To think that while troll threads have changed over the years, the vast majority of threads on here are made up?

Years ago when mn was much smaller the troll threads were different because so many people became invested over such a long period of time. So e.g. we had the likes of judge flounce, trolls who claimed to be escaping abusive relationships, oliver’s Army and so on and those threads often ran for a good while before the troll was outed (usually on the thread itself).

But they were talking points precisely because they took so long to develop and because people developed relationships with the trolls either on or off the boards.

However, now we have far more (dare I say it) flippant threads pop up every single day most of which end up being deleted for being questionable and some which run and run but because mn is so big now the whole site doesn’t take on board the fact that almost all long-running threads in e.g. Aibu and chat are ultimately deleted.

I’m not entirely sure why people do it, but I do think that most threads on here are made up now, far more than are actually real, general debates not withstanding.

Maybe so. I wish I were a troll, tbh. My threads are painfully real. 🤷

FlyingElbows · 10/05/2019 21:02

Trolls these days just don't have the stamina. You can go from "I'm a bit suspicious" to decree absolute in about 3 hours on here. In the old days they made more effort.

All hail the poo troll 💩

BertieBotts · 10/05/2019 21:11

Nah, I don't think the majority are. The majority are quite mundane really. I mean who is going to bother to troll over "How do you get your dog to stop digging up your flowerbeds?" or similar? Maybe the majority of the long, popular, fast-moving threads etc.

manicinsomniac · 10/05/2019 21:16

Probably quite a lot. I don't know about the majority. I read everything as fiction anyway so I don't care if it's by a troll or not. I think it's annoying when things get deleted. It's only entertainment, who cares if it's true?

Redglitter · 10/05/2019 21:21

Theres certainly a lot of trolls but I think to day the vast majority of threads are made up is stretching it a bit.

grumpyyetgorgeous · 10/05/2019 21:21

The ones that are quite dramatic and juicy and get 800 posts, yes I pretty much assume they're fake and read them as a work of fiction. Not the majority though, there are tons of threads about choosing primary schools, falling out with friends and how to lose weight that are painfully real. Grin

ShitAtScarbble · 10/05/2019 21:25

It's because of the incredibly tedious penchant for so-called CF threads lately. Fantasists and would be creative writers are vying to outdo one another at our expense.

Buttons4me · 10/05/2019 21:38

I think lots are made up but can sound genuine as well I could not for the life of me believe the post about the rock being left at night was a troll I believed it was true especially as I had something similar happen to myself and the police are only interested if you have evidence.

oneforthepain · 10/05/2019 21:45

I'm not sure how much it matters?

Blondequeenie · 10/05/2019 21:48

Going by how rilled up users get on MN, I think some users may make up threads to stir the pot and get a laugh out of making other users annoyed! Thats my only theory.

iwunderwhy · 10/05/2019 21:59

I don't understand this obsession with trolls. As soon as anyone posts anything remotely controversial the troll allegations begin which may be completely incorrect. Sometimes its just a way to shut people down and its crap. If you want to debate, just debate..

Gertie75 · 10/05/2019 22:34

Are journalists classed as trolls?
I regularly get interested in threads and believe them only to find that they've been deleted and I never twig however there does seem to be a lot that appear to be started by journos or researchers.

fargo123 · 11/05/2019 09:26

There are some that I hope are the work of trolls as they're so bizarre and/or awful, or the OP is a complete doormat, but I'm pretty sure are real unfortunately.
