Oh that's foul

StealthPolarBear · 09/05/2019 10:16

Paddling I've been thinking the same. Hopefully they know this is all him and nothing to do with the innocent baby.
I keep going round this in my head thinking there must be another explanation. Cute kitten type photo. But no...

whyohwhyowhydididoit · 09/05/2019 10:16

He’s a Millwall fan. No one who has attended matches there (or pretty much any football match with black players) can be unaware of the link between chimp noises and racism. To pretend an intelligent and media savvy man like him wasn’t aware of the implications of this photo is insulting.

As I said upthread I’ve been a massive DB fan for years but I think it’s time for him to go.

Tanith · 09/05/2019 10:16

I've never considered Meghan's racial heritage, either. I know, from the occasional media articles and MN posts that I've read, that she is mixed race, but it's not something that I would have seen for myself and I've never understood why it was ever something to draw attention to.

All I see when I see Meghan is a beautiful, but rather self-conscious young lady who seems anxious not to put a foot wrong.

Therefore, I picked up the "circus performer" aspect of Danny Baker's "joke", not the racism connections that can be made. I don't think he intended to be racist, though he's right to apologise for offence caused.

I wonder what the Mountbatten-Windsors thought of it.

NoSauce · 09/05/2019 10:17

I agree paddling. I thought of M and H hearing about this as soon as I saw it. Really, really awful.

IceRebel · 09/05/2019 10:17

Can you imagine having a beautiful new baby and having this kind of ignorant shit blow up?

Not to mention

The rumours about using a surrogate
Questions about Harry being the father
The baby being born 2 weeks ago
and so many people slating the name.

Sad
ItsAllGone19 · 09/05/2019 10:18

I often think that media hysteria to "celebrity is offensive" is ridiculous...but even I was gobsmacked he honestly thought that was a remotely suitable image to post.

He absolutely deserves every bit of vitriol heading his way.

ConferencePear · 09/05/2019 10:19

If he didn't realise that this photograph was offensively racist under the circumstances then he should have done. Perhaps another job where his limited understanding matters less is in order.

CaptainJaneway62 · 09/05/2019 10:19

That tweet was disgusting and so is Danny Baker
He knew exactly what he was doing and it's not the first time he's been sacked by the BBC
He always been an arrogant, abusive moron...the link to the article below is from 1997 which gives you a pretty good idea of the measure of the man.

StealthPolarBear · 09/05/2019 10:19

Apart from that we all love them and bear them no ill will, right.
Ffs people what is going on in the world at the moment? Hopefully M is still in the new baby bubble and this isn't getting through. I bet her mum feels welcomed :(

MirandaGoshawk · 09/05/2019 10:20

Yes, he said "Also, guessing it was my turn in the barrel" meaning he didn't really do anything wrong

This. He did something which he thought would be funny, and when it blew up in his face his 'apology' suggested that it's through no fault of his. I do think he is witty and intelligent and I've always liked him. Not any more. Obnoxious man. (I didn't see him on the Jungle prog.)

shushymcshush · 09/05/2019 10:20

I don't buy his excuse. Even if he was having a dig at the "circus" nature of it all (media circus, royal baby nonsense for a minor royal etc), everyone knows ape & monkey connotations & how it would be interpreted and would therefore steer clear.

Surely he remembers the 80s football (racist monkey chants, throwing bananas etc) and should therefore know that this is not ok?

StealthPolarBear · 09/05/2019 10:20

Good point ConferencePear. The poor dear maybe needs an easier job.

StealthPolarBear · 09/05/2019 10:21

I grew up in a (white) bubble and was told about the monkey references by a mixed race friend at school in our teens. Even I would have no excuse as an adult.

Nonnymum · 09/05/2019 10:22

I and most of my friends are in Danny Bakers age group and none of us would dream of tweeting such an obviously racist photo. Of course he was aware of the connotations how could he not be? Age is no excuse.

AguerosAngel · 09/05/2019 10:22

Danny Baker is a prize cunt.

That’s horrible.

Dermymc · 09/05/2019 10:23

It took me a few looks at the picture to work out why it was "racist". I don't think about a person's racial heritage often. To me, people are people. Is it possible that Danny was commenting on the media circus surrounding the baby, and not referring to the baby as a monkey?

nancy75 · 09/05/2019 10:24

Of course he knows what the monkey/racist references are, the point I was making earlier is that if you don't know/remember that Meghan is mixed race those references don't apply

PortiaCastis · 09/05/2019 10:25

The man's a low kerb licking racist but a lot of comments regarding Meghan on Mn have been pretty low and just as disgusting

RedBerryTea · 09/05/2019 10:26

I clicked on the link assuming I would think people were making a fuss over nothing (as is the current fashion), but good grief that's appalling! Shame as I like Danny Baker's Saturday morning show, but he can't survive this surely?

NoSauce · 09/05/2019 10:26

I didn’t associate the monkey dressed up in a suit with the circus. I think he quickly came up with this excuse after his racist joke backfired.

MsJuniper · 09/05/2019 10:26

The subsequent tweets made it even worse. If he had said, "I'm so sorry I didn't make the connection but I can see it now and people are absolutely right to pull me up on it, I apologise unreservedly and will spend some time reflecting", that would have been a start, rather than nonsense about diseased minds and being his turn in the barrel, ie you're all racist for even questioning me and anyone who calls out a well known person is a troll/pc gorn mad.

NoSquirrels · 09/05/2019 10:26

Wow. Half caught this on the news but not who the person was.

It was Danny Baker! Fucking hell.

No way he’d not know this was racist as fuck. No way at all.

He very much deserves to go.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 09/05/2019 10:26

I've always quite liked Danny Baker and I must said I'm really disappointed in him. This is shockingly ignorant. I can't believe anyone can be blind to the racist connotations of this image.

KingHenrysCodpiece · 09/05/2019 10:26

He then also said that it was his ‘turn’ to face the barrage, which I took to mean the PC lobby attacking those in the public eye

That's actually very revealing. At some point he's succumbed to the idea that every outcry against racism by someone in the public eye is entirely down to some sort of SJW oversensitivity. And look! I gain points cause its my turn!!
Ok thenHmm
