Gulf states.
Blackpool.
Anywhere hot but nothing else.
Disney/theme parks / Florida.
Cruises - I'm not keen on cross channel ferries and wouldn't be able to sleep.

I love Australia and I've been 3 times.

People saying Blackpool can be posh... Can you link to anything posh in Blackpool?

LOL a few years ago someone from Blackpool tourist board was on the radio and asked something similar, she replied that they now had the largest glitter ballin Europe.

Blackpool is fine for a stag/hen weekend but not for a holiday IMHO.

groovergirl

A friend of mine is a sign language interpreter, a couple of Deaf people she know asked her to go with them to Australia to interpret, it would have been a free 6 week trip, she declined because of spiders.

I don't think I have ever seen a spider in Aus,certainly not as many as I see in my home.

People who say Cornwall is great, beautiful scenery etc obviously haven’t been when I have.

I have been 3times to Cornwall. In the Summer
Each time it has poured down. Not just a shower but rained for days. The last time I was persuaded to go was 15 years ago.

People telling me it was going to be sunny and how they were going to show me the gorgeous landscape.

It rained everyday. It was shrouded in fog so badly that someone couldn’t see the road and drove off it almost driving off a cliff edge.
And I was looked on like I had 2 heads when I asked if the pub/restaurant did anything that didn’t contain meat.
Lived on chips all week.
It might have changed food wise in the last 15 years but life is too short to give somewhere a 4th chance.

I am wondering how hot Scotland is? Again I have been once.

Froze my arse off. If you take away booze and shopping which I don’t like and add in the fact Dp doesn’t like walking then there didn’t seem to be anything left.

Oh dear, speechless here.

What’s wrong with the Maldives? Looks beautiful

My issue with the Maldives or Seychelles or similar is that yes they are beautiful and the beaches are amazing but that's all tehre is to do on many of the islands. Beach, snorkel, sunbathe. That's it. I'd be bored.

yabadabadontdoit · 14/05/2019 08:22

Those writing off the whole of Spain, and the whole of France, why? How can a whole, huge, country upset you? Can kind of understand people not wanting to go to more different cultures, though they’re writing off some of the most beautiful places in the world IMO but can’t understand how the whole of France or the whole of Spain can be so terrible?

Lordamighty · 14/05/2019 08:23

Morfa Nefyn, some of the rudest people I have ever come across. I wouldn’t go back there for a free holiday.

ssd · 14/05/2019 08:25

Did any ever explain what's wrong with the Maldives?

yabadabadontdoit · 14/05/2019 08:26

And I’ve got sunburnt in March in Scotland, and spent New Year in Edinburgh without getting chilblains

StillCoughingandLaughing · 14/05/2019 08:28

Three posts up.

VapeVamp12 · 14/05/2019 08:28

Morocco - my parents went last year and my Dad came home and got sicker and sicker. His blood tests revealed 4 types of bug including salmonella and listeria.

Austrailia
Thailand
Africa

Sad to see the UK on here. Yes, the weather can be unpredictable, but we have a higher concentration of beautiful scenery, historic sites and places of interest than most (& I don't mean Pontins, Blackpool etc!). Many of the sunny destinations have little to see or do away from the pool/beach or, if they do, it's far too hot to enjoy them (I hate too much heat) - Mexico is a good example of this.

I know people who regularly go abroad but have hardly seen anything of their own country. We've had some great trips in the UK and not much rain at all! Northumberland & Devon amongst my faves.

ssd · 14/05/2019 08:29

What, that it's boring? Confused

DizzyPigeon · 14/05/2019 08:30

Did any ever explain what's wrong with the Maldives?

Yes. There's a comment on the fact that one of the islands is used as a dump for the detritus that tourism has created.

Tip: click 'show all messages'. Then use the find function in your browser to search for 'maldives'.

Oliversmumsarmy · 14/05/2019 08:32

kaytee87 I think everywhere in the UK people were in paddling pools last summer

I come from up North (near Scotland)
People have different perceptions about the heat of the place they are in.

I grew up rarely taking a cardigan off. Freezing through summer as my mother would insist I wore a summer dress and bare legs because it was beautiful weather.

To her and the people around me it was lovely weather. To me it was cold.

Why I don’t like Blackpool. Holidayed there more than once growing up and remember distinctly the waves crashing over the promenade as we sheltered in one of the glass covered seating areas, freezing to death waiting until it was time to go back to our boarding house.

Too many unhappy memories.

One of the reasons I moved down to London was because I could actually take my cardigan off and still feel warm.

Because they have only visited the usual spots
Spain is a huge country and the vast majority of Spaniards have never set a foot on some of those tourist spots.
I hadn't even heard of Magaluf until I came here. My DH used to go to the typical spots as a child and was not keen, until I showed him a side of Spain he had never seen.
Same with France, absolutely amazing if you know where to go or get lost.

ChodeofChodeHall · 14/05/2019 08:43

People always say Romania on these threads, but never seem to be able to come up with a reason why, except that they saw a sad new story with bald orphans in the 1980s.

feesh · 14/05/2019 08:47

I live in Dubai and am quite shocked at the level of prejudice on here, especially for women’s rights.

That said, I do have some prejudices of my own! I really want to want to go to India, but I just don’t fancy it - I will force myself to go there one day though. I’m an environmental scientist and seeing nature is what motivates me, and there’s plenty of that to see in India.

I’d like to see Pakistan, as have seen some amazing photos of the wild scenery there, but again it will probably never be top of my list.

I don’t really fancy the North African Arab states (Tunisia, Morocco etc) so they’re never going to be top of my list.

I’m hungry to travel anywhere else though! Places we would never have thought of going 10 years ago are now becoming genuinely exciting tourist propositions and I’m sure the list will keep growing.

I'm as travel happy as they come, but I hate arguments like this.

The world is full of beautiful places, and if someone doesn't get a good 'vibe' off somewhere, or just doesn't like that particular culture for ANY reason they have the whole rest of the blooming planet to enjoy. There's nothing wrong with not finding places beautiful or interesting, or finding them beautiful, but not beautiful enough to overcome the things they don't like.

(Incidentally, just come back from Croatia having enjoyed myself, but a bit underwhelmed after everyone I spoke to absolutely RAVING about how wonderful they found it. I preferred Bosnia.)

I do agree though that writing off 'Muslim' countries is just as bad as if they wrote off 'black' countries.

Mrsjayy · 14/05/2019 08:55

Anywhere that says stay in resort Domincan repulic, mexico. Etc

FlyingElbows · 14/05/2019 08:57

How hot is Scotland? Less hot than Africa and more hot than the Arctic. Today it's very pleasant. Come. Don't come. It's fine, we're not bothered either way.

Thertruthisoutwhere · 14/05/2019 09:13

Why would you write off the whole of Africa? There are some wonderful countries, people and landscapes, cradle of humanity and all that

There's no country (obvs ommiting war zones/places FO advise against) I wouldnt visit but i dont love massive mega cities so would prefer to prioritise smaller locations.

Those saying all arab states have totally overlooked Oman which is EPIC, really lovely people and not dubai-ish at all.

MoonstoneMagic · 14/05/2019 09:18

Anyone writing off Scotland is deluded. It is stunningly beautiful and huge tracts of the country are unspoilt. If you make weather a prerequisite you're missing out. The weather is not always awful - I have swum in Lochs in September and in April it is often glorious.

Cornwall is beautiful but it does rain a lot. However, even in less than ideal weather it is still breathtaking. It's a shame about all the tourists though.

I have been to Morrocco and loved it. You have to be careful where you eat though.

What I can't stand is artificiality - man made things and manufactured entertainment. That's why the idea of a cruise fills me with horror. Tiny little bedrooms and constant thumping noise, people fighting for space, queuing for food, and the horrendous environmental impact.

Asta19 · 14/05/2019 09:27

I wouldn't judge any country I haven't been to. I love Japan, I've been several times now but yes it is a long flight. That's the only reason I'd say I wouldn't visit Australia and New Zealand, as a 12 hour flight is my max! I couldn't do 24, even with a stopover. It's more "types" of holidays I wouldn't do. So I wouldn't do any kind of beach holiday anywhere (I'd get too bored). I don't mind "roughing" it but my own room/bathroom is a must (even if it's a bit grotty) so no hostels. I didn't like New York so wouldn't go back there. Dubai I think of as just being for shopping so that's why it wouldn't appeal to me. But most other places I'd try. Went to Egypt with my DD, but we had a male guide so no one hassled us.

In my mind I class UK places as "short breaks" rather than full blown holidays. But maybe that's as I've never had a "proper" holiday in the UK. Just long weekends etc. Same is true for much of Europe for me now. Tends to be a short break and holidays are somewhere further afield.
