@nancy75
So you’ve missed the acres of coverage on the bbc and the broadsheets.

gamerwidow · 09/05/2019 11:28

P.s. if you can’t condemn people you like for actions you’d have no hesitation in condemning if made by people you don’t like then you’ve got a problem.

Pegsinarow · 09/05/2019 11:28

I wonder if small children today would even know about the old bananas on football pitch connotations

Very sadly they do.

KingHenrysCodpiece · 09/05/2019 11:28

James O'Brien mounting a defense on LBC.

yolo "I just dont understand why he would do it, unless underneath the having a larf stuff he is a bitter and twisted racist."

this. like so many people. I don't understand people not understanding tbh. Lots of people are hiding racism, misogyny etc and then it emerges and they try to plead "error".

OP - no fan of James OB but seriously!!! Argh.

FoxSquadKitten · 09/05/2019 11:30

I remember this feeling. My MIL liked to speculate about what colour my baby would be when pregnant with my first. It's so fucking degrading and othering.

But I can't see anything wrong with that, it's natural to wonder what an unborn baby will look like, isn't it? What colour eyes it will have, it's hair colour etc and yes, skin tone. Genetics is amazing/interesting, no?

Anyway, glad DB has been sacked.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/05/2019 11:30

James defending him, really? (damn im at work and cant listen)

RedDogsBeg · 09/05/2019 11:30

In DB's 'apology' tweets he stated he would use the same image for any Royal births, what a load of bollocks. There have been several Royal births and this is the first time he has used that image, stop trying to gloss over and justify your racism Danny you knew damn well what that image represented.

Nanamilly · 09/05/2019 11:30

Veryangry- I think that Meghan actually looked quite tearful to be honest.

I thought so too. But to giver her her due she soon rallied. I think she sounds lovely when speaking.

Knackeredmommy · 09/05/2019 11:33

I was very surprised, but he's not stupid and knows full well that posting that picture is totally unacceptable and hugely offensive.

He is of an age where people were called horrible names because of their skin colour. I don't understand why people are struggling to see the obvious. I'm younger than him and got called a monkey & a wog and worse!

So wrong, yes he should be sacked.

Thymeout · 09/05/2019 11:33

James O'Brien is talking about it now on LBC. Apparently, DB has a collection of photos of chimps dressed up as people. I can believe this. He's a magpie for arcane memorabilia. He occasionally tweets famous people like Bowie photoshopped as chimps. He's got a thing about Bowie - 'the Dame'.

He's of the PG Tips ad generation, when we didn't think chimps dressed as removal men trying to get a piano down the stairs were mocking black people, or exploiting animals. You could pay to watch a chimpanzee tea party at London zoo. I've never heard him say anything remotely racist.

He has always been very dismissive of political correctness. I think he switches off when the subject comes up. So it wouldn't have been the first thing he thought of when he chose that photo.

But the tone of his excuses is unforgivable. Any decent person would have been mortified when the racist aspects of his tweet in this context had been pointed out to them.

Nanamilly · 09/05/2019 11:36

. It's so fucking degrading and othering

My very large immediate family is made of many different nationalities and there’s absolutely nothing degrading or othering about us sitting as a family, wondering about a new baby we’re all waiting for.

RosaWaiting · 09/05/2019 11:37

if Baker has a collection of this, it makes the "ignorant" thing even less likely - though it was vanishingly unlikely in the first place.

areyoubeingserviced · 09/05/2019 11:37

Thymeout- His apology annoyed me

findingmyfeet12 · 09/05/2019 11:37

I don't believe for a minute that DB was being deliberately racist - it's too awful an image for anyone in his position to post deliberately. I don't think he'd risk a lucrative and successful media career even if he was a racist, he'd hide it better.

It's the nature of his apology that I find the most telling - dismissive and minimising the effect of the image.

He deserved to go.

pigsDOfly · 09/05/2019 11:39

Not surprised, the man's a yob. Always has been.

greenlloon · 09/05/2019 11:39

can people stop saying hes intelligent hes an idiot

Ghanagirl · 09/05/2019 11:40

@Dermymc

It took me a few looks at the picture to work out why it was "racist". I don't think about a person's racial heritage often.
People who say this are usually white and disingenuous

RedDogsBeg · 09/05/2019 11:41

thighofrelief101 I wonder if small children today would even know about the old bananas on the football pitch connotations.

It's not old it is still happening along with monkey noises and actions in parts of Europe. Racism is an ongoing issue in UK football, look at what Raheem Sterling had to put up with at the Chelsea v Man City match in December last year.

enjoyingscience · 09/05/2019 11:41

Glad they sacked him. It’s a disgusting image, and no one who hasn’t been living under a rock for the last decade would fail to understand the connotations. What a pig.

Cobblersandhogwash · 09/05/2019 11:41

He had to be sacked for this.

Although apparently, he has a fascination for simians dressed up as people.

Dermymc · 09/05/2019 11:41

@ghanagirl wrong

Kedgeree · 09/05/2019 11:43

I don't believe for a minute that DB was being deliberately racist - it's too awful an image for anyone in his position to post deliberately. I don't think he'd risk a lucrative and successful media career even if he was a racist, he'd hide it better.
Unfortunately, IME people who are racist are a)utterly shameless about it b) think that most people agree with them and c) think it doesn't really matter. I'm sure he did it thoughtlessly, because it's nothing to him and he probably thinks his sacking is a shocking over-reaction. Folks like him just don't get it, and never will. He's no loss.
