To find this so very strange - baby in Asda?

Was in Asda today with DS1 (3) and DD2 (8) picking up some stuff for DC4 due in a few months. We were in the baby aisle and this mother came in with a baby (looked around 8 weeks) in a carseat in the trolley. The carseat wasn't strapped into the trolley, just in the cart. Even worse I had a quick glance down at baby and though it had a blanket on (looked very thin and seethrough) it was obvious the poor thing was in just a nappy underneath. It has been 5 degrees celcius in this area today and absolutley pissing it down. Mum saw me looking and gave me a bit of a rude look to which I responded "Your baby is lovely." and she just nodded and picked up some nappies before walking off. I see her again a few times throughout the shop and it bothered me very much. If it had been Summer the clothing wouldn't have been as worrying but there was also the issue of the loose carseat. I managed to bite my tongue and not say anything.

As we were leaving in the car I noticed the mum at the bus stop outside Asda holding the carseat and I felt so angry. It was so very cold. AIBU not to understand why she didn't just dress her child properly??? She herself looked pretty well made up so I somehow doubt she's so desperate she can't afford a few onesies and a baby coat. I can't stop thinking about that poor baby.

According to my mum, one time when I was a baby I unpoppered my babygrow and removed my nappy, in the shops. She was busy chasing my escapologist toddler brother and neglected to look back at the pram she was dragging for a couple of minutes, until someone pointed out her naked baby was licking a wee-stained nappy with every appearance of enjoyment.

I wouldn't judge, OP.

Whereistheglove · 09/05/2019 21:17

Why didn’t you offer her a lift home on your high horse. I’m sure the car seat would have strapped on

Amanduh · 09/05/2019 21:17

I and everyone I know put/s the carseat in the trolley...
The baby obviously had no clothes on for a reason!

DerelictWreck · 09/05/2019 21:18

I'm not a parent and even I know it's fine to put a car seat straight in a trolley Grin

DoomOnTheBroom · 09/05/2019 21:19

How has OP gotten to child number four without knowing that it's fine to put a car seat in the trolley and that babies can explosively shit all over their clothes?

GabsAlot · 09/05/2019 21:20

why was she using a bus with a car seat-maybe she had an argument with someone and got dumped with the baby-maybe it had a poonami

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 09/05/2019 21:20

This happened to me today, luckily I had two changes of clothes for DS in the nappy bag. He did a huge poo in the car, I was stuck in traffic and couldn't pull over straight away. Got to a tesco no easily locateable carseat trolleys so just put the car seat in one of the little trolleys. Took him to change him, clothes were a write off, cleaned him up, nappy bagged the dirty clothes at which point he rolled (very new to this) and did a huge pee all over the clean clothes I'd put on the changing unit to dress him in, so we're talking one jumper two pairs of socks, two vests, two pairs of leggings and two long sleeve bodysuits all dirty.

I didn't know what to do and knew his blanket was in the car I thought I was going to have to wrap him in a muslin and leg it to the car. It was raining heavily. Just through sheer luck there was a babygrow in the bottom of the bag that DH must have put there when he took him out at the weekend, so i put him in that, it was very creased and he had no vest underneath, I'm sure you would've judged me too.

Why didn’t you offer her a lift home on your high horse. 😂

Lilymossflower · 09/05/2019 21:23

I think the weirdest thing us that she went to the bus stop with her baby in the car seat ?
Not a pushchair ? Why bring your baby on the bus carried in an awkward and heavy car seat and not a buggy

DoomOnTheBroom · 09/05/2019 21:26

Someone could have been picking her up? DH has dropped me off at the supermarket before and rather than looking for a parking space he's gone off to get petrol or a carwash or other jobs while I've nipped around the shops then he's picked me up afterwards, usually the bus stop is the easiest place to drop off and pick up at.

BishopofBathandWells · 09/05/2019 21:29

I've put the car seat in a trolley. Quite heartening to see your judgemental post being called out, OP.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 09/05/2019 21:31

The weird bit is the bus stop, but could be any reason for that. I have zero baby experience but my first thought was poo or vomit tbh.

DoomOnTheBroom · 09/05/2019 21:32

I used to put DS in the bottom of the trolley when he was a toddler. It was guaranteed that if I didn't bring the buggy with me then he would fall asleep in the car on the way to the shops and I didn't have time to wait for him to finish his nap because he was a champion napper and would sleep for 2+ hours. I used to put his blanket in the bottom of the trolley to pad it out and then lie him down on it, push him around the shop fast asleep with the shopping carefully placed around him, and then load him back into the car still asleep Grin

Northernlurker · 09/05/2019 21:33

Mind your own business op. You don't know what was happening here.

floraloctopus · 09/05/2019 21:35

OP, you are being this judgemental because.... ?

YABU.

Survivingchipandkippee · 09/05/2019 21:35

Is it any wonder mums are hard on themselves with such judgemental people around? Until you walks a day in someone’s shoes you shouldn’t judge op

BikeRunSki · 09/05/2019 21:36

OP, you are a marvellous mother and full of compassion for your fellow mothers.

I don't see the issue of the car seat, I put mine in the trolley. So long as she wasn't throwing the tins in there on top of the baby, it's surely quite safe in the trolley.

Just a nappy and thin blanket, yep I'd find that concerning. It's been about 10° here today and that's too cold for a baby with no clothing on and if your Asda is like mine it's always really cold. I was cold in a t shirt and cardigan in Asda the other day.
It could of course be soiled clothes, but if it were my baby I'd have put my coat/jumper or something over him as well as the blanket. Was she buying clothes Op or just nappies?
Personally I'd have asked her if everything was ok, but that's probably the social worker in me.
