When used as a filling holder?!

I’m in the west mids and my colleagues (from the north west and east mids) wet themselves every time I order a sandwich for lunch and call it a bap, as in ‘I’m having bacon baps!’

Everyone I know round here calls them baps...

I remember going into a bakers when I first moved to London with my friend and we asked for some barm cakes and the shop assistant looked at us like we were from the moon. She had no clue, we were saying you know, barm cakes, baps, batch, cob. Eventually we got to a word she understood, roll. That was the only word she had ever come across to describe them Grin

skybluee · 12/05/2019 13:03

It depends what type of bread it is. If it is thin and sliced, out of a loaf. If it's round and split into two, but they are two bits that are curved.

Ellie56 · 12/05/2019 13:03

A bap is a common word in the UK for a breast.

Yep .We always snigger when we go past the sandwich van advertising "Bev's Baps."

We call them rolls. But a lot of people round here (East Mids) call them cobs. When I was in Lancashire, everyone called them barm cakes.

Whereistheglove · 12/05/2019 13:20

Pieces.

NaToth · 12/05/2019 13:45

The round thing is a batch. Rolls are long.

A tea cake has slice and dried fruit and is best toasted and buttered.

AgentProvocateur · 12/05/2019 13:47

Your baps are your boobs!

DontCallMeBaby · 12/05/2019 13:52

Roll by default. But a sausage bap has the benefit of distinguishing a sausage in a roll from a sausage roll.

zukiecat · 12/05/2019 13:53

A filling between two slices of bread is a sandwich

A soft bread roll is a softie here in Aberdeen/shire

A roll is an Aberdeen delicacy, also called a rowie or a butterie

lotusbell · 12/05/2019 13:55

A bacon barm, a chip barm or a butty if it's a sandwich. Baps are boobs Grin

TooManyPaws · 12/05/2019 13:56

I hate the crusty rolls that shatter when you bite or cut them. As a kid we always had softies which were a soft top roll when making sandwiches. Never called a 'morning roll' as that was a posh name for butteries/rowies; sadly I've never had a decent one of those since coming south to the central belt. I need a mail order from an Aberdeen baker. 😢

emwithme · 12/05/2019 13:57

It's a batch.

Two slices of bread = sandwich. Unless it contains chips, when it's a butty or a fried egg, when it's a banjo.

RattyTat · 12/05/2019 13:58

A roll.(Scotland)

NannyRed · 12/05/2019 14:02

Yawn.
This has been done to death.
Batch
Bap.
Barm.
Stottie.
Roll.
Cob.
Bun.

Zzzzzz,

jp237 · 12/05/2019 14:03

In Glasgow, a sandwich is often referred to as a piece.

RattyTat · 12/05/2019 14:09

That's ok, we can do it again. No one is forcing you to read it.

MatchSetPoint · 12/05/2019 14:15

Sandwiches if it’s bread, barm if it’s on a barmcake.

Chouetted · 12/05/2019 14:19

Teacake.

The ones with fruit in are fruit teacakes.

Easy, and logical.

I've been on here years and haven't seen this conversation before. It doesn't have to be original. It's aibu!

"Oh not another my husband is leaving me for a younger woman thread - yawn" Hmm.

MumW · 12/05/2019 14:26

If it's between two slices of bread it is definitely a bacon sarnie.
In a roll, either just a bacon roll or a bacon bap. Although, I tend to think of baps as larger rolls, shaped more like a burger bun but larger.

Sockworkshop · 12/05/2019 14:31

Sliced bread with filling-sandwich
One slice of bread filling on top-open sandwich
Round -roll( soft roll, crusty roll etc)
Long -hotdog bun
Soft,white,large and floury -bap
Cob -smallish round granary bread ,usually served with soup.
Artisan-hipster and over priced shite Grin

suckonthatmaureen · 12/05/2019 14:32

Sandwich made with bread and cold fillings = butty
Sandwich with hot fillings = toastie
Hot fillings & giant bread roll = bin lid
Cold fillings and soft bread roll = roll
Cold fillings and crusty roll = cob
I'm from the east midland, but live in the north west - things get confusing 😂

my2bundles · 12/05/2019 14:39

Every Bread type is a sandwich, unless it's filled with bacon or chips then it's a butty.

ReganSomerset · 12/05/2019 14:43

A sandwich is a sandwich.

A bap or cob is a roll.

ilovepixie · 12/05/2019 14:46

A bap is a bread roll.
A sandwich is a piece!
