So many here saying Dubai and I’ve always felt the same, but can anyone defend it? What’s the appeal of it? Is it literally just for the luxury hotels, luxury shopping and hot temperatures? Is there anything cultural to go and see?

Even the super touristy naff resorts in Spain usually have a few “cultural” or scenic day trips available too like old churches, caves, cable cars up mountains with nice views, old town squares etc. Does Dubai have any of this?

I am more than happy to go to any of the destinations mentioned here, I have actually been to a number of them and found them interesting. I love viewing different landscapes cultures, ways of life. The only place I would have to consider twice would be parts of France, the sheer level of racism I have experienced was awful, but then again I wouldn't exclude the place either because there are also lovely people and its a Country steeped in gorgeous places to go

Lalotai47 · 14/05/2019 07:22

Dubai
Turkey

mizu · 14/05/2019 07:29

sickofphd agree, so many 'views' on here that are so generalised. The Jerusalem one Shock too

I would love to go back to Oman and Japan both countries I have lived in.

Not interested in:

Any all inclusive holiday.

soulrunner · 14/05/2019 07:32

zurisee there are some nice mosques- quite a spectacular one in Abu Dhabi and a more educational tour in Dubai. The desert is beautiful and you can go out there on various tours, or camp overnight, see falconry etc. The old town of Dubai near the creek where the gold and spice souks are is also interesting. And from a geo-political perspective, if you consider where Dubai is and its direction relative to its neighbours, it’s remarkable in itself. There’s a pretty good aquarium in the Dubai Mall and the huge dinosaur skeleton plus the fountains which are lovely. One of the world’s tallest buildings. Two really good water parks. Sailing and windsurfing if the wind’s right. There’s a lot to do other than shop. It doesn’t have thousand year old buildings for obvious reasons but it’s not like you just sit on your sun lounger twiddling your thumbs.

Thailand
China
All of Africa, have been many times in the past
Malta - killing migrating birds
Dubai - immigrants building it kept in terrible conditions and often not paid

ImpracticalCape · 14/05/2019 07:41

A cruise, I can't imagine anything more Trashy and dull (not to mention the appalling environmental impact)
Disney or any other theme park
Anything with a 'kids club'
Anywhere where there's a 'strip'
Anywhere the objective of every day is to get up, reserve sun lounger, eat egg and bacon, sit on lounger round pool, egg and chips for lunch, sit on lounger, eat buffet dinner, watch the 'turn'.

Anywhere with piped music.
Any 'luxury' resort somewhere naturally beautiful e.g Caribbean, Maldives
Anywhere where the concept of ethical and responsible tourism is turned on its head e.g Maldives or the local population are effectively locked out e.g some places in Goa, Caribbean
Any chain hotel in a naturally beautiful location e.g Hilton Fiji, Marriott Grenada
Anywhere with organised entertainment etcetcetc.

Australia is fabulous. We had three holidays there, all taken in July because of British school terms. Cairns was a bit warm for me at that time of year, but otherwise it was fine - in fact it was a bit cold in Melbourne and along the Great Ocean Road.
Places I don't want to go: Dubai, any package/all inclusive holiday. Spain, Turkey, or any beach holiday.

terriblyoriginalusername · 14/05/2019 07:43

People dismissing the entire continent of Africa, please explain to me why?!? In the ONE single African country where I live you could experience; high temperatures, or cool temperatures, beach holiday, or mountain climbing, cities, safaris, scuba diving, all inclusive 5 star resorts, or cheap camping in stunning locations, posh shopping malls with upmarket western restaurants, or fresh mangoes, maize and groundnuts by the roadside, lakes, rivers, amazing scenery... you hate ALL of these things?!

Ladymargarethall · 14/05/2019 07:43

Impractical Cape me too. Especially cruises, which always sound like holiday camps on water.

Outofinspiration · 14/05/2019 07:44

Dubai.

It looks like such a shit hole.

Outofinspiration · 14/05/2019 07:46

Cruises are brilliant! You get to wake up and get off in a different place every day without packing and unpacking a single thing!

Don't think I would bother with a Carribean cruise but around the med its a great way to see loads of different places all in one go.

Disfordarkchocolate · 14/05/2019 07:47

Gulf states too, nothing relaxing about a holiday where you have to worry about so much normal activity.

Areas of the middle east where women get harassed routinely.

Disfordarkchocolate · 14/05/2019 07:52

That was our main criteria for our first holiday abroad last year @itsstillgood. So, we went to Copenhagen and there was a heat wave. All the Danes looked cool, tanned and fit, I looked like a sweaty red blob. Great place though.

Fraxion · 14/05/2019 07:53

Thailand comes second- absolute sht hole*

Wow. I don't know where you went but we love Thailand. A lot of people have said Maldives, don't know if they have been but it's our favourite destination. Not long back from Australia and I'm yet to see a spider, even in the back of beyond.

Outofinspiration so people tell me, but 'I've been to Rome' when you are dropped off in the morning and are collected at night is not the same as actually staying there.

Snugglepiggy · 14/05/2019 07:56

The Maldives.Having seen the Simon Reeves series where it showed how one of the 'paradise' islands is basically a toxic waste dump for all the detritus from tourism there's no way I could sit on a sun lounger sipping cocktails and relax.
Dubai for similar reasons after a documentary about the conditions the workers who build the luxury hotels etc are forced to work and live in.
Any cruise.Just doesn't appeal and especially the massive ships.

Gwenhwyfar · 14/05/2019 07:59

I think Dublin is great, apart from the weather. What's the problem people have with it?

Fraxion · 14/05/2019 08:00

at some of the generalising and ignorance on this thread. Dismiss a country if you want but a whole continent??

Quite amazing really!

I was holding my breath waiting for someone to say Scotland and they did. It's too cold apparently 😂. We are having glorious weather right now.

Gwenhwyfar · 14/05/2019 08:01

"The only place I would have to consider twice would be parts of France, the sheer level of racism I have experienced was awful"

Where in France was this?
I suppose the worst reputation for racism would be in the southern cities?

sprinkleofsunshine · 14/05/2019 08:02

I'd like to see most places once. I have some places that don't really interest me - Amsterdam, the canaries, some of Eastern Europe but I probably wouldn't pass up an opportunity to visit. I'd be less inclined to visit places like North Africa currently.

Agree with PP about turkey I reluctantly booked as a broke student as it was the cheapest deal, was not thinking it would be much but was pleasantly surprised! Would return but can't get dh on board!

Gwenhwyfar · 14/05/2019 08:03

"I was holding my breath waiting for someone to say Scotland and they did. It's too cold apparently 😂. We are having glorious weather right now."

To be honest, I'm put off by the idea of going on holiday somewhere colder than where I live. Dulin in the summer was pretty miserable in weather terms.
I really want to see Scotland, but I have ethical issues about flying when there's no sea, train is too expensive and coach would be too long. Also, I want to go to Edinburgh, but have been told not to go during the festival, but that takes up quite a lot of the summer.

DonkeyHohtay · 14/05/2019 08:04

Anywhere which has as its main marketing "full English breakfasts", bars showing British football matches and loud bars selling cheap booze to tourists who are only there because it's cheap.

Benidorm, Magaluf, Blackpool, Faliraki. Never in a million years.

kaytee87 · 14/05/2019 08:05

Scotland is just too cold

Grin last summer we were in the paddling pool most days and just yesterday in the garden in shorts and T-shirt's.

I always think people on these threads sound so ignorant.
