I agree with NoSauce though that the circus excuse came afterwards.

RosaWaiting · 09/05/2019 10:27

This is shockingly ignorant. I can't believe anyone can be blind to the racist connotations of this image.

contradiction in terms surely? It's ignorance. He knew exactly what he was doing.

Jedeye · 09/05/2019 10:28

Disgusting, he should go.

NoSquirrels · 09/05/2019 10:28

And that is a terrifically offensive image regardless.

RosaWaiting · 09/05/2019 10:28

*it's NOT ignorance

sorry, getting too angry here!

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 09/05/2019 10:28

Exactly what MirandaGoshawk said - even if you buy the whole "I didn't see the race connotations" BS, then that last phrase of "guessing it was my turn in the barrel" is the biggest sorry, not sorry and not taking any responsibility for it himself.

The80sweregreat · 09/05/2019 10:29

He obviously reads and is on twitter as he posted it on there!

He also must be very aware of the racism in football, which sadly still exists and has been in the news recently as well. I know this and i know nothing about football at all , or even follow it! I do however watch the news and listen to the radio.
He knows this kind of thing isn't acceptable - i will not believe that he wasnt aware it might cause offence. Its mind blowing in this day and age that anyone can defend him really and i usually do see the other ' point of view' on lots of things generally. I really cant with this.

peachgreen · 09/05/2019 10:29

Knowing Baker's general politics, I believe him that he genuinely didn't think of the racist connotation but regardless, it's unarguably present which he would have realised as soon as it was pointed out and his apology wasn't good enough. Really I think he ought to offer to resign. At the very least he needs to be suspended while the BBC carry out an investigation, as would happen in any other workplace (one would hope).

areyoubeingserviced · 09/05/2019 10:30

Agree Portia- I have been shocked by some of the frankly racist comments about Meghan on MN .
This is the happiest that I have ever seen Harry. He’s obviously been searching for the right woman for him and he was blessed when he met Meghan
I wish people would just leave them alone and let them enjoy their gorgeous baby

FaithFrank · 09/05/2019 10:31

I don't think about a person's racial heritage often. To me, people are people.

This is a demonstration of white privilege. Black and mixed-race people often have to think about race when they are on the receiving end of racism. You (and Danny) are in the fortunate position of not having experienced that.

StCharlotte · 09/05/2019 10:31

However his bosses should make him present some of his programme about it. Get people to call in and discuss it, make something positive out of it.

I'm guessing you've never heard his programme. That is never going to happen. Humble pie does not exist on Danny Baker's life-menu (although sausage sandwiches obviously do).

Shame, I've enjoyed listening to him for decades and he's sailed close to the wind many times but this is a step too far. I would have no issue if it had been a Cambridge child, but he knew exactly what he was doing here and to feign innocence just compounds it. Sorry Danny, time's up.

peachgreen · 09/05/2019 10:32

Also as a Millwall fan he should be more aware than anyone of the insidious nature of racism. I really can't see a way he can do anything other than resign.

peachgreen · 09/05/2019 10:33

@msjuniper Agreed.

idoliketobebesidethesea · 09/05/2019 10:34

He's been fired

The80sweregreat · 09/05/2019 10:34

IF he was referring to circus's and the 'media circus' over this new baby, why did he not put anything on his media feed when the other royal babies were brought out for a photo?

There was much more publicity over Prince George as he is the new heir to the throne and there were people parked outside the hospital for weeks and weeks before he was born and twitter and facebook were around then too.

Losingthechubrub · 09/05/2019 10:34

He's just been fired

StealthPolarBear · 09/05/2019 10:35

He's fired

RedDogsBeg · 09/05/2019 10:35

He’s a Millwall fan. No one who has attended matches there (or pretty much any football match with black players) can be unaware of the link between chimp noises and racism. To pretend an intelligent and media savvy man like him wasn’t aware of the implications of this photo is insulting.

Agree 100% with you whyohwhy, his excuses are pathetic he knew exactly what he was doing.

areyoubeingserviced · 09/05/2019 10:36

I am glad that he has been fired

RosaWaiting · 09/05/2019 10:36

I don't think about a person's racial heritage often. To me, people are people

same here, it's the racism directed at me that gets me thinking about it.

yay if he's really been fired!

The80sweregreat · 09/05/2019 10:37

Oh well, good. Lets hope he can focus his mind on learning how the world has moved on since the 1900's. Or do some reading up on it at least.

NoSauce · 09/05/2019 10:37

Firing him is the right decision.

Langrish · 09/05/2019 10:38

Moron.

PortiaCastis · 09/05/2019 10:38

Doria Ragland and her Daughter must have a really good impression of the British public as Meghan bashing is a favourite pastime but hey Baker has just been fired
Good !

findingmyfeet12 · 09/05/2019 10:38

It was only right that he was fired.
