I knew people would come on here to say you hardly ever see spiders in Australia. Just knowing they are there is enough to put me off going. Plus a friend of mine who is also terrified of them had a tarantula size one land on her head. It's a wonder she didn't have a heart attack. So no I won't be visiting.

For me places like the Maldives, Barbados etc would just be too boring. They look beautiful but I hate sunbathing, don't do water sports (can't even swim) and would just be bored out of my mind.

A friend of mine has been to Barbados over 20 times but all she does is lie on the beach all day every day. She doesn't venture out of the compound!

Mrsjayy · 14/05/2019 09:29

I livein Scotland I love my country but holidaying here really isn't for everybody I don't think we should be getting overly offended I will say though it is Northern Britain not the artic we get "weather" like the rest of the Uk today sun is out tomorrow who knows

Ragwort · 14/05/2019 09:35

I wonder how many people have actually been to the places that they are totally dismissing as holiday options?

For years I was incredibly snobby about Turkey, I finally went & had a great holiday, back for my fifth year later this year. I go with a girlfriend and we have never been hassled or treated badly. I appreciate the government is not good but you can say that about many countries and the places we visit rely on tourism to help the economy.

I was equally dismissive about AI holidays and Eurocamp - until we had a child, having an only child it’s great to go to those sorts of resorts so that our DS met other children, he had a great time & DH & I enjoyed it far more than we imagined.

A long weekend in London or Birmingham is my idea of a good time, I live in a pretty, but quiet, tourist type area and love going to a city Grin ... and I have had weekends away in Bradford & Skegness, both enjoyable Grin.

shumway · 14/05/2019 09:43

I'd go anywhere. I'm not snobby.

kaytee87 · 14/05/2019 09:43

@Mrsjayy not offended in the slightest. Just think 'it's too cold' is a funny reason when the sun is currently splitting the sky.

DizzyPigeon · 14/05/2019 09:53

Are you implying that people that do have preferences are being 'snobby'?

Blueygreeneyes · 14/05/2019 09:56

Any Disney location, the Gulf States, Las Vegas

Mrsjayy · 14/05/2019 09:59

Yes kaytee too cold is daft I have my back door opened and the heat is rising as I said it is a uk country with weather Smile

justarandomtricycle · 14/05/2019 10:00

In the elbow?

Mrsjayy · 14/05/2019 10:05

I don't think I have the tolerance to go to Australia 24ish hours on a plane would drive me nuts!

ginghamtablecloths · 14/05/2019 10:08

India - hate the heat and the poverty must be very upsetting.

Any country where women are treated as third rate citizens - not allowed to drive, leave the house without a male escort, etc.

New York - ugly urban skyscrapers.

Las Vegas - gambling is a fool's game.

user1486131602 · 14/05/2019 10:12

Butlins, mainland Spain any campsite caravan or tent or monoglia

Fraxion · 14/05/2019 10:44

I don't think I have the tolerance to go to Australia 24ish hours on a plane would drive me nuts!

That was the whole reason I was reluctant to go but I did and can honestly say the flights were really quite good. We did overnight flights both ways, slept on the long journeys and had no jet lag either side. One of the best holidays we have had and we've had many.

One place we've been to and highly unlikely to return is Barbados. At the time the cash for gold thing had just started there and the Commissioner of Police put out a statement warning about crime eg robbed for jewellery etc. There was a horrible undercurrent and we just didn't find the friendliness people rave about.

thecatsthecats · 14/05/2019 10:56

That's the only reason I'd say I wouldn't visit Australia and New Zealand, as a 12 hour flight is my max!

We did a great combined holiday of Thailand and New Zealand which cut the travel and the jet lag in two. Jetlag on the return was a bitch, but you could always cut it up again.

soulrunner · 14/05/2019 10:57

I’d go to most places in theory, but time and money being finite there are places i’ll probably never go because I’d prioritise other places and experiences. I’ll admit I’m not a fan of city breaks ( not into churches or old buildings, like art museums but not enough to centre a holiday around them) so quite possible that I’ll die without having seen Rome, Venice or Barcelona because I kept opting to go skiing or hike/run/bike around national parks instead Basically I have a shortish list of bucket list places ( Sri Lanka, NZ, Tasmania, Yosemite, Boulder, Napa Valley), a short list of “would not go”, a list of ‘repeaters’ ( places I’ve been and want to go back) and everywhere else I’m a bit ambivalent about. I might go, depending on who asked, but I probably wouldn’t initiate it.

DirtyDennis · 14/05/2019 10:58

Gulf States
Australia
New Zealand
USA

TheRedBarrows · 14/05/2019 11:06

"Did any ever explain what's wrong with the Maldives?"

"Yes. There's a comment on the fact that one of the islands is used as a dump for the detritus that tourism has created."

Not to mention that the Human Rights issue is subject to much comment from Amnesty www.amnesty.org/en/countries/asia-and-the-pacific/maldives/report-maldives/ and the government specifically discourages any contact between tourists, visitors and the residents of the main residential islands. The legal system is based in Sharia law.

To be fair there do seem to be attempts to improve democracy but not sure is has had much lasting effect yet.

CabbageHippy · 14/05/2019 11:08

@TheoriginalLEM - I came back from Las Vegas last week & had the most amazing time. It had so much more than we imagined

Buddywoo · 14/05/2019 11:08

Mainland Spain is stunningly beautiful and diverse. Apart from the well known rough resorts there are many lovely, low rise seaside places. Just go inland for 10 minutes or so for tranquil villages, vine fields, olive groves and citrus groves. Away from the mediterranean the scenery is completely different. My husband is in Galicia at the moment in the north. He says the countryside is like Ireland but with warm sun. Another part of the north is like Switzerland with chalets and mountains. Don't judge the country by Benidorm and the Costa del Sol.

TheRedBarrows · 14/05/2019 11:10

Those writing off the whole of the Middle East, have you heard of Jordan, offering Petra, the wadis, the history, the human rights status that is the most respected in the ME?

ForalltheSaints · 14/05/2019 11:14

Turkey while Erdogan is dictator.
Anywhere if the only realistic travel option is Ryanair.
Hull.

PtarmiganBiscuit · 14/05/2019 11:15

I won't go on a holiday where I wouldn't feel safe being out and about exploring on my own.

Unless it was Iran, I'd love to go to Iran.

Also get really bored on beach holidays, all inclusive and villas in the middle of nowhere where you have to drive to do anything.

I like poking around cities, hiking, eating different food, politics, economics and history.

Disfordarkchocolate · 14/05/2019 11:17

Petra is my fantasy destination @TheRedBarrows, it looked very busy on Travel Man, are there quieter times to go?

ShanghaiDiva · 14/05/2019 11:17

Maldives - I don't want to snorkel and dive and being on a tiny island would drive me nuts. Not keen to return to India as it's quite hard work as a holiday destination imo.
Love Western Australia.

Fooferella · 14/05/2019 11:17

Brazil - scarily crime ridden and corrupt
Russia and satellite states - ditto
the Middle East - too hot and terrible human rights record
Any AI, holiday club type resort doesn't matter where it is.
Eurocamp - noisy, full of brits, wedged in like sardines, d*heads reserving pool chairs at the crack of dawn.
London - expensive, dirty, stressful
