So my DS was at nursery for 7hrs today and they didn’t change his nappy once.
I know for a fact it was the same one as it was a different brand to what was in his bag. I have emailed, been promised feedback Monday. Wwud?

@Copperandtod chill! DS will often go around 5 hours without a change! We are in no way negligent. He never has nappy rash. He never complains. Yeesh.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 10/05/2019 22:44

@Copperandtod West do you do overnight?

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 10/05/2019 22:44

What...

Copperandtod · 10/05/2019 22:45

Sleep

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 10/05/2019 22:48

@Copperandtod, I'm asking a genuine question, I'm fastidious about DS' nappies during the day but there's no way I'm waking him to change him, so we've found a nappy that keeps him dry over night. What do you do/have you done in the past?

Startyeyed · 10/05/2019 22:52

In my experience the nursery's my children have gone to have changed them 4 hourly. A change from the norm due to being short staffed would concern me / it would highlight that there could be changes due to lack of staff that would not be acceptable for me. I'm guessing that your son has Down syndrome from your username and I can understand from that you will feel even more protective of him. I think you should move nursery if you have any doubt of their care for him.
FWIW At home if there isn't a stool or the nappy isn't bulging then I'll leave it 5,6,7 even 8 hours. My children have never had nappy rash. Nappies are not designed to be changed as soon as they're wet - the moisture is drawn away from their skin.

Copperandtod · 10/05/2019 22:54

At 2 my children didn’t wear nappies to bed so no need to change them. They were dry during the night before that. Leaving a nappy on for 7 hours during the night is not the same as leaving it during the day because you are busy or forget!!!

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 10/05/2019 23:04

I agree, I just wasn't clear that that was your position and thouht you might have some miracle stealth changing method! I couldn't leave DS in the same nappy for 7/8 hours when he's been feeding/drinking etc it just seems mean, and potentially smelly

OohItsTheSoundOfThePolice · 10/05/2019 23:04

Surely 7 hours is 7 hours... day or night

whitehalleve · 10/05/2019 23:05

Oh I'd be so so angry about that.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 10/05/2019 23:06

Checked, NHS guidance is 6-8 nappy changes a day, so people changing every 7-8 hours are only using 3 maybe 4 a day half the recommended amount

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 10/05/2019 23:08

@OohItsTheSoundOfThePolice I don't think so, in seven hours during the day DS will have fed 2 or three times, he feeds once before bed and doesn't wake until morning. If there's more going in there is more coming out, so during the day a seven hour nappy will be wetter, heavier and smellier.

OohItsTheSoundOfThePolice · 10/05/2019 23:09

My daughter was only awake 7am - 7pm.., I would have had to change her every 2 hours to even get 6 in a day. Surely it would depend on the child and their age.

Copperandtod · 10/05/2019 23:11

I agree zippy

TheBubGrower · 10/05/2019 23:12

Ha glad to see copperandtod getting very judgemental again on another thread to do with nappies/ toileting 🤣 again with the "My children were toilet trained the moment they turned 2". Bravo.

It's not negligent for a parent to make the decision that a nappy doesn't need changing every couple of hours. I'm surprised by posters saying they change their nappies every 2 hours maximum! Unless there's good reason to change them that soon (eg poo) that's terrible for the environment! Modern nappies state on them that they can be worn for up to 12 hours so why change them unnecessarily, ie if the child is not uncomfortable and they don't get nappy rash? I wouldn't routinely change a nappy after as long as 7 hours but once in a while when not needed to be changed is hardly negligent. It's standard for nurseries to change them at regular intervals however so a whole day without a change seems very odd, but is probably just an oversight on one day. I'd monitor it for now. The not encouraging enough drinking though would really concern me

OohItsTheSoundOfThePolice · 10/05/2019 23:13

@ZippyBungleandGeorge I agree that if it were at the stage where it were heavy and smelly then yes of course that'd be too long. It definitely depends on the individual child however.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 10/05/2019 23:14

I do change DS at least every two hours, he's usually awake from 6:30am -7:30/8pm

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 10/05/2019 23:15

I think older toddlers who are eating more and drinking less could probably be less than that

OohItsTheSoundOfThePolice · 10/05/2019 23:16

@ZippyBungleandGeorge it's interesting how different people have different routines. I wouldn't routinely change a nappy unless needed, unless she'd had her bowels open I can't imagine it'd ever need changing that regularly. But different strokes for different folks.

Ginger1982 · 10/05/2019 23:19

DS is 2 and I can't see me changing him 6-8 tines a day! I find that overkill! But now I'm slightly concerned as I tend to only change DS if I think his nappy is full or is dirty and that might only be 3 or 4 times. It seems a bit wasteful changing more often though?

This has made me think...

Copperandtod · 10/05/2019 23:19

Not sure why it bothers you bub. Maybe you’re being judgmental

TheBubGrower · 10/05/2019 23:20

🤣 okay

Copperandtod · 10/05/2019 23:21

The point is OPs child has been left in a nappy for over 7 hours and has every reason to be concerned about the level of care her child is receiving

Xmasbaby11 · 10/05/2019 23:23

That's bad, I'm sorry op. I think our nursery said every 4 hours too whether they need it or not.

My two never needed frequent nappy changes past newborn age - they had one poo a day and were fine for 3 -4 hours. We used pampers and they were brilliant - no leaks past newborn age!

TheSheepofWallSt · 10/05/2019 23:25

@Ginger1982

No my DS is 2.5 and is changed (obviously) as soon as he poos, but otherwise, 3 -4 times a day. He’s often dry for 3 hours at a time so there’s no way I’m contributing to landfill for no reason other than “the nhs says”....
He never ever develops nappy rash at home.
At nursery though, where he is changed like clockwork 2-3 hourly... he has nappy rash probably once a month.

Don’t worry about it- some people can’t separate sensible from senseless...
