earth in the UK.

ChopinIn10Minuets · 14/05/2019 16:47

Ah, cross post; I see Russia gets a couple of mentions.Grin I'm not ruling out too much that doesn't feature on the FCO website but aside from the Pyramids, Egypt doesn't appeal.

I think Jaywick probably wins the thread.

crazyasafox · 14/05/2019 16:48

Australia.
