To ask if Sebastian is a very bourgeois name?

my OH really likes the name Sebastian and so did I but I’m beginning to have doubts as I’ve seen it used twice in pop culture recently to be scathing of the middle classes (most recently the Waitrose ad...ironic)

So - give me your honest opinions - do you feel as strongly about it as you do about Archie?!

A very good friend of mine from school was called Sebastian. He was lovely, not posh, lots of fun and honestly always happy. Sadly he died, however if we ever had another DS he would be called Sebastian after my friend.

hatemyhairhun · 10/05/2019 16:56

The only guy that I know with that name is Swedish, he isn’t particularly posh at all.

phoenixrosehere · 10/05/2019 16:57

It’s one of my son’s middle names.

I find this whole British class thing interesting. Brits seem to care whether a name depicts a certain class while in the US it’s more about if you think your child is going to be teased over it or can there be a horrible nickname about it.

Why care so much about class, especially when even in different parts what is considered posh, middle class, or working class differs? Kind of sounds like it puts unnecessary stress on choosing a name if you’re so worried about what class it sounds like.

NoHolidaysforyou · 10/05/2019 17:11

I don't think it's only the Brits who care though. I have seen many Americans roll their eyes at names like Crystal, Neveah, or Brandi and call them stripper names. Ayden/Jayden/Kayden/Zayden/etc also denotes a certain class in the States as well from what I've heard.

Ohgodwhyme · 10/05/2019 17:12

The lobster/crab thing from little mermaid is the only thing I think of

Bamb00 · 10/05/2019 17:15

@formerbabe my cats are called Sebastian and Rupert 😅

gamerwidow · 10/05/2019 17:17

I have a nephew called Sebastian and a nephew called Archie we are very much not middle class. In fact I'd go as far to say we are a bit common Grin.

Gatekeeper · 10/05/2019 17:18

bloody love Sebastian- my uncle was called this ..born in a pit village in 1910's..but generally known as Seba. Alos had a cousin around same time whose name was Jonty. Very working class pit village

OneStepSideways · 10/05/2019 17:18

I think it sounds pretentious and foppish

gamerwidow · 10/05/2019 17:19

p.s. we call our Sebastian 'Sea Bass'

lilabet2 · 10/05/2019 17:20

Yes but it's not a bad name.

Frouby · 10/05/2019 17:22

I have a 5 year old Sebastian, or Seb.

We are working class, northern and not in the slightest bit posh.

I love it, and have never had a negative comment about his name. He's the only one I know, never met another. Not common oop north. But not way out either.

Whisky2014 · 10/05/2019 17:24

I like it but the one I know is a lazy bastard at work so put me right off

SuziQ10 · 10/05/2019 17:38

I think it's a lovely name in theory.
But like you, would be put off the name by all the try hard middle class middle aged Waitrose Essentials buyers naming their sons Sebastian / Alfie / Isaac etc. Too try hard. It's a shame, it is a nice name.

helpmumof3 · 10/05/2019 17:38

My much younger cousin is a Sebastian, goes by Seb, which is also nice. We are half Spanish so it suits him and Seb is quite a cool name (I think)

I would of def used it for my son had it not already been taken !

Dieu · 10/05/2019 18:07

I really, really hate it.

Oxmama · 10/05/2019 18:12

@dieu don’t hold back 🤣🤣

At my comprehensive school in the 1980s, the name Sebastian (along with Henry, Hugo, Rupert etc) would have definitely attracted ridicule but things move on and nowadays it is just a name

I've come across a few little Sebs in recent years from very normal (not posh) families

formerbabe · 10/05/2019 19:07

@Bamb00

Ooooohhh, what stereotypical middle class cats Grin

Bamb00 · 10/05/2019 19:14

@formerbabe the regular beheading of mice and breaking into neighbours houses is almost landing them both asbos, so they aren't living up to their names!

phoenixrosehere · 10/05/2019 20:22

@NoHolidaysforyou

That sounds more like eye rolling because those are considered ethnic names vs class.

DoubleFunMum · 10/05/2019 20:30

Nope. Common as muck!

crispysausagerolls · 10/05/2019 20:59

I think it’s a fantastic name

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 10/05/2019 21:09

I loved it and suggested it to DP as a potential boy name who promptly started singing 'under the sea' and addressed me as 'Ariel' in a Jamaican accent for a whole evening.

Its a no go now.

Crappygilmore · 10/05/2019 21:26

I love the name Sebastian. I grew up with several Seb's and im from a devon town with a very very small MC minority. Go with what u like.
