WIBU to ice over the burnt top?

We're having a baking competition at work this week & I've made a lemon sponge but I forgot about it while I was pegging washing out.

If I ice the top will it still taste burnt or should I try scraping it off?!

It will taste burnt.

I'd make another one.

Definitely scrape it off. You will taste burntness otherwise! Then do two layers of icing, as the first will mix with all the loose crumbs.

Greeborising · 13/05/2019 12:44

I’d scrape it off tbh.
The burnt flavour will be obvious otherwise!

eosmum · 13/05/2019 12:45

Either scrape it off or do it again. You will be able to taste the burnt part.

steff13 · 13/05/2019 12:45

Slice it off. If the inside is ok, ice it. If not, you'll have to make a new one.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 13/05/2019 12:46

Yup, make another, or slice the burnt bit off, it will taste bitter

HBStowe · 13/05/2019 12:49

Steps to salvage:

  1. Cut off the burnt top
  2. Is it dry? If so, make up a lemon simple syrup (loads of recipes online) and brush over to moisten. Add a little at a time to judge how much you need overall.
  3. Ice with a thin all over layer, then refrigerate
  4. Ice with a thicker layer

It will be grand!

Purpleartichoke · 13/05/2019 13:17

Cut off the burnt top. I regularly level my cakes (aka cut the top off) anyway. If you don’t remove the burnt section it will definitely not taste good.

Nquartz · 13/05/2019 13:23

I've managed to slice the burnt bits off & it looks ok underneath. Thank goodness because this is already the second one I've made & can't face making a third.

Next time I'll decline baking, I think, I don't do well under pressure Grin

Is the bottom any better? I’d slice the burnt top off and then turn it upside down to ice if the other end is a bit less burnt!

BertrandRussell · 13/05/2019 13:27

Has someone said you”ll need to ice it twice because the first coat will be full of crumbs.

BabyDarlingDollfaceHoney · 13/05/2019 13:49

It'll possibly be dry inside... I'd make another for the compeiand eat that one at home!!

BabyDarlingDollfaceHoney · 13/05/2019 13:50

Sorry *competition and eat

MrsDrudge · 13/05/2019 13:53

Turn it upside down before you ice it, then you can ice a smooth surface and avoid getting lots of crumbs in the icing

Nquartz · 13/05/2019 14:28

I think it's good enough for work, it'll have to be because I can't face making a third!

I will turn it over to ice though Smile
