To ask if Sebastian is a very bourgeois name?

my OH really likes the name Sebastian and so did I but I’m beginning to have doubts as I’ve seen it used twice in pop culture recently to be scathing of the middle classes (most recently the Waitrose ad...ironic)

So - give me your honest opinions - do you feel as strongly about it as you do about Archie?!

I like it.

The plural of Sebastian is Sebastians.

Curious2468 · 10/05/2019 14:58

Sebastian was my second favourite choice for my son.

Haz1516 · 10/05/2019 15:01

Becoming more popular. Overheard someone in the supermarket earlier (who was definitely not 'posh') saying she planned to call her soon to be born child it.

formerbabe · 10/05/2019 15:03

It's along the same lines as Rupert imo.

Typical posh but not upper class name.

ishouldbedoingsomework · 10/05/2019 15:04

I love Sebastian. And Tobias and Piers. DH vetoed though.

Jaxhog · 10/05/2019 15:04

I like the name! If you like it, use it. Who cares whether it's bourgeois or not?

Aquamarine1029 · 10/05/2019 15:09

I mostly like it, but at the same time I think it sounds a little fussy. If you love it you should use it.

HolesinTheSoles · 10/05/2019 15:11

It puts me in mind slightly of brides head revisited but if I was introduced to an actual baby Sebastian I wouldn't blink. If you choose anything but the most bland name someone will claim it's way too try hard/chavvy/middle class/hippy.

IamaBluebird · 10/05/2019 15:19

Makes me start singing little mermaid tunes . Nice name though Grin

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 10/05/2019 15:27

It's my worst boys name I hate it,think it sounds wet and pretentious sorry.

IhavetoD0something · 10/05/2019 15:29

It is yes. Achingly middle class. "Sebastian! Time for trumpet practice now!"

Zakana · 10/05/2019 15:31

The only Sebastian I have ever known was a huge lurcher of my best friends, who knowing I was nervous of him, used to jump up behind me when I was sat on their sofa, and grab hold of my ponytail with his not inconsiderable large pointy sharp teeth and proceeded to drag me round the house each time I visited lol! He couldn’t do it now, too much weight gain since my 20s, but my partner still regales people with the story when he sees them out walking their lurchers (we’re in a lurcher area). Therefore for me, that’s the only connotations the name Sebastian has! Not good ones, although my DP would disagree, still howls with laughter now......

NoHolidaysforyou · 10/05/2019 15:35

I love Sebastian and I would use Sebastian Paul as the full name.

I think it's versatile and pretty common now actually, I would not be surprised to see it on a child in middle or working class. It's like naming your child Arthur. It's a bit popular at the moment but I don't think that's a bad thing.

5foot5 · 10/05/2019 15:40

Do you know in all my 56 years I don't think I have ever met a Sebastian in real life. It sounds quite posh to me but I have nothing against the name.

Actually I don't think I have ever met an Archie either but I do quite like it.

TheWernethWife · 10/05/2019 15:57

I have a beautiful cat called Sebastian.

Agree. Along with Tobey. A good name for a Great Dane perhaps.

MirandaGoshawk · 10/05/2019 16:07

I really, really love the name Sebastian. DH vetoed it. It says someone who's a bit of a free spirit to me. What do you mean by bourgeois? Not chavvy? Middle class? What's wrong with that? (I know one Seb and he is lovely and so is his family.)

outvoid · 10/05/2019 16:09

I like it but DP went to a vairy fancy private school and knew a couple of Sebastian’s who were utter arsewipes so he vetoed it on that basis. I’ve never personally met a Sebastian and I teach so meet a variety of names.

JustLikeAPill · 10/05/2019 16:10

I love the name Sebastian. It's my cousin's name and he is posh though Grin

shockthemonkey · 10/05/2019 16:14

Agree with PP about Sebastian being absolutely fine in Spanish.

I think it's fine in English too. I only know the one Seb and he's bicultural Spanish-English and a great guy so I don't have any "terribly posh" associations with the name.

CustardCreamLover · 10/05/2019 16:20

What?! I've just named my baby boy Sebastian!! I don't know any Sebastian's and we liked it because it's pronounced the same in English and in my husband's language!! Please don't piss all over my baby's beautiful name!!

Mammylamb · 10/05/2019 16:26

DS is a Sebastian. I’m originally from a council estate, and my mum was horrified by me calling my son Sebastian.

I got the name from having a few colleagues named Seb (worked for a few European companies) and of course the Scottish indie band, Belle&Sebastian

Initially I listened to my mum and had a few other names planned: then when he was born, we decided that actually he was a Sebastian (even though he was briefly named something else for 10minutes)

Nearly 4 years later she is used to his name (we do mostly call him Seb or Sebbie for short though)

HerRoyalNotness · 10/05/2019 16:26

I have an 8yo Sebastian. He doesn’t play trumpet but his older brother does Wink

He loves his name and is always excited to meet another one, around here it’s Hispanic people with the name.

Clockwatchers · 10/05/2019 16:44

Seb/Sebastian is solidly middle class (if that is what you mean)

Archie on the other hand.......

Skittlesss · 10/05/2019 16:49

It’s not a horrible name. It’s quite nice, but definitely not upper class / posh. It’s more like one of those names that working class people use to make themselves sound posh.
