I do think you are lying, I am just saying I can't see a visual connection between meghan markle and a chimp so it would never have occurred to me. I was surprised to learn that mm was mixed race I didn't realise until I saw her mother. I don't think she has the stereotypical features of a black face or looks any darker than a Caucasian with a sun tan.
I live in an area which is virtually 100 percent white and don't come across black people much and when I do they are not treated any different. So maybe that's why I don't see any racism
I do know the Royal family through the ages have been inbred and suffered madness and weak intellect and would have assumed thus was the joke

Hearhere · 10/05/2019 12:10

I now think it was all a publicity stunt to get Danny baker back in the news
He smells the zeitgeist, Trump is in the White House, authoritarian leaders are on the rise, racism misogyny and bigotry are the order of the day
he is tweeting to his base, it's a dog whistle to the British chapter of the KKK

Mumberjack · 10/05/2019 12:11

I think Dara’s take on it would have had credibility had DB not gone quickly from a ‘sorry’ to a ‘sorry, but’ then to playing the victim with the whole fish in a barrel thing.

DB talks a lot of shite at the best of times, this time he should have apologised then shut the fuck up.

Dana28 · 10/05/2019 12:11

Do not think you are lying

JacquesHammer · 10/05/2019 12:12

And that is white privilege. Ask the few people of colour you come across whether they’re treated differently.

Could there be another radio station that would welcome controversy like that and that has already offered him better pay than he received at the BBC?

twilightcafe · 10/05/2019 12:17

JacquesHammer
My thoughts exactly.

NoSauce · 10/05/2019 12:18

Living in an area where only white people live doesn’t make you blind to the hatred and repulsive views that are world wide towards black people though. It’s often reported on tv/SM and in the newspapers. I do not buy this notion of yours that because you apparently haven’t witnessed racism it must not be true. Jeez.

Mrsjayy · 10/05/2019 12:19

Dana you also said Meghan markle didn't look black to you do you not realise how offensive that is ?

OhFFSMary · 10/05/2019 12:20

Well the apology he has made (finally) is actually a good one I think. It’s a shame he didn’t make it immediately afterwards.

Hopefully the (deserved) vitriol towards him will have made a tiny weeny step on the path towards blanket intolerance of racism. That’s the only good I can see coming out of this whole situation.

MrsBethel · 10/05/2019 12:20

Dara O'Briain got it spot on.

What's more likely?
A) A closet racist picks that moment to vent his hatred at a baby, not realising this will end his career and so then backtracks and issues a self serving apology.
B) It wasn't meant that way, and he thought 'Oh Fuck' when the racist angle was pointed out.

You can tell by his slightly desperate immediate response that he was appalled by that interpretation.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 10/05/2019 12:21

Dear God, I’ve just heard someone on Radio 2 claim that people’s reaction to this is ‘intolerance’. Beyond satire.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 10/05/2019 12:22

I'm not allergic to peanuts. Would it be appropriate for me to tell someone else that they couldn't be allergic to peanuts if I'm not?

ThatCurlyGirl · 10/05/2019 12:22

I'm in PR. I would bet my life that a PR wrote today's apology.

JacquesHammer · 10/05/2019 12:25

You can tell by his slightly desperate immediate response that he was appalled by that interpretation

Is that why he lied and joked about it?

Surely if he was, indeed, appalled he would have issued a sincere sounding apology. Rather than suggesting it was anyone’s fault but his?

Mrsjayy · 10/05/2019 12:26

I really should stop calling Meghan. Meghan Markle Blush I do it all the time and It is bloody irritating

Dana28 · 10/05/2019 12:27

Yes I confess I did nt know about the black people primate connection being a big thing.i don't really get it
My immediate thought was the stereotypical aristocratic thicko angle. My interpretation is based on my experience, the same as your interpretation is based on yours. No one is more correct than the other

ThatCurlyGirl · 10/05/2019 12:27

@Judashascomeintosomemoney

Listening too and I wish someone would explain that a large part of the reason the monkey comparisons throughout history hurt so much is because they are a way of saying people of colour are less than human.

Less. Than. Human.

Anyone who hasn't experienced racism first hand - take a second and imagine how that feels. At least acknowledge that it is reality for people of colour.

Despicable behaviour.

RubberTreePlant · 10/05/2019 12:28

I think it's just more modern @Mrsjayy - we don't have that attitude now that women transmogrify on marriage. She's still entitled to her own name as well as her DH's.

OhFFSMary · 10/05/2019 12:28

MrsJayy - I’m not disagreeing with you but please can you explain why that is so offensive, I genuinely want to understand.

I have a friend whose father is Indian and mother is ‘white’. She has dark hair but very fair skin and dispassionately I would probably say that she doesn’t look Indian. I would never mean to cause offence by saying that and to be clear, I wouldn’t say that to her but I can genuinely say that for the first year I knew her I had no idea her father was Indian.

StealthPolarBear · 10/05/2019 12:29

Dana read that last post and tell me you're still as right as everyone else

StealthPolarBear · 10/05/2019 12:30

StealthPolarBear · 10/05/2019 12:30

Argh from that curly girl

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 10/05/2019 12:30

Of course they did. He should have got someone to do it last night.

ShatnersWig · 10/05/2019 12:31

@ChicCroissant Although Gina Yashere did say this "You need to acknowledge that never in history has anyone insulted a royal baby. They've always been off limits" which is demonstrably untrue.

When she was repeatedly challenged on it, she changed it to "Ok talking about insults THE FUCKING DAY THE BABY IS BORN. Why do white people play so dumb when it comes to seeing racism?"

Which in itself isn't the best response either.
