Not convinced...
Will he be Prince Archie?!

I think it’s nice that Mountbatten is making a comeback, William and Harry were just ‘Windsor’.

Not true. All the Queen’s children and male line grandchildren have the surname Mountbatten-Windsor - it’s just that they usually use titles rather than surnames (so William and family are known as the Cambridges rather than by the name Mountbatten-Windsor).

StillCoughingandLaughing · 09/05/2019 16:40

I read that Louis Mountbatten was born a prince. Why isn't prince part of his title in later years?

A Prince of Batternberg, not Great Britain. That Royal family no longer exists, so neither does the title. He was known as Earl Mountbatten because that was his title as a member of the British Royal Family.

Who. Gives. A. Fuck.

As pp said, many of them are Mountbatten-Windsor but they use their titles if they have them. I suppose it makes more sense to the public who know them as "of something" and keeps them distinct. William was "William Wales" at school and in the military, derived from Charles being PoW. He'd be William Cambridge in his own right now. Am I right in thinking that Louis will likely eventually be the next Duke of York, too? Mountbatten Windsor is also only for descendents of Queen & Philip, too. Note Prince Michaels DC & the Gloucester DC who aren't "of" anything are just Windsor- since they're nothing to do with Philip, who brings the "Mountbatten" bit.

Wrt to Louis Mountbatten, I think his branch lost their titles when they swapped from being Battenbergs to Mountbattens. A lot of lesser styles were dispensed with, I think. He was also only a serene highness and the product of a morganatic marriage, so not v important in that regard. He picked up other titles though, so he ended up fine!

Presumably the posters on this thread?

Traditionally he would get the title on marriage, yes. However, if Andrew is still alive (or not long dead) he will probably get another extant title.

NameChangeSameRage · 09/05/2019 17:08

I'm not keen. To me its a dogs name and I think using a diminutive as a given name is tacky as anything

Katie, Sally, Tom, Jack, Harry, Charlie- all diminutives and all perfectly acceptable names.

TurquoiseDress · 09/05/2019 17:16

I love the name Archie!

And I like it combined with Harrison

As long as the parents love it that's all that matters!

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 09/05/2019 17:20

@StillCoughing, given that Andrew will likely hit his 90s, Louis will probably get another title! Could he just stay Cambridge or would that screw the system?

Just realised that the York title has passed v conveniently due to George V vacating it to become king after his older brother died and George VI vacating it after the abdication of his brother Edward VII, so Andy had a pretty clear run at it! There hadn't been one for a while before then, I think? King James II appears to have been the last one. Victoria's second son was Edinburgh and she gave Albany- which traditionally goes with it- to her youngest son Prince Leopold.

crosstalk · 09/05/2019 17:47

There were two presidents in the US called Harrison. The last one despite being Republican made efforts to establish a Forestry Commission and worked unsuccessfully for black rights. I suspect there may be more we'll hear about from UK and US researchers.

Actually thinking about it, Louis would only be Duke of York is Charles is dead, as the tire is traditionally given to the monarch’s second son. I would imagine on the Queen’s death that William will become Prince of Wales and George will be Duke of Cambridge.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 09/05/2019 18:07

That makes sense. Then eventually George would be the Prince of Wales, so Louis would get a vacant title or possibly be York.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 09/05/2019 18:33

The names they have chosen reflect the fact that they aren't naming for posterity, entirely appropriate given their place in the royal family which is peripheral and likely to become more so as William's family grows.

They are the sort of names which are as likely to turn up on a housing estate as a country one. They've made sure that their son will be able to blend in wherever he lands, at least with his name. So, although not to my taste, I think they've chosen wisely.
