To find this so very strange - baby in Asda?

Was in Asda today with DS1 (3) and DD2 (8) picking up some stuff for DC4 due in a few months. We were in the baby aisle and this mother came in with a baby (looked around 8 weeks) in a carseat in the trolley. The carseat wasn't strapped into the trolley, just in the cart. Even worse I had a quick glance down at baby and though it had a blanket on (looked very thin and seethrough) it was obvious the poor thing was in just a nappy underneath. It has been 5 degrees celcius in this area today and absolutley pissing it down. Mum saw me looking and gave me a bit of a rude look to which I responded "Your baby is lovely." and she just nodded and picked up some nappies before walking off. I see her again a few times throughout the shop and it bothered me very much. If it had been Summer the clothing wouldn't have been as worrying but there was also the issue of the loose carseat. I managed to bite my tongue and not say anything.

As we were leaving in the car I noticed the mum at the bus stop outside Asda holding the carseat and I felt so angry. It was so very cold. AIBU not to understand why she didn't just dress her child properly??? She herself looked pretty well made up so I somehow doubt she's so desperate she can't afford a few onesies and a baby coat. I can't stop thinking about that poor baby.

Tbh I don’t understand the car seat thing- being strapped into a car seat is pretty much the safest place a baby can ever be, surely?

The blanket and no other clothes sounds strange though.

Jinglejanglefish · 09/05/2019 20:52

I don't really understand the car seat thing, how do you strap a car seat to the trolley? How is it dangerous in any way as long as the baby is strapped in to the actual car seat?

I would've assumed the baby had done an explosive shit and she didn't have any spare clothes.

Passthecherrycoke · 09/05/2019 20:53

That’s a good point jingle. Maybe she was in ASDA buying a change of clothes. Been there done that

PumpkinPie2016 · 09/05/2019 20:54

Maybe the baby was sick all over his/her clothes and she had forgotton to bring spares? It can happen.

Also, there may well be circumstances you don't know about regardless of how she may/may not have looked. She could well be in desperate circumstances Sad

I know it's easy to make assumptions but to me, it sounds like there was more to this than met the eye.

marniemoonie · 09/05/2019 20:55

There were trolleys that had special compartments to put a carseat on above the food. But the trolley she was using was just a typical cart and baby was in the corner.

I don’t understand the car seat being loose. Do you mean the straps were loose? If the baby is in a trolley rather than a car I can’t see it mattering too much that the straps are loose. It’s not great for young babies to be in car seats for longer than necessary though.

I’m guessing she was buying a change of clothes maybe?

Whereistheglove · 09/05/2019 20:56

Not really sure what you expect from this thread. Maybe she was having a day from hell and didn’t need someone looking down their nose at them. Maybes she’s already on ss radar ,maybe she needs to be. But you don’t sound very nice either, your post seems rather sneery than concerned.

BIWI · 09/05/2019 20:56

Why have you posted this twice?

BrainScience · 09/05/2019 20:56

Oh, sorry you mean the car seat itself wasn’t strapped in. Is that an issue? She’s not driving it at 30mph.

Treaclepie19 · 09/05/2019 20:57

The other side of the story I bet:

"I was out when my baby did a massive explosive poo. Soaked through her clothes and I had no spare clothes and very few nappies. Quickly stripped her off, put her in the car seat covered with the blanket I had and went to Asda. Asda had no trollies where you could sit the baby and since she was in her car seat anyway i just put her in the trolley and got some nappjes. While i was there, a very rude woman with two children was obviously judging me for baby being in just a blanket. WIBU?"

And yes, I used to put my son in his car seat in the trolley. I hated those germ ridden seats. He was my precious first born.

Passthecherrycoke · 09/05/2019 20:57

But it’s ok to just put the car seat in the trolley? Why do you think it isn’t?

marniemoonie · 09/05/2019 20:58

Ah shit. Posted twice. The app said post failed the first time

TopBitchoftheWitches · 09/05/2019 20:58

Oh stop bullshitting op. Complete bollocks.

Jinglejanglefish · 09/05/2019 20:58

Still not getting what's wrong with putting a car seat in the trolley?

PumpkinPie2016 · 09/05/2019 21:00

I once tried to use a trolley with a compartment above where you put the food and it was a bloody nightmare!

I'm not very tall and DS was very heavy and I was post c-section so I struggled massively to get the car seat on the platform thing. I don't blame her for using a normal trolley.

You sound really judgemental tbh!

Lena40 · 09/05/2019 21:01

As others have said, baby probably done a big poo that leaked, and the woman didn’t have any spare clothes, was prob in there buying something. It happens.

The car seat in the trolley is fine.

WingBingo · 09/05/2019 21:01

This really is no biggie

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 09/05/2019 21:02

You have no idea about the background of the child, you’ve made a snap shot judgement on a moment glance.

I was that parent...

Ds1 just had his 1st injections and unfortunately due to a family emergency I had to travel last minute.

Ds1 (2m at the time) had shat up his back and projectile vomited everywhere in the car, and had a very high temp!!

There was literally shit and sick everywhere.

I was 2 hours into a 4 hour drive and only packed nappies and baby wipes... I wasn’t going to take my poo and vomit covered child into Tesco while I bought him new clothes and calpol, nappy bags to put the shite and sick covered clothes in... I changed him out of his clothes and covered him with my jacket!!

People may have judged me!!! However you only seen a snap moment of the whole situation.

Didntwanttochangemyname · 09/05/2019 21:02

I'm dying to know what the problem with putting a car seat in a trolly is!

StickOfRhubarb · 09/05/2019 21:02

It’s fine to put your car seat in the trolley. I didn’t like my car seat so high up in the ‘right place’ as I’m short so my baby wouldn’t be able to see me.

Danni91 · 09/05/2019 21:02

What no pram but taking a bus?
Why would she carry a car seat on a bus?

Fyi, I have also put my baby car seat in the trolly. It doesnt leave much space though! But cant use a pram and a trolly at once.

mawof3soontobe · 09/05/2019 21:02

Have you ever used the trolley specifically for the car seat to be in? Unless you're over six feet you cannot see where you're going! Such a non issue. The baby has either had an accident or a temperature, I'd see the point in this post if she was in filling the trolley with wine and the baby was sat in the trolley full of alcohol and shitty clothes

SoyDora · 09/05/2019 21:03

I see absolutely no issue with putting the car seat in the trolley. It’s not going anywhere, is it? In fact I know DH did this with one of ours when he took the baby to the shop, forgot the pram wheels and it didn’t have trolleys suitable for a baby/car seat!
Being in a nappy and blanket is not ideal, no. I’d assume something had happened to the clothes (leaking nappy etc).

TopBitchoftheWitches · 09/05/2019 21:03

@mnhq

Or if they are not about

@nightwatch

Or @justineMN

Islandmum83 · 09/05/2019 21:03

Some very snipey responses OP. I think it's only natural to be concerned about an undressed baby in the cold. Unfortunately there was little you could do. Let's just hope it was a poo explosion and she was in there buying a change of clothes.
