Any where with temperatures regularly above 25C. I really, really hate being hot.

groovergirl · 14/05/2019 03:56

AmICrazy, I agree that Devon and Cornwall are stunning -- and I'm Australian, so travelled a long way to get there! Penzance and Plymouth are great for city walks. Wonderful hiking and beaches, and I got to visit artist Barbara Hepworth's former home and meet the descendents of her pussycats, one of whom escorted me around the house Smile

Bit sad to see Australia on so many people's lists. If you can endure the long flight (as I did to get to UK), at least come to Melbs. Awesome music, arts and food scene, scenic hiking in the Dandenongs, and interesting cafes and bars where we love to chat to random strangers from faraway places. Sydney is amazing for beaches, harbour walks and general beauty; on Sundays you can ride the harbour ferries and go anywhere on public transport in NSW all day for $2.60. If you go north, see Litchfield NP and Uluru in NT. Indigenous Australians are prominent culturally, politically and in the media; much to do to rectify wrongs to them, but we are trying. Racism survives in pockets but is considered very uncool.

Re spiders, I catch them in a cup and put them outside.

Come on down!

Bali & Indonesia in general.

South East Asian and Middle Eastern countries just sound like too much effort: hot, humid, hassling sales people (although the food would be lovely).

Any cruise ship: my idea of personal hell.

(As an Australian I'm a bit surprised that Australia is getting so much hate though)

lovelyupnorth · 14/05/2019 05:16

Anywhere where Brit’s abroad mass
Any AI
any large hotel in summer
Any campsite with a club
Any campsite with EHU
Disney
Any “Resort” in season.
Anywhere where reserving a sun lounger is a thing.

Been to a number of places mentioned that would happily visit again.

cloudymelonade · 14/05/2019 06:00

Florida, I don't see the appeal

ItsalmostSummer · 14/05/2019 06:05

Nowhere is off limits. I just want a holiday (desperate / not picky here) Grin

TheRedBarrows · 14/05/2019 06:06

“All these people saying Maldives. What’s wrong with the Maldives? Looks beautiful!”

Look up the government and environmental impact.

This list:

Disney

Anywhere where reserving a sun lounger is a thing. ”
And
A Cruise ship
Dubai

Iran
Iraq
Afghanistan
Pakistan
Russia
Australia

@Passthecake30 why not Germany. I know each to their own, but it is one of the loveliest countries I have lived in.

Ladymargarethall · 14/05/2019 06:16

Haven. We once camped on a site in Yorkshire which entitled us to go up the road to the Haven site for breakfast. We felt completely out of place.

Iamclearlyamug · 14/05/2019 06:18

@capara totally agree!

I imagine it's to do with the thought of terrorism and the border with Syria. What people are blithely unaware of is that Turkey is a huge country and the distance from the tourist resorts like fethiye and bodrum are the same distance from Syria as travelling from London to Madrid!

Also no terrorist attacks since New Year 2017 - we've had attacks on our doorstep far more recently than that!

Hot weather, beautiful scenery, cultural magnificence, friendly welcoming people, plus incredibly cheap - really don't know what more anyone could ask

maddiemookins16mum · 14/05/2019 06:22

Turkey
Dubai
North Africa

floraloctopus · 14/05/2019 06:39

@muchtoomuchtodo

Yes, I've been to Barry Island. It is a lovely beach but it's just too busy, I prefer quieter places. I've been there for work a couple of times in the last few years.

DizzyPigeon · 14/05/2019 06:40

My one big takeaway from this thread is not to pay any attention to what other people think of other places in the world when deciding where to go. (Especially if they say Jerusalem is a shit hole. I spent 3 months there and loved it).

My list.

Birmingham and most other British cities (there are a few notable exceptions).
Probably any area currently in the midst of conflict.
The Arctic/Antarctic.
Anywhere that is just made up of hotels and beaches with nothing or little of interest alongside. Totally OK with beach holidays but in a place that has a bit more to offer reasonably close by.

Hollowvictory · 14/05/2019 06:41

People saying Blackpool can be posh... Can you link to anything posh in Blackpool?

floraloctopus · 14/05/2019 06:42

Mine too. This thread won't change my view about places not to go to - a pp said the Arctic and Antarctica but I've been to both and they are amazing.

Hollowvictory · 14/05/2019 06:42

Oh god yes Birmingham. I actually have been there for a weekend. Never again.

As a child we went to Arran and I hated it. I'd love it now though.

herecomestherainagain2 · 14/05/2019 06:43

@BuildBuildings

I went with my husband there was a small amount of general hassling - in the souk and can I show the way to your hotel please but nothing more than that.

That surprised me!

Hollowvictory · 14/05/2019 06:43

Places can be 'amazing' in a bad way as well as a good way.

nrpmum · 14/05/2019 06:46

@DizzyPigeon completely agree.

echt · 14/05/2019 06:48

I think part of the problem with Australia is the surprisingly common perception that everything in Australia is a lot nearer to the next bit than it actually is, that you can "do" Australia in three weeks.

Easily the nicest way is to book a chunk of a holiday and, dare I say it, have a base from which you can go out on jaunts for a number of days. What this usually means is staying with a friend/relation and entails its own set of possible problems.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/05/2019 06:50

Blondequeenie, being able to 'hold a baby lion' is about the last thing to attract me. Lion cubs belong with their mothers, it's appalling for them to be used as cutesy attractions for tourists. How do you know they haven't been sedated for the purpose? I have heard of this happening in similar scenarios in the US - where incidentally it's legal and apparently not at all unusual to de-claw domestic cats, so that they won't scratch the furniture.

ChodeofChodeHall · 14/05/2019 06:50

Dubai

frumpety · 14/05/2019 07:00

Blackpool, sorry, the things it is popular for are not things I want to spend my free time doing. However I do think it is very good at what it does and the sculpture stuff on the front was nice.

There are certain parts of Africa I wouldn't travel to at the moment.

Other than that and places the government advises against travelling to, I would probably give anywhere a go if someone else was paying Wink

lovelyupnorth · 14/05/2019 07:02

There’s a few posh places in Blackpool not many mins

No 1 south beach
The BVD
Big blue

Couple of other small 5 star places.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/05/2019 07:06

Sad to say, but IMO Egypt is fine - as long as you have a bloke with you. Once stayed in Luxor with dh, adult dds and my elderly mother. It was only if we went out without dh that we were hassled. And having lived in Arab countries we were well aware of the need to dress appropriately.
Valley of the Kings was truly wonderful, though - as long as you don't do too much at once and get 'tombed out' - as an American tourist once put it.
